Food was really good! For a bar-like setting, the food far exceeded your regular British-pub food.

Hands up who likes Belgian beer? Then please let me direct you to Brouge. First of all, its a surprising treat to get here. As you walk up Richmond High Street, past all the chain bars and restaurants, a little sign catches you eye - but it is at foot level. Brouge is located in the basement of a building, so you have to walk down stone steps, and push open a heavy wooden door to get in. The inside is pleasingly designed with cosy, sleek leather booths. I was with friends who wanted to make their way through the Belgian beer list, and it is comprehensive beyond your wildest dreams. I lost count of the varied amount of beer that were on tap, but I saw blonde bier (using the Belgian spelling), brown bier, fruit bier, Trappist bier, as well as ales. Pages and pages of all types of beer. They all went down a treat - apart from for me, who doesn't like beer! Sorry everyone. Still, there was plenty to eat and drink, and non beer drinkers needn't feel left out. The lunch and dinner menu is also Belgian themed, one speciality is mussels, done 4 different ways. I also spied larger plates, like Belgian sausage and mash. I was pleased to see that there was plenty of wine on offer, and they thoughtfully suggested matches of meals to the drinks. The wine list does jump up in price though, most of the bottles were £25.00 or up. There were a handful of house wines which were under £15.00, thankfully. Perhaps next time I come here I will try out a couple of beers? I guess this is the place to do so. read more

Chose this place based on the other reviewer ratings on Yelp and agree. 4 stars from me too. Brouge has a good range of beers on tap with some less common finds as well as a good selection of bottled beers and craft beers from Europe and from the States. The interior is large. Nicely presented with clean lines, dark leather chairs and dark wood tables, white walls and vintage Belgian beer posters. There's an outdoor seating area too. The menu is quite large and is Belgian and English. We tried the lunch special and ordered the sausage and stoemp with beer gravy which was excellent and light, not greasy. My partner's burger was cooked medium well, exactly as ordered and was excellent. My tomato and mozarrella starter was also fresh and good. Looks like they take pride in their food here. read more

I've been visiting Brouge for a long time now, even before it was Brouge and was a Mexican place called Subterraneo. Went for dinner today, and as usual it was great. The menu offered a dozen Mussel and frites options, as well as a number of traditional Belgian dishes, accompanied by the obligatory stoemp (mixed mashed root veg). I went for the burger and was pleasantly surprised to have my preference confirmed: "Medium sir? Are you sure? Our medium is medium and not medium well like GBK up the road and most other places." Winner! Medium it is. Burger arrived and looked and tasted just right. I do admit to having a bit of order envy when my colleague's Steak, mushroom and belgian ale pie turned up! My only disappointment on this visit was that Mort Subite beer was unavailable! There are however no shortages of substitutes, the beer menu is extensive, even incuding champagne beers! As Cari mentions, Brouge is in a basement, it is however, tastefully decorated and has a great atmosphere! Friendly staff, highly recommended! read more

This place is great! Hard to find (it's below the street-level dentistry business next to All Bar One), but once you go down the stairs and get inside, the charm kicks right in. Lovely casual but nice atmosphere, really friendly service, fantastic beer list, and really good food. -Starters: Ham-wrapped figs stuffed with goats cheese were good... not amazing but good. The ribs were delicious. -Mains: The fish pot was amazing. Soooo much delicious fish in an incredible broth. The burger is quite good. The frites are pretty good. -Dessert: One of the best banoffees I've ever had. My friends got some waffles and said they were ok, but I about to burst so didn't try one myself. read more

Quite simply, Brouge is an absolute delight of a restaurant. Pleasing both high-class culinary snobs and average Joes in equal measure, this Belgian bistro hits all the spots. A typical menu of good, honest food is reasonably priced and in my experience, has always been very good. Of course, the moules mariniere are the restaurant's signature dish, served with a small bucket of fries - highly recommended. The décor is pleasing too; Brouge is located in a cellar underneath Richmond's bustling streets and has a spacious cellar feel to it. However, Bruge also has a huge appeal for real ale and continental beer enthusiasts, stocking everything from trappist specialities to fruit and blonde beers. One way to sample these hoppy delights is to order a 'taster bat', which for around £3 provides you with a bat containing 6 shot glasses of ales! A small bistro / bar area near the entrance services those wishing to come purely for the beer and is separate enough from the dining area as not to spoil its ambience. A well-priced, interesting and thoroughly enjoyable restaurant, all within a stone's throw of Richmond's riverside bars and pubs. Great stuff. read more

had a fabulous meal at the old goat last night, having been to Brouge in Richmond previously we thought we would try the old goat. It certainly didn't disappoint. With a fantastic menu and daily specials there really is something for everyone. The specialty fresh mussels really are scrummy too. All topped off by a fantastic range of Belgium beer. read more

I visit Brouge fairly frequently as I go with friends and clients alike. It's fourteen months since my last review and I have to say that the service is just as good as it has always been. The restaurant was redecorated a couple of months ago, and it looks really good, offering a "warmer", more welcoming feel, which is always good. At the same time, the menu got a makeover, and what is now offered is just as good, if not better than before. I really urge you to try some of the daily specials. The seafood risotto is superb, at least as far as I'm concerned. Brouge has my business, any day of the week. read more

Comfort food at its best. Menu fill of meats, stews, vegis and desserts to cap off the meal. You can get a wide veriety of beers to go with muscles and frites (classic belgian fare) or you can explore a wide range of enticing options. I had the grilled lamb chops. They were cooked a bit more than the pink that I ordered, but were still tender. They were a bit on the fatty side, but there was a perfectly carmelized crust on the meat. It also came out very hot. To start off this heavy meal, I tried the braised baby back ribs. I think they were braised in beer, but they were very tasty. The servers were super friendly and the environment was hopping but not too crowded. If you are going on a weekend night, make sure to book a table. The place gets full. Hubby and I went here for our anniversary dinner. I'm quite a foodie and I LOVED their menu! Steaks, mussels, burgers, fish all on offer plus more. Service was outstanding even though it was busy. The desserts were not anything special but fill up on the mains! read more

The food is very good and comes in big portions. The atmosphere is great and it's very cosy. The service however could be better.

I had dined at Bruge Richmond twice before and it was great. This time I decided to dine at the Twickenham one and wasn't impressed. Beer is excellent, Coffee is good, Food and sweets average. I don't know if it is the food quality or their kitchen standards, fact is that all 3 of us have upset stomachs after dining there and feel sick. UPDATE: The owner made every effort to find out the reason for that. I believe his explanation about the bad batch due to Christmas period. He has also made a great offer. read more

Went here last night and was surprised how busy it was for a Wednesday but I suppose it is coming up to Christmas. Anyway have to say thoroughly enjoyed it. I had the Lamb shank which was fantastic and my wife had the Mussels which she could not fault. The selection of Belgian beers is also appealing. I would recommend it and will give it another try. read more

Love, love, love everything about this place. One of the top 3 places in Richmond if you ask me. Although I'm very sad to see that this place is closed for renovations. A sign on the locked doors indicate that they will be reopening at an undisclosed date to be come another restaurant. Not sure why since what they were before was near perfect. Hope to see their doors open again soon and with the same excellent food and service. read more

Brouge is now renamed Pig's Ears with a completely different menu. The change is because they wanted to sell more 'world beers' and not be restricted to Belgian beers. With my two friends we entered with some apprehension because we liked Brouge and the mussels and the atmosphere. It was a sunny Sunday and we wondered if it would be too gloomy inside. It was and out came a mini-torch to read the menu which is completely different. Lots of snack-type dishes - no doubt to supplement the drinking of 'world beers'. We ordered two roast beef lunches and one fish and chips and we were not disappointed. The roast beef was plentiful and nicely pink, the tasty vegetables perfectly cooked and the roast potatoes, fluffy and crisp. Yorkshire puddings can be hard and tough but these were light and crispy. We thought the roast beef was the best we had eaten out and for £12.95, whilst not cheap, was reasonable for quality food. Would we go back? Yes we would for the Sunday roast but I'm not sure that we want to go to an 'ale house with food' . We think Brouge will be missed. Take a torch until the lighting is improved. read more
