I spent something like $4300 in hard currency on Craft when I was visiting in 2018, back when Chase - ex-Michigan - one of the penultimate Craftistas was tending the taps and a guy I ran up a $280 bar bill with one evening stopped talking to me after we split it. Hmmmm, maybe I drink too much? No, that can't be it. They have like 18 taps on with a lot a guest taps (I'm not that excited by their own efforts) and a truly righteous selection of all NZ Craft. McLeod's and Alibi Breweries at the top of form. Still, It's kinda like a Craft Disneyland with those 1980s Disney prices (remember? You want to go on every ride, but they're $148 each). With 18 on tap and around 200 bottled options (they are an off-licence retailer too), choosing your tipple of choice can be difficult. Had a great night here on Friday at the Zeffer Spring Party. I believe Zeffer did a 'tap takeover' that night, but there was still plenty of beer to sample along with the delicious cider. Massive range of bottled beer from all round the world too. The staff were all friendly and knowledgeable about the huge range of cider and beer - their own and brewed on site. Interesting space, not too small, plus can stand and talk around high tables outside. Didn't have any food but saw others eating something tasty... We visited late on a Saturday afternoon in January based on a word of mouth recommendation from a friend. It looks like the bar still has a bit of work to be done and the layout is kind of confusing with the service area looking like a reception desk or shop counter. And this place is definitely part shop but at the time of our visit perhaps seemed a bit more shop than bar - despite all the people hanging around drinking. Hopefully the long bar to the side will eventually be where you get your drinks from, because once a few mates of the staff pulled their stools up to the counter, it was a bit of a squish getting in there to order drinks. Despite this, the pizza we ordered was delicious (this place is not about the food and the menu is sparse but we were hungry), and the beer selection outstanding as you would expect from an independently owned brew bar. There's a choice of 18 beers on tap and many more in the fridge.This is definitely the highest number of boutique beer brands in one place I've ever seen. You can also stock up and take home your favourites; either cold from the fridge or off the shelf for later. Situated in another of Auckland's new "precincts" (The City Works Depot), Brothers Brewery is destined to be one of Auckland's hot spots in 2013. At the moment it seems a bit lonely and you have to request the key to use the shared bathroom but I don't doubt there are good things in store for Brothers Brewery once the teething problems are addressed. read more

The glorified shed is furnished with salvaged couches and recycled wood in expertly trendy fashion. Then it gets nostalgic with Thunderbirds toys and Tintin comics and board games. By now you have already picked out which couch you will be sitting in and it's time to choose a beer. A great range of boutique beers (and plenty of them from New Zealand) are on offer. (Drinking "boutique beers" does not mean you will turn into a shirt-tucking, snobbish connoisseur, who turns his nose up to anything cheaper than $20 a glass). Throw more than a dozen of these on tap, some expert product knowledge from the staff, some alternative beats and a comfy seat and you have a pretty happy 21st century boy. We came here the other night for a big group catch up. It was a bit hard to find, but after walking around the neighbourhood and trying to figure out exactly where Google maps was trying to point us, we found. It's kind of in a random area of warehouses, and this bar seems to be in a garage sort of a set up, but it's done up really nicely inside, as though it is a 1960's bach - there's even vintage games like Game of Life that you can play! They have a million craft beers to choose from. So so many. You can order a sampler tray of a variety of beers to try. Their non-beer options are not very wide, but they have a really fancy selection of gourmet creaming sodas that come with cool straws. We ordered a pizza which was ok - the food choices are minimal, pizza or toasted sandwich, but I don't think you come here for the food - it's all about the beer choices. We were at the outside table and once the bar closed up, we were all left outside - suddenly not a bunch of people drinking at a bar, but now a group of people loitering in an alley! So we left. As someone who had not been to New Zealand before, I wanted to visit a place that had a wide selection of what the country has to offer. From what I understand, the New Zealand craft beer scene is solid already and is quickly growing even more. The trends in styles that are popular seem to mirror those seen in the U.S, such as the hazy/New England IPA. Anyway, Brothers Beer itself is a brewery and you can see a couple of tanks off to the side. In addition to serving their own beer, Brothers also has beer from several other breweries. Fortunately, if you can't commit to just one or want to try several, there is an option to get a flight/tasters. I had beers from: - Brothers Beer - Piha Beer - Hallertau Brewery - Laughing Bones Brewing Co - Tuatara While the beers itself weren't the best I ever had, I do think there are pretty good. The space at this particular location is really awesome with an open layout and a variety of seating options, like couches and tables. In case you want to buy beer for takeaway, there's plenty of selection available by the counter. Stopped in for a flight after just arriving from a short flight. Beer tender was a nice guy and gave me some suggestions on other places to try during my stay. The flight itself ranged from a tropical IPA, smoked amber, standard IPA, double IPA and one other I cant remember. However, the selection of beer on tap is where this place really shines. The staff are friendly and provided sample tastes and are knowledgeable and passionate about the beers. What a cool, little place! We were starving after exploring Auckland and decided to stop in at Brothers Beer for a late lunch and libation. Admittedly, beer was our priority, but we were pleasantly surprised by how delicious their thin-crust pizza was! We got the bacon and pineapple variety, and it paired perfectly with the beer flight. They carry more than just their own beers, so we were able to try other NZ breweries on this visit. We took advantage of the pleasant weather and good view of Sky Tower, and sat at one of their outdoor community tables. There is paid parking lot in the area, and although it was a quiet afternoon, I can see how trying to drive in could present an issue. When visiting New Zealand you definitely need to come and try Brothers Beer. It is off the beaten path a bit but it's worth it. The atmosphere here is very relaxed , I thought it was quite hipster actually with older looking furniture and some cool memorabilia on the walls and shelves. They have a small menu for food here and be warned once they run out of food to make more than a few dishes on their menu they do not serve alcohol anymore. I came in for a pint , I was there 15 minutes and they started taking the chairs up like they were closing. They had to turn multiple people away because their only option was to take some beer to go, not to drink on premises because of the no food issue. I thought this was very strange, I've been a lot of places and I've never had this happen to me before. I was disappointed because I would have like to try more beer too. Polite staff and good service but the closing early because they ran out of food was bizarre. read more

I am certainly not an authority on beer - but my friends are, and they love this place. It's all part of the craft beer movement that has been sweeping through the country (and obvs. worldwide) for a few years now, so if you don't like craft beer (how could you not - it's delicious!) I don't think you'll have a very fun time. A friend of mine who does not like craft beer could not find any enjoyment from this place. The atmosphere is cool, and you're a stone's throw from Best Ugly, Scratch Bakery and of course, the Food Truck Garage. Though I'm not sure whether the timing of the first two complement Brothers.... The only thing I'll say is that the line is a pain in the ass. Given that the bar itself is reasonably small, and they've wanted to pack in as much seating as possible, the line, when busy, wraps its way around the seating and out the door. The line doesn't seem to go particularly fast either - perhaps more to do with our eftpos culture than anything else, I'm not sure. Anyway, it has delicious craft beer, and those who I consider to be 'in the know' like it there. I'm a fan and always have a good time there. read more

If it's craft beer your after this is by far a one stop shop. I usually start with a couple of their own in house brews as they always have something different to peak your interest and top off the night with something a little more odd from the selection of bottles in the fridge. Last time I visited I tried a Bacon Maple beer. Though not something you would drink all night it was an enjoyable experience. Give it a go. If I would change anything it would be to increase the food available, though the pizza is excellent I often wish I could get more to munch while I'm there. But then Beer Brothers is surrounded by food outlets so you won't go hungry, I guess I just never want to leave. read more

Yes, I'm a big beer fan, and this is one of the good spots in Auckland to go. Lots of taps, and they do a great job of getting a good selection of beers through. They recently started brewing on site as well so it is interesting to try their creations. Overall this is a great place to catch up with some friends and try different styles of beers. There is a wide range on offer, but it is a bit pricy. Bought a canned beer from Wellington the other day (330mL) for $12.50, considering it is in local stores for $6. The real value for money here is the tasting tray. They are well sized tasting glasses. You get to select any five beers off tap to have on the tray. I noticed the other day they are now giving you a print out of what you purchased so now it is easier to keep track and remember what you liked. Food is great, the pizzas are a winner. My only wish, is to see some sort of tap chalkboard or screen to make it easier to select which beers you want. Makes it hard sometimes when there are a lot of people cueing and you are trying to lean over the counter to read the hand written labels on the far end taps. read more

A new addition to the Auckland scene, Brothers is one cool bar. I went here last night for some early evening drinks. It was a little bit hard to find but there is a heap of parking once you do find it. We walked in and actually thought for a second that it was a boys only bar, until we spotted about 3 other girls. This actually makes for quite a cool vibe. It's like a really stylish man cave. Its big and light and the décor is quite kitschy with op shop style couches along with the tall leaners. There is a huge and very unique selection of beers and they also brew their own onsite. The one I tried was really yum, and the staff member was very helpful after I basically just asked him to tell me what to do. There are also woodfired pizzas which I didn't try, but they look amazing. A very cool place. read more

Brews from their in-house Brewery and from across NZ on tap. They have about 20 taps in their laid-back brewhouse/tasting room. We went on a weekday afternoon, and the hip row of shops where the brewery is located was more hopping than I expected. You step into the industrial, hewn-wood building and are immediately greeted by the smell of roasted grain. They had just had a big brew day the previous, the tap master informed us. We decided to do a sampler, which included any 6 of the taps for $20. They were pretty good sized poors. We tried a few sours, some IPAs, a stout. It was welcome to see such variety after being on the South Island where it was difficult to find anything more flavorful than a Pilsner. We sat outside on the nice tables they had. People beside us ordered food, so I assume they have a menu but we just stuck with beers. read more

If you squint into the wasteland, you will see the sign. Once through the door (another few seconds of confusion) there is beer, beer everywhere. The vibe is retro-industrial and it's easy to get comfortable quickly. The fridges are chock-a-block full of bottles, the taps behind the bar look low-tech but beer comes out them.
