I saw a "Direct Hire" Event for 2/13/2025 posted on Indeed for $20.25 to $20.75 / hour, for Steuben…read moreFarms in Elma, NY, so I decided to follow through with my application online, with a resume through Indeed, and then, as it requested in the job posting, brought a copy of my resume to the in person Steuben Farms Direct Hire at the factory. When all of us got through security and filed upstairs, we were first given the token question, "did you bring your resume? A paper copy?" I had mine, but the other adults did not, and they were scolded and made to be fools for forgetting their paper copies, like they were children. That wasn't a great start, in my opinion. Next we were all seated at tables, only feet apart from one another, and then the lady, who I would later find our worked for SPS Agency, started to hand us a big stack of papers to fill out, and when ready we're supposed to let her know we were set and ready to be interviewed. Again, we were only feet apart from one another, so obviously everyone within ear shot could hear the whole thing. The guy sitting across from me was asked, by the SPS Agency lady, "I understand you took an Uber today, would you be taking an Uber as you are working? If not, how would you get to work?".. the guy, visibly embarrassed, knowing everyone could hear the conversation said that his girlfriend could drive him, and the lady asked him, quite sternly, "and if she can't drive you, then who would?". He said his Mom would drive him. The lady stepped back and exclaimed, "you still live at home..with your mother!" People close by looked up when she said this loudly, and started to listen a bit more closely, as she continued to ask him, "where are you working now?".. the guy visibly embarrassed said, "I am a manager at an Arby's Restaurant".. she seemed shocked.. and I felt sorry for the guy. This woman had no right to embarrass the guy, that way, in front of everyone nearby us, that could hear. I was literally sitting about 6 inches in front of him, at the table, I heard and saw everything that was said and done. Shameful agency to do that to someone. I can remember years ago people wouod be dropped off by their parents for jobs, and most younger people nowadays can't even aford their own vehicle. When it was my turn, I was told, by this lady to go see the other lady for my interview. When I talked to the other lady, she seemed much nicer and more agreeable than the first, but I was surprised when she said, "since you have no prior food packaging experience, you won't be direct hire, you will be working through our SPS Agency, you will be on a 3 month probation period, with a flat rate of $17.25 / hour..you will be reporting to work at Steuben Farms, but we will be paying you though our SPS Agency, and you need to call us every Friday to get your work schedule and you will let us know which days you can work.. they work Monday to Sunday so there will many days to choose from..if you work more days, you will be closer to that direct hire job and pay." This interview was on a Thursday, so she told me very nicely.. "we should have a schedule later on today, before 5pm, if you don't receive a call, call me tomorrow, just before 10am to get the schedule for the week, so you can pick your available days to work." I thought this was great. I did not get a call before 5pm that night..so I called SPS Temp Agency 9:45am the next morning. This is where I started to get the feeling something was not right with this SPS Agency. When I called, the woman on the phone was nasty, "we only got half the work schedule right now, call us back later".. I waited until about 11:30am, and called SPS again.. even more of the same nasty attitude, "we got the entire schedule, but nothing is available right now, call back next Friday." I asked, "but what about all those available days they talked about at the direct hire event".. she was quite short with me, "it goes by seniority in our agency, with who is already on our lists for hiring". If you use the SPS Agency, every time you are scheduled to work at your job, you must call them an hour before to verify that you are going to work, and you are required to verify your pay through your work, and let the SPS Agency know if there are any issues, because the SPS Agency is paying you, not the business you are physically working for, and you must physically go to the local SPS Agency to pick up your check, in person, they do not have direct deposit. Too many hoops to jump through to use SPS Agency, crazy to think this was a legitimate Direct Hire event..that was using this SPS Agency. They must not have gotten enough gullible takers on the first event, they just had another event this past week, and they never called me from their first event I attended. If SPS Agency is at your next hopeful hiring event, run away, run far away! Complete waste of my time! Luckily I got hired directly with a company somewhere else. This SPS Agency is a nasty joke!
