Beautiful museum and the tour at 1:00pm was excellent. The Picasso and Monet exhibits are interesting. Be sure to see wonderful Dinner Party room with all the porcelain plates with female anatomy portraying powerful women around the world in all eras. Visited the Brooklyn Museum for the first time to see the Thierry Mugler exhibit in March 2023! Strangely, I found out about this exhibit because of ads on the subway, so I was very surprised I didn't hear about this exhibit during my trip planning before I came to New York. A quick and easy train ride from Manhattan, this visit to the museum was completely worth it. I was absolutely STUNNED by the Thierry Mugler collections and designs on display! Some of my favorites included: Lady Macbeth Motorcycle outfit All the goth outfits Futuristic armor Mugler lab collection I could have spent all day walking around here if it wasn't for the fact that my time in New York was limited. This review is for the Thierry Mugler exhibit.. If you want to spend 2 exhilarating hours, this is the exhibit. Mugler transformed fashion via his avant-garde creations. The exhibit starts off with a timeline from birth to death chronicling his rise in the Fashion Industry. There is a fascinating artwork of Lady Macbeth via CGI ( I suspect) that transforms her from Lady to murderer. This art will mesmerize you, Mugler created the wondrous costumes for the 1985 Lady Macbeth staging in Paris. You will be bedazzled as you wander from room to room salivating at the gorgeous one of a kind creations His vision was truly spectacular. There is even a space dedicated to his Perfume Collection where you can smell each scent via what looks like the mouthpiece portion of an old telephone. Virgil Abloh: "Figures of Speech" July 1, 2022-January 29, 2023 Great Hall, 1st Floor The Brooklyn Museum's presentation are never-before-seen objects from the artist's archive, as well as a "social sculpture," which draws upon Abloh's background in architecture. The installation offers a space for gathering and performances, and is designed to counter the historical lack of space afforded to Black artists and Black people in cultural institutions. "Figures of Speech" traces Abloh's exploration of the communicative power of design. His use of language and quotation marks turns his designs, and the people who engage with them, into literal figures of speech. The artist uses the Black gaze to dismantle the traditionally white-crafted structures at work in fashion, design, architecture, and art, reconstructing new work through the lens of the Black cultural experience. I had been promised that my mind would be blown by the exquisite Thierry Mugler exhibit, but really, nothing could have prepared me for what I would encounter. If you are considering visiting, grab a ticket immediately. Life-changing. Is it fair to grant the museum five stars when this review is mainly about a visiting exhibit? I think so. I was dreading the crowds ruining my experience but thanks to the Brooklyn Museum's ticket system, it was actually not bad at all. Sure, it was crowded but as you can see from my photos, there was plenty of breathing room and I was able to get my moments alone with the pieces that begged me to behold for longer periods of time. The price was more than fair, a bargain, really and the bookshop even had a great deal for the coffee table book associated with the exhibit. I am ashamed to say that I can't even remember the last time I visited this museum but now I know that I don't have to hesitate the next time a highly anticipated exhibit comes to visit. read more

There are so many different exhibits about different topics and times in history that will interest all different age groups and people with different interests. Good museum to visit in Brooklyn near Crown Heights in Prospect Park. The Brooklyn Museum was founded in 1898. At 560,000 square feet, it was planned to be the largest in the world. Although it is New York City's second largest museum today and contains an art collection with around 1.5 million objects, it does not feel that large and can definitely be explored in a couple of hours. The Beaux-Arts building was designed by McKim, Mead and White, who designed many iconic structures including Madison Square Gardens, the main campus at Columbia and summer homes in Newport, RI. We started at the fifth floor and worked our way down. Loved the behind-the-scenes collection. Open the glass door and explore the floor to ceiling collection of everything and anything. Pull out the drawers to find miniatures, silverware, embroidery, ceramics and more. From large bronze sculptures to a bike with fur handles, you never know what you might find. The exhibit Monet to Morisot: The Real and Imagined in European Art focused not only on the changes in art during a period of significant societal transformation, but how and why those pieces were collected and the impact on museum collections today. I enjoyed the recognition of the narrow view of who were and who were not the artistic masters recognized during that time. It was nice to see paintings by Berthe Morisot displayed along with works by Henri Matisse, Vasily Kandinsky Claude Monet, and Auguste Rodin. The fourth floor has several very interesting collections. The Dinner Party by Judith Chicago is the centerpiece of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art. Make sure that you enter from beginning and read the information or the piece may not make sense. The Dinner Party is designed as massive ceremonial triangular banquet table. Thirty-nine place settings commemorate an important woman from history. Each chosen woman is honored with a personalized embroidered runner, gold chalice, and a painted porcelain plate. An additional 999 women are recognized in gold on the white tile floor below the triangular table. A very unique installation. Death to the Living, Long Live Trash by Duke Riley was fascinating. Riley takes single use waste and repurposes the plastic containers, detergent bottles, toothbrushes, and other items into contemporary interpretations of scrimshaw. Originally scrimshaw works were ink drawings etched into bone by sailors. It is a commentary on all of the plastic waste that is produced and accumulated. He also created fishing lures out of tampon applicators. Watch the film that accompanies the collection to learn more especially how the community is trying to remediate damage to waterways from these plastics. The second and third floors are filled with treasures from ancient Egypt, the Roman and Greek Empires and Asia. Check out the Book of the Dead and the mummies on these floors. We visited using reciprocity admission from NARM. The museum also offers free programs on First Saturdays and free admissions to Health Care workers and military which includes family members. While in Brooklyn, we stopped in to catch the Spike Lee exhibit and it was far more fascinating than I anticipated. Nothing only did we get the opportunity to glimpse into his childhood, but also his collectibles. One really cool thing was seeing the handwritten, bound books of his first movies. I also loved seeing a few of his 1st edition books from James Baldwin and Zora Neele Hurston. He also had a beautiful portrait of my favorite author, Toni Morrison. The exhibit was far bigger than I thought it would be as well. I would say block off about 1.5-2 hours to look at everything, including the items in the bookstore. Hopefully, I can get back up there before the African Fashion exhibit leaves. read more

Last time I set foot here was for Dior's couture exhibit... and this time was for Thierry Mugler's exhibit on the 5th floor. It was totally reasonable for an admission price of $25/per person with student tickets being $16 on the weekends. It's amazing the thought and process behind all the fashion pieces. They really do a great job of curating the selections and putting a spin on it that makes it theatrical and magical, which depicts Mugler well. The layout of the exhibits are easy to navigate. This exhibit is ending on May 7! We also appreciated that scents were included. It's truly an exhibit that engages all your senses. Another compelling exhibit currently showing at the museum 4th floor was Mary Enoch Elizabeth Baxter's "Ain't I a Woman," where my eyes were unable to peel away from the screen of the musical documentary regarding reproductive injustice and racial vulnerabilities in our society. There is construction going on during the building so if you're walking between floor 1-3 you may hear some sounds, just as a side note. read more

Went to the Thierry Mugler show with my friend Shelley. We reserved tickets for 1pm. Couldn't have been easier to get there from Manhattan! You step off the 2 or 3 train, and it is RIGHT THERE! We were 40 minutes early, so we wandered through the gift shop, which is fun. I bought taxi, pizza, avocado toast, and Cholula Christmas ornaments. 25% off! The show is SPECTACULAR. Tons of his outfits, portraits of icons, a Lady Macbeth vignette, the Too Funky video, Lots of biographical information on Mugler, and some portraits of him. Damn. He was GORGEOUS! It took us over an hour to see everything. I totally need a wasp waist, and have to get my giant hat out of its box. Such FUN fashion!! Not practical, generally, although there are suits and coats. There's an element of fetishism, and the "Les Insectes" collection grossed me out because I LOATHE BUGS. But his talent is undeniable. His clothes are memorable! read more

Good museum, but I feel the Moma and Met have an extra layer of excitement that the Brooklyn Museum was missing. Loved seeing the Monet and Kaws work. Hardly any security guards from what I saw. Really pretty natural scenic paintings. The mummy and Egypt exhibit on the third floor was so cool. Insane that that even happened and that we stored it. If I were a museum, I'd hate to be the Brooklyn Museum! You see, with world-renown institutions like the Met, Guggenheim, and MoMA just a stone throw away, it's hard to compete. Tourists often opt for the big names and the convenient Manhattan locations, which this museum is neither. But I am glad a made the hike (well, the subway rides) to come here- because this is a great museum that is very mindful of its name - the name of a unique city in the New York's history -- You'd find works of artists based or had lived in Brooklyn, you find tributes to hero's with roots in Brooklyn, and you'd find art that speaks for the city. The huge wooden dolls ("Along the Way" by Brooklyn based artist Kaws ) at the entrance set a great tone of this museum tie to the community. The special exhibit (to September 2022) Guadalupe Maravilla: Tierra Blanca Joven tells the artist's personal story of migration, illness, and recovery, and the need for care and healing (see photos of Disease Throwers). On upper floors you'd find objects that tell the American stories such as portrait of George Washington; sculpture of Abraham Lincoln, etc. There is also a corner dedicated to Ruth B Ginsberg. They also have some impressionist works and quite a few modern pieces - good assortment of different periods of art works. I wouldn't say this is a bucket list type of must-see museums but they certainly did a great job in living up to their name. Budget 1/2 a day to a day as it is huge. Within walking distance from the NYC subway Eastern Parkway- Brooklyn Museum station so pretty easy to get to. read more

The museum and don't quote me on this is well over a century old. I don't know the exact history of when it started or when and if there were additions but the subway station that leads to it is at least close to 100 years old. It certainly makes you feel like time goes by too fast. They have a lot of Egyptian art and a lot of African art as well as 17th to 20th century paintings and sculptures. I really like the American art paintings such as the one of George Washington. Prepare to spend hours here as it is a very large place to visit. read more

On the first Saturday of every month, the museum is free from 5-11pm and they offer a phenomenal line-up of music, interactive activities, and refreshments. Since the pandemic, this is now a ticketed event and tickets sell out fast but if you come early enough, they also offer tickets at the door. A variety of food trucks park outside the museum and in the warmer months, lots of people grab food and enjoy the vibe on the benches outside. This event is definitely a scene and it's beautiful to see the diversity, fashion, and culture of the crowd. It is certainly one of the many gems of the Brooklyn community. The museum's Egyptian and Asian art easily rival the collections at the Met, though they are smaller in size. They also have great temporary exhibits. The architecture of the museum is a remarkable blend of modern and traditional. Definitely worth a trip any day. read more

Great option for the broke ones out there on blazing hot/rainy days. It's pay what you wish (at least $1 if you get the tickets online). Although there's five floors, the museum is a lot smaller than say the MET, but unlike the MET, I was able to view everything within a few hours and before my feet got too tired. When I went last weekend, the air con wasn't working in some sections on the fifth floor so they had huge fans turned on, but they were honestly not enough. They also closed off the third floor (not sure why), so my friend couldn't see her fav: the mummies. I enjoyed the DEATH TO THE LIVING, Long Live Trash exhibition the most. It was cool to see what types of trash were repurposed into art! I liked that the museum had lounging areas in the lobby and in a more discreet area on the first floor, a super small cafeteria, and a restaurant. The restaurant seemed legit too. read more

(Alabama transplant), I'm trying to take advantage of the variety of things offered within a couple hours drive of where I've been transplanted too Got a notice that the museum was showcasing "Spike Lee", and, having always enjoyed his works, I took a day off and drove up on a Wednesday. As Gomer would say...Surprise Surprise Surpise! Here I thought I was going to see a few items associated with just his works. Only to realize I was able to spend nearly 3hrs reading each and every bit of info on the hundreds of artistic & sportific (not a word) memorabilia that has come into his possession. Whether a direct purchase of Jordan's rookie cards, a Nelson (and Winifred) Mandela personally autographed flag to Lee, first editions books by Langston Hughes, trumpets by Marsalises, First editions of movie "poster ads" from Scorcese to spike Lee himself. Clips from scenes and music dances and Malcom X speeches are almost endless. Original clothing designed specifically for an event, a movie, a boxing match...or just for him for an awards show The list simply goes on and on You also get a behind-the man-info...if you were not already aware (I was not). I did know his sister had been in his movies, and he'd done some collaboration with other siblings, but I had no idea that his father was a jazz artist who contributed heavily to Spikes first few movies. Nor did I know his grandmother went to Spelmam...and paid HIS way through Morehouse. Or that he didnt get his first camera UNTIL college. And I guess I never really followed his personal life to think of him having kids I have NO IDEA where he keeps this personal collection: a plethora of family, music, film, sports, history that's is truly extraordinary Made me consider (and still might) doing a Spike Lee marathon between now and 2024! ///break/// BK Museum: I def will return!. This museum was fantastic! It has so many different areas so we didn't get to explore them all. I definitely will need to go back. I especially loved that the museum called out that it was also part of the history of colonialism by having certain exhibits and items. I very much enjoyed the curated exhibits. Brooklyn Museum is hosting an incredible exhibit until the end of February. Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams Christian Dior became one of the world's most recognized names in Haute Couture fashion. This exhibit is a must for anyone who loves fashion. The museum is easy to get to from Manhattan. Take the Q to Barclays Center and switch to the 2 or 3, exit at Eastern Pkwy - Brooklyn Museum. Super easy. This exhibit brings together the House of Dior from its beginning and showcases each of the 6 designers after his death. The amazing French designer is associated with luxury, glamour, sophistication, and originality. From Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, Jackie Kennedy to current A list celebrities, the gowns, and photos are all on display. I usually can run through a museum in under an hour, but this had me enthralled and I couldn't believe I was in there for over 2 1/2 hours and loved every minute. The entire exhibit is perfectly crafted, well-executed and the one thing Christian Dior wanted to emulate... elegance. read more

My husband and I visited the Brooklyn Museum last month to see "Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys." What an exhibit. With works by Derrick Adams, Basquiat, Gordon Parks, Tschabalala Self, Amy Sherald, Michalene Thomas, and so many more artists I wasn't as familiar with, this exhibit was fantastic. It is really popular if the crowds when we visited are any indication, so I definitely recommend buying tickets online before you show up (the line to buy tickets in person was really long). We also visited the permanent collection. I really loved the decorative arts and design, the contemporary arts, and the Asian art collections. Judy Chicago's The Dinner Party was a surprise and a delight - and one of the highlights of our visit. They have a restaurant and more of a to go/casual cafe, which was great for a snack on the go as we were leaving the museum. Overall, a great museum, and I'd happily return for again when they have another great exhibit. read more

We came here on Saturday (free admission). The museum is huge and has multiple floors. I really enjoyed visiting this museum because it was spacious and not crowded. Best of all, it is easy to get to due to its location. They have some old artifacts along with some contemporary art. The most interesting exhibit was the Egyptian exhibit and holy moly that was huge. There was so much to see. There is also an Asian, Mexican and African Exhibit. You definitely need two to three hours here in order to complete the entire museum. A thumbs up and yes this is one of my favorite museums while visiting NYC. read more

I visited this museum on one of their free First Saturdays - the first Saturday night of every month is free from 5pm to 11pm. The Brooklyn Museum is actually the second biggest museum in New York City, after the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Speaking of the Met, this museum is actually very similar and also features art from all over the world. You will see art from Ancient Egypt, Africa, Europe, and more. If you have already been to the Met, a visit here may feel redundant. The main difference is that this place is not as big, has a smaller variety of world art, and leans more heavily towards American artists. However, the Brooklyn Museum is still a great museum in its own right. read more

Not sure how I have lived in NYC for almost 10 years and not been here sooner... The Brooklyn Museum was well worth the visit. While the building looks large from the outside, the exhibits are a bit more intimate than you might expect. There is plenty to see, but this is less overwhelming than the Met, and you can accomplish a lot in one visit. The Christian Dior temporary exhibit that is currently on view was very, very well done. My friend and I really enjoyed it. The design of the exhibit was beautiful, with lighting effects in the main/central room really highlighting the fashion. If you are looking for more traditional paintings, you can visit the 5th Floor, but there is also a wide variety here that goes beyond what you might expect from an art museum. Wonderful museum, and a beacon of art and culture for the local community. I've been coming to the Brooklyn Museum for a long time, since well before I moved to Brooklyn. At the time the entrance was through what is now the second floor, before they excavated the basement and built a two-story glass entrance pavilion[1] and created the new Visitor center and entrance lobby that opened in 2004. There are some spectacular pieces of art on display here: the Ancient Egypt galleries, with the mummy chamber and some wonderful statues and figurines[2]; the twelve Assyrian reliefs from the palace of King Ashur-nasir-pal II[3]; the Dinner Party by Judy Chicago, part of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art; Napoleon Leading the Army over the Alps by Kehinde Wiley[4] In more recent years the curators have focused on contemporary art and culture, such as JR: Chronicles of NYC[5], Garry Winograd, Pierre Cardin, David Bowie, Studio 54, Basquiat, The Rise of Sneaker Culture and, more recently, KAWS. I highly recommend stopping by the Visible Storage/Study Center[6], a storage facility that provides open access to more than 2,000 of the many thousands object that are part of the American collection and that are not on display. A rare glimpse at the inner workings of the museum. Pre-covid the first Saturday of every month admission to the museum would be free, and there will be a lot of things going on, from live music, to movies, to dance, to various performances. It was such a fun party that brought the entire Brooklyn community together. There is now a pop-up market on the Brooklyn Museum Plaza every Sunday, and on the stairs they often project movies, have yoga classes, or people just use them to work out or as an impromptu theater[7]. As a father, I want to stress out how much this institution means for me and my family. In cold winter days, we used to take our son here, bring lunch, and just hang out in the lobby. You didn't even need to buy a ticket. The lobby is now closed due to covid, but we since became members and I can't recommend the membership enough if you love art, and if you live nearby and have small children. The majestic Beaux-Art Courts on the third floor is a wonderful open space where kids can just run without the worry that they may destroy a piece of art. And they can also wonder at the Rodin statues at the back[8], or the paintings on the walls. The parking lot is open to the public, and alongside statues there are picnic benches; I've seen quite a few parties take place on those benches. I just love it here. The rotating collections never disappoint. They are always working hard to bring interesting collections and events to keep the community engaged. We visited Brooklyn Museum a couple of times for different exhibitions and this time it was for KAWS, who is one of my husband's favorite & Brooklyn-based artists. The arrangement of the exhibition was fine but the collection was limited and the souvenir was 80% sold out. We were kind of disappointed. read more

The exhibit was a very unique perspective from Paul McCartney. His Pentax photos was what he saw while touring the U.S. my wife and gained another layer of the fandom experience. read more

PROS: This museum is the best in the area. Paintings, statues, furniture, glassware, etc all of history in all eras around the world. It has 5 floors of history and even modern art. People there are nice, you only need to pay at least $1 for admission (through the app) CONS: No parking at all near this place. you need to rely on street parking which there obviously is never available. They also close early, at 5:45pm when it should be 8pm OVERALL: 100% you need to come visit this place if you are in Brooklyn. If you appreciate history of any type this is the place to go read more

This was the first time I visited this museum. I have to say that this was very enjoyable for my day in Brooklyn. This place has 5 floors. Each floor there is something different. This particular day was the first Saturday and they alway have social gathering and entertainment going on. The artifact for each floor were interesting and there is an abundance of artifacts to see. They have a food court. Parking is available for a fee. read more

Enjoyed the Friday outing to go and and check out the Dior exhibit which was just so mesmerizing, glamorous and beautiful. I've never really been into any form of art but there are some forms of art that I enjoy. Fashion is one of them and photography is another. Both of which I was able to see at the museum today. I loved how each section had an explanation of the the designer at that moment in time. Definitely a learning experience for me. The tickets are not cheap. If you're not a member, you need to purchase entrance tickets and exhibit tickets. Exhibit tickets alone are normally $25. You can opt to purchase a 6 month membership card for $39 and that's includes the entrance fee and exhibit which is already worth it. I also checked out the Obama portraits which was very short. Not much to look at but you also need to get a timed entry ticket for this exhibit which is included in the ticket price. The museum is pretty big. Definitely could not finish checking out the whole museum. The staff is very nice. 5 star service at the ticket counter. One of my friends had an accident and I was worried you couldn't refund the ticket and the staff said it's not a problem at all as long ad the ticket isn't scanned. read more

Among NYC museums I have been to, it is the smallest in terms of the building size. It has less exhibits on our day of visit , it may because the place recently just opened up after a year of closure due to Covid. I enjoyed the front of the building wherein we were able to hang out on its iconic steps. There is food truck selling quick and easy bites snacks as the inside cafe is closed. The exhibition scheduled for this season is not into my liking. We will come back for another visit if there is something that will interest us. A mask is required upon entry and entire time of stay inside the building. read more
