They don't take credit cards just checks and cash. Bring your own bags for your veggies. Although they have a butcher who prepares fresh meat to order, I have never purchased their meal. They also sell a plethora of Spanish foods, spices, and canned goods that you can't find in regular grocery stores.

The overall focus is on providing lots of fruit and veg as possible for dirt-cheap prices. FYI- Ca$h only. You'll find heartier fruit and veg like apples, oranges, plantains, potatoes, eggplants, broccoli, onions, etc- with one partitioned cashier area if you're shopping on this outdoor side of Viva. I was stoked with the Raspberries, Blueberries and some root veggie prices, then branched out upstairs to the indoor part of Viva. Here, you'll find the greens, other fruit and veg, prepackaged crackers, bagged spices, a very small fish 'dept', several cashiers and the Deli on one end. Service is straight to the point with a 'nothing more, nothing less' mentality. My plantains, bagged cinnamons sticks, Star Anise, limes and a few other things were in tip-top shape. However, both my 99¢ each raspberries looked pretty on top- but weren't necessarily the creme of the crop. Bottom line? Pick and choose what you buy. Bear in mind though- you'll rack up in quality and price- ESPECIALLY if you go with the loose items. For prepackaged items like berries and what-not, skip it.

They also have a lot of food necessities and household items. Their flower section is inexpensive and not bad at all - a good place if you want to pick up some everyday flowers for your lady or mom. They'll make fresh bouquets of roses for you if you can find someone. They've always had the 2 registers in the middle of the store which caused 2 lines forming. Now, the cashiers are in the corner and the bright customers can never figure out how to form a line or two. People are all over the place, blocking aisles, and cutting each other off.

Now, I'm sure commercial landlords are used to tenants asking them to rearrange window and door placements on the street front, but to pull down the front wall entirely? I don't think I've ever seen that before. So... needless to say, this place never closes! There's always a really huge selection of fruits and vegetables out front (hence the name of the store, I think) and they're all really reasonably priced, if not downright cheap. Other than that, it's just a really large bodega with an unusual selection of herbs and chilis and other such things I don't recognize from my conservative suburban upbringing. :) Mostly I just enjoy coming here to make jokes about not being unemployed in Greenland. But that just goes to show I've seen The Princess Bride far too many times.
