This last time that I went, I got hard to find food products. I got frozen jute leaves for my Haitian friend. I got dried taro leaves for my Filipino co-worker. I myself got: bamboo leaves, frozen banana leaves, frozen bitter leaves, preserved duck eggs, fresh water chestnuts and tons of spices. I bought some meat from the butcher section and the guy sliced the meat up to my request. They have bones for soup. I saw durians, banana flowers, sorrel flowers, two types of bitter melons(the Asians and the Guyanese type), etc etc. They have Mexican products, Indonesian, Thai, Malaysian, Filipino, Indian and of course Chinese products. There is a huge variety of products to make dishes from at least half of the world. It is a typical Chinese grocery store. The aisles are clean and stocked with a lot of items. For example, the noodle aisle is 1/4 full of all types and width of rice noodles. So for those gluten free people, they will think that they are in heaven. They have other types as well. At the time, I was interested in getting noodles to make a few bowls of pho...therefore the bones and meat for it. They also have mushroom oyster sauce for the gluten free people. I digress. Anyways, give this supermarket a try. Don't get deter by the fish market with fishy smell when you walk in. If I were the owner, I would have put the fish shop in the back. BUT, what's done is done. So this Chinese supermarket specializing in Asian items and also Central-American items ----…read morebecause a lot of their customers are Central-American immigrants ---- is 100% Chinese: all the staff are Chinese. They're not going to chit-chat with you about the latest news story in the New York Post. It's pure business: you walk in, if you want seafood that's still swimming in the tank, or, if you want fresh vegetables which aren't sold at Key Food, then, this place will pretty much have it. Other than that there's lots of Instant Ramen ---- from Japan, Korea, China, Malaysia, Vietnam ---- and lots of spices from both Asia and the Caribbean. And a "Goya" section too. Oh, Kimichi, did I mention Kimchi in glass jars? And yes, they do have basics ---- milk, eggs, cheese, meat, cat food. A great little addition to the Bronx, well worth a visit. A lot more interesting to wander through and see some interesting imported items you might want to buy; more fun than Key Food. Well worth a visit.

A must visit market for your fruits and veggies. The farmers' that come here are small family-owned farms from NY & NJ! Everything they carry is fresh, local, and organic with no pesticides or spray. And as if all of the above PLUS having a farmers' market up here in the Bronx isn't amazing enough their prices are ridiculous!!! They are often the same if not cheaper than the regular stuff we find in our supermarkets. Really, I find this to be pretty incredible because organic food is usually so much more expensive, but not here. I went there today and picked up apples, plums, peaches, kale, red basil (smells AMAZING), eggplant, zucchini, cucumbers, tomato, beets and organic corn (I stressed organic because what we find in stores is mostly genetically modified corn) - my total was under $25. The market often has cooking demos and you can always find literature on food education, recipes, seasonality, recycling, etc. and the beautiful ladies that organize this truly do an amazing job and are very passionate about everything the market stands for. I went to the farmers market this week up in Kingsbridge since I missed the Saturday one in Inwood. When I arrived to the market I was...surprised. There's only one stand! When I think of a farmers market I imagine 10+ vendors selling a variety of locally sourced goods. The stand that was there only has fruits and veggies. I didn't think to ask at the time if there are more vendors during the spring/summer season. The individuals that were running this particular stand were warm and welcoming! At the market I picked up zucchini, squash, and a mini-bucket of brussel sprouts. My favorite part of this market was its affordability - those three items for $5.75?! Sign. Me. UP! The veggies were fresh and great in my dinner Sunday evening. At the end of the day I did have to run to Aldi to pick up items I was hoping to purchase at this market. But it won't stop me from coming back since the prices can't be beat, and I hope they can feature more vendors in the future!

I also love how RF sells other little goodies besides whole fruits and vegetables that feel like a special treat, like Halavah and Babybell Cheese, various Asian pantry goods, pomegranate arils in tiny packages and gorgeous bouquets of fresh flowers. I love stopping here on my way to visit someone and picking up something special for them. RF is definitely not cheap, but you get what you pay for. I've never left here unsatisfied with my produce. And the folks who own the place and run the register are so sweet.
