Well today was their opening day. A welcome addition to the Downtown BK area with all the new developments that have popped up in the past few months. It will be the go-to place as more condos open up. As I walked in, the place really reminded me of Garden of Eden on Montague -- a gourmet labyrinthine supermarket. The aroma as you walk in is amazing -- rotisserie chicken! I did a quick perusal and they have a decent cheese selection and a great butcher area. And of course, you could hear some classical music in the background. But like Garden of Eden, I was kinda annoyed with the prices. I mean, it's more expensive than nearby Trader Joes. -- like $7 something bucks for a large bag of Terra Chips? Really???? So maybe not quite the place for the public defenders working nearby. har har har. What I was really excited about though was the coffee bar. Nice seating that faces onto Schermerhorn -- and they serve Intelligentsia coffee! I had a double espresso, which was good. Apparently the Intelligentsia coffee though is only for their drip coffee, not their espressos and lattes. Oh well. I also had a nice fluffy croissant that looked just about perfect -- they had a good variety of other baked goods. So, for the crowd who live in Downtown BK on their way to work, definitely a good spot to pop by for a great cup of coffee and a croissant. And I hear they have a good hot bar -- it wasn't lunchtime when I went but I'll stop by again later. When I stopped by, they were still scrambling to put stuff on shelves. But as of yet, the place has a lot of potential. From some press interviews, it looks like they're gonna offer classes, a restaurant, etc. read more

This place is a little expensive, but the selection is unbeatable and the produce is always very fresh. The cheese and meat variety is endless- I think they have at least 8 different aged goudas. I typically just stop here for specialty items of that nature when I happen to be in the area. Employees are also very helpful and polite! read more

I have to admit this place surprised me. Let me just give you a tiny background story. I arrived nearby with bags of stuff for Goodwill. Then I ventured out, curious for lunch. There are loads of nearby places offering fast food, be it pizza, burgers, Chinese, etc. Most of these places looked pretty drab, so I thought a grocer might offer a sandwich or something. I wasn't expecting this store to be (a) so big and (b) full of gourmet options. The deli had loads of sides and entrees. There's a salad bar. There are hot foods ready to go such as rotisserie chicken or cooked portions of salmon. Plus they've got aisles full of normal items, and a checkout aisle lines with gourmet chocolate bars (sneaky bastards). If I lived near this would probably be my go-to grocer and also place to grab a healthy meal (sorry area greasy spoons). read more

I like Brooklyn Fare, I like having it in the neighborhood. I usually prefer to go here over anywhere else, but that doesn't mean it's not without faults. For example: -The produce is not always as fresh as it should be, and it's pretty expensive. -The new expansion has caused some confusion. Finding things can be tough. Olive oil? In the fancy oil aisle near the fish counter. Canola oil? By the beer. -They don't carry flowers. But, they *DO* carry Lone Star, like El B. also mentioned. And they have a good variety of stuff. This place is huge, especially for this busy part of Brooklyn. I had never seen this store. Currently on jury duty and didn't bring enough for lunch. I did not want to spend alot of moeny on hot food as I just needed soemthing small. After walking around the area I found this huge -ss supermarket. It looks more like a Whole Foods than a regulation supermarkey based on size and the variety of stuff they carry I just picked up a bag of friend plantain chips and some beer (for later). They pretty much have everything you can imagine and then some here at this market. The isles are laid out in a weird configuration, but I guess that's due to the space constraints. I don't shop here often since it is far from Park Slope, but I like to come over to see the variety and the excellent quality of goods they have. Especially for a hard to find ingredient. This is a little treasure found in dirty Brooklyn. It's a tightly squeezed in all around grocery with lots of prepared foods and unique eclectic food choices. I always find some lovely cheeses and meats. Great beer choices. Now the down side service is far less than friendly, which is sad being it has a locals market feel. The. I like this grocery store a lot. It's not the closest one to my apartment building but I venture here because of the quality. They have a really nice seafood selection (I'm only pointing this out because I feel like it's hard to come by at your neighborhood grocery store) and the prices overall are very reasonable. I'm still always cautious to check the date on dairy and meat items. They also carry Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream which is an Ohio thing. Thumbs up. The layout is a little weird, or maybe it's just me, but I always find myself having to backtrack through the store for something before I leave. Clean, well laid out little grocery store that's a bit pricey on standard items. The produce looks great and the prepared foods are delicious. I like to stop in, pick something up from the deli and eat at the counters facing out the sunny windows. For serious food shopping, however, it's worth it to walk the 7 minutes to Trader Joe's on Court St. read more

Brooklyn Fare is a block away from work so it's always there when I need it... but it is on the pricey side so I will only go if I know what I'm looking for. They have a decent artisan cheese section, which I rummaged through this past friday looking for ingredients for a fondue. I couldn't, for the life of me, find the gruyère, and I asked the guy working in the deli section (with the diamond in his tooth) and he came out to help me with no success. Then he asked another guy, who also could not help me, and then finally, the real cheese guy, I could tell by his french accent, came to point it out to me. In my defense, the gruyère sign was tiny and the type of gruyère was in big letters, so that's a little confusing. It was still nice that half the store came out to help me. They sell kamboucha here, which is a big plus for me because it's not the easiest drink to find. Essentially, they have quite a few little gems in the store, and as others have mentioned, they may not carry something that a regular market would, but I would say this is specialty market that you shouldn't really do all your shopping at, but come to get that jam, sausage or beverage that you wouldn't really find elsewhere. I would almost say it's a neighborhood whole foods, but I can't decide whether that's a compliment or an insult. read more

Being the closest supermarket to me, I end up at Brooklyn Fare almost every other day. They have a decent, and consistently fresh salad bar (the only downside being the price). However, it is discounted after 7:30pm which is a plus. The employees are also very helpful when it comes to product requests. I had requested the pumpkin flavor of Arctic Zero ice cream, and they informed me that several other people had come in with the same request, however they were unable to order it as their distributer did not have this flavor. To my surprise, I found that they had stocked up on that flavor two weeks later. read more

This was a really cool little city Market. We really wanted to eat at the Chef's table, which is at the Brooklyn Fare, but I am too poor. They had an incredible selection of ice cream! This is my go to grocery store. The food is fresh, there's a great selection, and everyone who works there is super nice. Their prepared vegetables get me through the week. Love the string beans with shallots/pistachios and the asparagus in lemon oil. I've bought rib eyes and lamb chops from the butcher and they've been great. There is an international candy selection that my friends from the UK loved when visiting me. read more

If I lived a tiny bit closer this would be my go to grocery store. The selection is great- with a wide variety of organic health food, gourmet oddities as well as your basic Cheerios; it's similar to Whole Foods offerings, but often better. The selection can actually be a little overwhelming! The deli is delicious, and I give them props for carrying many of my favorite treats: McVities Chocolate Biscuits, Jeni's Ice Cream and the awesome local "Dough" donuts. Service is super friendly, and the lines move swiftly. There is a small area besides the cash registers to sit and eat. read more

Brooklyn Fare is an incredibly well-run grocery store-- I can only assume they have really exceptional management behind the scenes. Staff are friendly (and seem happy working there) and food is always well stocked and perfectly organized. They have a great selection of just about everything including meats, seafood and delicious gourmet cheeses (the goat cheese is to die for). The produce is always fresh, and tend to last longer than equivalent items at both the Trader Joes and Key Foods nearby. I'm really thankful to have this store in my neighborhood. read more

Made my first visit today, and was very pleased. I plan to stop here whenever I need groceries and need to change from the G to the C. I was impressed with the produce selection, especially the large variety of mushrooms and citrus. The honeycrisps I bought were not amazing, but I'll let BF down easy since I know they aren't really in season right now. I appreciated the option. The house-made berry smoothie was delicious and very reasonably priced ($2.99), and if I weren't trying to watch my weight, I would have immediately grabbed one of the bakery's raspberry bars. My only complaint is that they don't carry paper towels and toilet paper--or if they do, I couldn't find it. Even my eensy little local market in St. Louis, which is maybe 1/5 the size of BF, carried a few rolls of eco-friendly paper products. My bum was totally bummed. read more

Congrats to the people who designed the layout here. They really have the "Labyrinth of Shopping That Overwhelms and Terrifies Customers Into Spending More Time--And Money--Than They Intended" thing down pat. I come here 3-4 times a week, and I still end up being rat-mazed into buying at least one thing I didn't come there looking for. I'm trying to train myself like a dog to go in, retrieve the one thing I needed, and get out as fast as possible, but it's going to take some work to reverse engineer the thousands of dollars they must have spent on hiring a psychologist who specializes in store layout. Anyway. Their prepared foods are unparalleled! I can't say enough about them. I literally will not eat this kind of "deli" food anywhere else. I have to amend my rating of Brooklyn Fare by one star, since my last review. My grievances are the same -- the place is way overpriced, it's horribly confusing in terms of organization of products, and the service can be spotty at times -- but it's absurdly convenient (which I understand should not factor into a more objective review), and it offers well selected options of beer, cheese, tea, herbs and spices, etc. It's not a place to shop for basics. Go to TJ's, in that instance. It's possible to build a great rapport with some of the staffers, as a regular, while other staffers could use some basic customer-service orientation. I'm still not sure about produce, however. There's a great, and necessary, selection of organic produce (again, way overpriced), but the produce in general is constantly being picked-over by staffers. So I don't know if what I'm getting is genuinely fresh, or if it's been reduced to "looking as fresh" after some sort of maintenance effort. A necessarily convenient place to shop, but I'm ambivalent. read more

I've been coming here for years since it opened. Recently I have stopped buying pork. I have had a bad experience buying pork chops and ground pork/beef. The pork smells very funky and tastes rancid. This happened for the second time yesterday. I love Brooklyn Fare because they have amazing people. Omar, one of the managers is the nicest person you will ever meet. I frequent BK Fare because I live very close. They pretty much cater to well off clientele only, as their prices are sky high. They absolutely have the best breakfast and their prepared food is pretty good too. I just wish their prepared food was organic. After all, they ARE charging organic prices. Their prices & policies are inconsistent, which is annoying. I guess I only notice because I frequent the store -- sometimes multiple times daily. Their meat and fish is very good! I don't mind splurging in that department here. They are also very good about allowing you to return a product if necessary. read more

I've regularly shopped at grocery stores in Downtown Brooklyn, Fort Greene, and Bed Stuy and this place is by far the best and my favorite. I've never seen a better selection of foods from healthy options to guilty pleasures, and they're very reasonably priced. I'm stoked that I can find little things that I can't find in other grocery stores - like roasted unsalted cashews at their nut station (Whole Foods in the city doesn't even have this). Their huge ice cream and chocolate selection near the registers are also something to note. They had some pretty good items on sale if you pay attention to the flyers around the store, and they have a good rewards program where they give you some money back once you hit a certain point level. Don't see that much around here, so I definitely appreciate that. read more

The chef table at Brooklyn Fare is an incredible dining experience. Mostly shellfish and seafood. Japanese ingredients. European preparations. At least twenty courses. Except for the last few, most are single bites. If you are into greasy burgers or oversized steaks, you will not like Brooklyn Fare. If however, you want to enjoy exquisite ingredients impeccably prepared, you will be rewarded with a magical experience. read more

I really love this store, I walk through often, and the people that work there are fantastic. Really enjoy the selection, and choices they have to offer. I appreciate the special gourmet items. I love the fresh fruits, and vegies, and the selection of mushrooms. Prices of some items are high, but they all ways have things on sale. The fish has a weird detergent smell, like a lemon verbena soap. I cant eat it. Just wasted 10 bucks. Perhaps the smell of cleaning agent is finding its way and permeating the fish. I'm new to Brooklyn and stumbled across Brooklyn Fare the other day. What a place. Best grocer I've been to in years. Why? So lucky to have this in the neighborhood! It arrived just after we did to make it possible to get great groceries any day of the week with just a short walk. The recent expansion definitely improved checkout times; the cheese selection is rad for a neighborhood grocery store; the staff is friendly and knows where everything is (which is good, because it's not always obvious). Occasionally sale items aren't properly entered in the system. Their vegetables also vary from fresh and delicious to middling and starting to go bad-- they definitely don't rotate as frequently as Whole Foods, but on a good day it's great. Ok, nothing beats having a gourmet grocery store across the street from your building. Brooklyn Fare doubled their size recently and have an incredible selection of everything. It's like Union Market, but twice as big, and I mean that in terms of selection as well as price. My wife and I tell ourselves at least once a week that we will only use this store as a place to pick up essential entree items (fish, chicken) on the night we prepare them, and occasional emergency stuff. Inevitably, we buy half of our groceries here (the other half is from Trader Joe's). Generally, the store is great, unbeatable if you have unlimited budget. The selection is decadent, almost pornographic (just check out the gelato/ice cream selection or the beer varieties and you'll understand what I mean). The prices aren't exorbitant, but they're just high enough to make you feel like you're being irresponsible. Again, it's like Union Market, but the place is 5 times larger. read more

One of my favorite supermarkets, and I'm glad it's here. It is on the pricey side, even for staples, but it is good to have a one stop shop for basics and more gourmet items. The cheese, seafood and beer selections are notable standouts. I do prefer Stinky Brooklyn for cheese, and the beer section isn't touching the Bowery Whole Foods, but how many beers to I actually need to chose from? Anyway, they have my favorite beers and some ones I've never heard of to make it interesting. [can you tell I am beer obsessed?]. The produce is pretty good, and a cut above other supermarkets, but I wouldn't be expecting some green market paradise, that is what actual green markets or for. read more

Great neighborhood market with a fair balance of organic crap and the non-organic national brands that most normal people know and love. Very clean and large, it offers a great selection of fresh produce, beer and wine, seafood, onsite butcher, bakery, and even a tiny fromagerie. Today was my first time coming here, which is terrible of me as I have worked by the courthouse nearby for over a year. Their banh mi sandwich was the best if ever had, and it's relatively cheap for the food in that area. There's so many options for lunch there, and it's situated within a grocery store, which is convenient. Seriously, guys, I don't know what they put in this stuff, but it must be addictive because I've been going up to that deli/bakery counter far too often in the past month. I can't put my finger on the flavor - is it cinnamon? especially dark chocolate? rainbow dust? - but whatever it is, it makes for the perfect cup of cocoa. Cheap, too! Very much a gourmet grocery, without Whole Foods' eco-friendly vibe or Dean & Deluca's prices. An excellent cheese counter with several varieties and prices around 5 bucks a chunk. The meat and fish counters are rather small, but geared toward luxury items (mussels! scallops!) A good beer selection at prices to rival other area markets. Produce was not horribly over-priced. This place seems like a good local bet for furnishing your next fancy dinner party without breaking the bank. read more

How to launch a grocery store by the owners of Brooklyn Fare: 1. Lease a space across the street from busy Hoyt-Schermerhorn subway stop. 2. Install an 8" vent on the side of the store at people-level on Hoyt St. 3. Blast potential customers with disgusting steam. 4. Make sure steam engulfs entire sidewalk so that customers must walk through sticky, smelly, mystery steam at least twice a day on their way to and from subway. I think the infamous steam vent speaks pretty well about how the owners of the store feel about the community and their potential customers. If that's not enough for you then please venture inside. There are always one or a few very tall men (the presumed owners) lurking around watching you shop or standing by the cash register impatiently awaiting a sale. read more

They started out well but -- possibly pressured financially by a lack of customers -- have cut back on their stock and raised their prices. At the newly increased price of $8 a pound for ordinary tuna fish salad, no place in Manhattan, not even Citarella, not to mention anywhere in Brooklyn, charges as much. Then go to the green beans for $10/pound. An earlier reviewer praised the beer selection and the availability of singles, but now there is a rude sign saying no singles. They used to have house-made sausage, which was verrrrrry delicious. No more. In short, a store going out of business --- very slowly but unmistakably. read more
