My experience with Bruckmanns has been an awesome one. I attend conditioning classes there and sometimes stick around briefly while the kids/guys grapple. I dont participate in ju jitsu so i never was one to really bow at the matt, but anyone who fights with Bruckmanns always bows before they enter, even when it's a conditioning class. The only time i can see people not bowing is if they are, in fact, NOT a participant of ju jitsu, and they are there for Gord to train them, which is completely unrelated to BJJ. I have seen some pretty gnarly guys fight out of this place. There is absolutely no tolerance for people who come in with arrogant attitudes, and the people who come in with that attitude fall off pretty quickly, or they manage to forget their ego as soon as they enter the door. I believe Justin wears a buret when he first arrives to the gym, prior to ju jitsu starting, and before he changes into his gui. That has nothing to do with his capability of instruction. All of the kids in Bruckmanns give Justin full attention and respect and he gives them their undivided attention for the duration of the hour they are training for. The only reason Rihanna might be playing is because a co-ed conditioning class happens the hour prior to ju jitsu. Not because kids are fighting eachother to the umbrella song. Food for thought. I would reccomend anyones children come to Bruckmanns, and i often do. I reccommend Bruckmanns to all of my friends and family, and everyone has enjoyed the environment so far with absolutely no complaints. I especially reccomend women to go there to train, you will get equal attention and be in very capable hands. I trained at Bruckmann MMA for three years, prior to moving to the states. I was at class anywhere from two to four times a week. At no time did I ever overhear people talking about steroid use and it is definitely not promoted by the gym owners. People with egos either don't last long, or have their egos worked out of them on the mat. If Professor Bruckmann walked off the mat during class, then he had a good reason to do so. If the Professor has to leave the mat for whatever reason, then there are a lot of other experienced belts on to help out. When I was training, it was rare that there wasn't a professor or a coloured belt monitoring everyone. No one expected to be pampered either. If the professor was busy, we sucked it up and trained, which is what you could have done. I think that Bruckmann MMA does appear to have a hard exterior. It's not a traditional gym where everyone bows all the time and calls each other 'Sir', but it is an excellent place to train. Once you spend a little time there, you find that the exterior shell is just a way to make sure that people who are not serious about the sport don't train there. Bruckmann's is filled with good, Honourable people. They may play music during class and you might even hear some profanity on the mat; most people are mature enough to handle it. Bruckmann's is a family, but you have to earn your place at the table. Acceptance is a reward that comes from humility and hard work. I have been going to Bruckmann martial arts on and off for a couple of years and feel so privileged to attend a place like this. In my first year I lost 60 lbs! The world class athletes who attend always take the time to teach and roll with me. I feel very safe at BMA and I think it has to do with a culture of safety and respect. As a white belt I can learn anything I want (although leg submissions and standing are usually reserved for blue belts and above) which is great for me!! The favourite thing I am learning is how to be gentle. When someone is using all there strength and you can relax and use it to help you is truly the mark of something special. I felt so proud a couple of month ago when I did not tap out to this massive man who knew what he was doing. A true mark of the spirit and success of BMA is the participation of women and children. I believe that any industry which male dominated, really stands out when there is a demographic shift. The first post is well off the mark. I will refrain from making it an ad hominem attack about that individual, but will say that his overall experience with Bruckmann Martial Arts (and Justin Bruckmann himself) is unfounded. The aforementioned gym has a great reputation for producing and developing some incredible students. We (I myself have trained at the particular gym for almost 7 years) have a reputation as a gym of producing some incredible competitors and some incredibly humble individuals. Furthermore, to know the 'jiu jitsu scene' in Southern Ontario (the first post tells me that that individual may not be too familiar with it) is to know that Justin Bruckmann has been instrumental in the growth, and education of this sport throughout the province. If you're looking to break boards, perform flawless Katas, or the death touch, you should probably look elsewhere. I often look and plan to travel 4 hours to train at Bruckmann's. I love the affiliation we have through them and the high level of instruction through the various instructors and champions the club produces. Being a BJJ champion myself I am always taken back at Justin dedication to helping me improve everytime I attend his club. I am extermely grateful that I get the chance to work with him and his instructors. The family and friendships I have built through my new found lineage is one that I cherish. I am truely blessed that my journey in BJJ had led me down this path. I see nothing but wonderful opportunities lying ahead of me in my athletic career and accomplishing some serious goals that I lay before me. But this cannot be done without him and his school as a peice of that team I have to work with! And I wouldn't have it any other way! I went to Bruckmanns on 3 or 4 times. Some good some bad. At the end of the day they were SUPER rude to me outside of the gym and some roid rage black guy blew up in my face yelling like and idiot when I called Justin to ask him what the guys problem was and to say sorry it took place in his place. Justin defended his idiot friend and insulted me in a E-mail. Real Mature for a 40 year old man to make fun of people in emails. It was not much of a work out I've been to way better BJJ school then Bruckmanns, But it has great hours and a huge group of wanna be MMA guys. On a side note I found hate mail on my facebook in my other folder. My martial arts journey has spanned most of my life. I've trained at many different dojo's (most very traditional) as well as different styles. NOTHING!!! has even come close to what I've personally achieved at Bruckmanns Martial Arts! I have only been here for about 3 yrs and would struggle to find a dojo that offers all that Bruckmanns has to offer. All the instructors, whether its Professor Bruckmann or another student sharing their wealth with the class are all professional and offer first class lessons. I've never been part of a club with so much comrade and support for one another. Young or old; if your looking to learn, laugh, be part of a team and part of a lifestyle, then Bruckmann Martial Arts is the only place you need to be! I have been training with Professor Bruckmann for five years. He is a class individual and runs a top quality club. For example, in clubs I have attended in the past gradings are a money making endeavour. Professor Bruckmann does not charge for gradings. Instead he encourages people to bring in food items to donate to the food bank. After every grading a truckload of food is generated. In addition he buys the belts! Each grading costs him $1000. The students at the club are also quality people. This is a goon free environment. All the higher belts are very open and help everyone improve. I believe Ju Jitsu is a human filter, those that can't hack it find excuses why they won't continue. Usually because their delicate ego can't handle the years of beatings it takes to become good. Forget the first review as I can honestly say without a doubt that absolutely nothing he said was true. Bruckmann MMA makes you feel welcome from the first minute you walk in the doors. Great atmosphere for kids, teens and adults of any age. Justin and his instructors never talk down to their students and are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure that you benefit greatly from your training experience. There's MMA clubs and then there's Bruckmann MMA. This guy and his instructors have walked the walk as professional MMA fighters so I don't think you will find anyone more credible to teach you proven techniques. I train at Bruckmann Martial Arts and want to let everyone know that it's an amazing club. The comradely between members is apparent as soon as you walk through the door. Need proof.. come to a class and try it yourself, or watch any member of our team at a tournament. Everyone is incredibly supportive. Just left my first class at Bruckmann's and I'm hooked! Justin welcomed me, made me feel comfortable and gave me guidance when I needed it. One of the students, Jackie, who's been there for 6 years and knew what was up, partnered up with me and really walked me through the technique. Bruckmanns is a very known club in the bjj community. Anybody who knows anything about bjj is that it is very hard discipline to get good at, and takes time and practice...LOTS!!!
