We booked a 1:30 time for lunch and had a great table outside on the shady patio on an uncharacteristically warm (88 degrees!) summer day. The menu features lots of choices from burgers to shareable platters. We opted for a cheese platter with local l, some chili roasted almonds and the baked Bree. It was the perfect lunch. We also enjoyed a glass of the Sauvignon blanc and the sparkling rose with the meal. Following the meal, we stepped up to the tasting area ($5 pp-free with a bottle purchase) and sampled the entirety of their selection from unplanned Rose (last year's fires tainted the skin on the Pinot noir so the winemaker made a switch-delicious) to Sauvignon blanc, Riesling and Pinot noir. Wines were nice quality. While this place is on the bus tour circuit, they kept the larger groups segregated in the back of the large restaurant so we weren't at all impacted. It's worth the drive for the lunch quality alone and a peaceful and relaxing spot.

There's a lot of things to peruse once you're inside; cheese, fresh breads made on site (sourdough bread for $7.50 AUD), honey, muesli, granola, sauces, jams, oils and more. Beers are on tap (7 types) with a guest tap (Bruny Island Cider when we went). You can get a tasting paddle ($12.00 AUD) which lets you try four pre-picked flavours. For non drinkers, there's coffee and shakes. The chalkboard menu outside had about half a dozen options; platter, ploughman's lunch, oven baked otto, sourdough pizza, sourdough croque monsier, toastie and sourdough fruit toast. Saw a platter and pizza come out to a table that looked scrumptious. - Cheese tasting flight ($5.00 AUD) - you get to sample four types; tom (semi-hard), george (semi-hard), saint (classic Camembert) and 1792 (washed rind). All were tasty but our favourite was the 1792. It was aged on aromatic Huon Pine boards. Another fun spot to grab drinks and enjoy good food. You could easily spend a few hours wining and dining here.

When you went inside it was enormous though. I got a good vibe from here, the interesting antiques and art, the fermented veggies and preserves for sale and lovely staff. Between us we tried the beef short rib with veggies and horseradish sauce (best, ever!), the fish fingers and chips with a pea smash (that is, salmon fish fingers), a rigatoni ragu and the chicken with salsa verde. It's because Art of Tea has a wonderful range of loose leaf teas all blended here in Tasmania. They can be found on a Saturday at the famed Salamanca Market, they can be found in numerous stores across the state, or they can be found out here at their warehouse and little office. It's a little way out of town but for the locals it can be a safer trek than braving the market (most of us leave that for the tourists). If you're interested in tea and love the ritual of loose leaf, then definitely consider picking up a box (or two, or three, or half a dozen) of Art of Tea. I've enjoyed all the blends I've tried so far but particularly like the Tassie-focused blends like Mt Wellington blend, Salamanca blend and Tassie Devil tea. (I think you can even get these three in a gift pack together from the market, for obvious touristy reasons!) I'm not sure if they taste great because they're so special or if there was a particular focus on making these ones taste the BEST because we're all Tassie Proud down here, but in any case, HOORAY. If you're a regular, make sure you ask for a loyalty card, where you can actually get every 10th box free!
