    Iowa Class!

Virtual painting!? Yes, please. Virtual painting a first grader can do? Heck, yes! My seven year old's elementary school organized an at-home painting event with Brush and Barrel. It was perfection! I found the event on their site. Paid online. And then a few days prior to the Saturday morning event, all the materials needed were delivered on our doorstep. Canvas, Paint, Brushes, Sponges, Paper Towels-- EVERYTHING! I LOVE (as a parent) that all the prep was basically done for me. Cora was so excited to paint her schools mascot-- a bulldog named Norman! This first grader was able to follow along, no problem-- due to excellent instructions by the owner, Stevie. (And didn't the painting end up so darn cute!?) Kuddos to Borlaug Elementary School for facilitating this. Brush and Barrel thank you for putting on such a wonderful weekend event. Stevie, you rock! Brush and Barrel offers a lot of virtual painting events. For both adults and kids! Check out their site.

What a fun thing to do! I booked a class to paint an Iowa Sunset as a date night with my partner. We had such an wonderful time :) Our AMAZING instructor Stevie was warm, welcoming, did a fantastic job making sure everyone was up to speed before moving on and gave tons of tips to accomplish our paintings! She also played good music to give a chill vibe. They have a nice selection of wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages. There were a couple of breaks where you had time to relax/refresh your beverage/use the restroom. Everything is set up and ready to go! The class is small enough, you're able to get one on one attention if you fall behind and this is fun for people of all skills levels. The steps are easy to follow and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Stevie assured us there are no mistakes. Sounds like they have events specific to Date Night where you create complementary paintings(two different paintings that go together). They also offer events! Highly recommend and will definitely be back.

The best "I'd rather stay inside where it's warm" activity!! If you're looking for a date night, paint! If you're looking for a family friendly activity, paint! If you're looking for a night out with the girls paint! Even if you want to do something by yourself, PAINT! My family came to visit (all the way from Las Vegas!) and we just couldn't figure out a fun activity to do together to get us out of the house. I came across Brush & Barrel and decided to give it a go! It was $20 per person online. I believe it's more if you're a walk-in. Our class was about two hours long. Let me just say, we had SO MUCH FUN! None of us are painters, nor are we all that gifted in anything that requires "creativity". BUT, we were able to follow along in class while still being creative! We all left with a different (but similar) piece of art. In fact, it inspired us to have a paint night on New Year's Day! It was such a fun way to start off the year! There was so much included with our paint class. The canvas, paint, brushes, and easel were all set up when we arrived. We were provided an apron as wells as snacks and juice boxes. Wine and beer were available for purchase. The ladies working day were so great! They gave advice, made sure people felt good about what they had going on in front of them, and were so patient with their step-by-step instructions. I am already planning on going back for a date night. Oh, they also do private events! I have one coming up in April at work and you better believe I will be there. I highly recommend trying your hand at painting! Maybe it can be your New Years resolution for 2020 ;)

This place is sooooo underated! My GF and I came here for 'date night' and I was a little iffy because it cost $35 but if you do the math it way cheaper than painting at home Canvas: ~$10 1 beer: ~$5 paint 6 colors × $4 each =~$24 Brushes: ~$2 Lesson from an instructor for two hours: priceless! Avid painter or not, this is a great place to go to!

    Date night! Bicycling in Iowa.

This is my favorite date night spot! I can't explain to you how much fun it is to drink wine and paint while doing it with someone you cherish. I've been a couple of times and I've enjoyed each visit. I usually bring boxed wine because the class can be rather long for just a small 750ml wine bottle. The instructors are awesome and they make you feel like Picasso even when you're really bad at it. It's a great time and you won't be disappointed!

My first painting ever. The teacher was very welcoming and engaging. Loved this place!

I was visiting town from New York City, and was looking for a unique and new experience to try out out with my best friend. We found a Groupon for this place and I absolutely loved it. It was a lot of fun, and very relaxing. The owner is super friendly, and takes the time to answer any questions. We started the evening with a complimentary wine tasting and small snacks like cupcakes and chocolates. After we decided what wine we wanted for our full serving we sat down and started painting. Great and very fun experience. Definitely recommend! Must do in Iowa City. And when you go home you can take your painting with you and proudly display it somewhere. :)

We used their design, floral, and day-of coordination services. The design service was amazing. They got to know us as a couple, got to know our vibe, and then created a tailored design plan that truly incorporated every element we wanted and some that we didn't even know were possible! They stayed within our budget and did not pressure us to spend more. We were able to rent all of our needed items from them and used them for signage. We also paid for the set-up and tear-down services so felt incredibly stress free with the design of the wedding day. The floral was wrapped up in the design process and was also effortless. They gave us a full plan of which florals would be used for our bouquets and arrangements. On the day-of the flowers were beautiful and just as described. The day-of coordination was icing on the cake. Our coordinator, Kelli, was present for all of our design/planning meetings so it felt like she knew our wedding when planning the schedule. She was available to talk through all the details of our schedule and very communicative leading up to the wedding. On the day of my wedding I felt so calm knowing that the set up and coordination was in capable hands. I was able to focus on being in the moment and enjoy the whole day. They made clean-up seamless. Was the best use of money. Would do 100 times over!! Recommend Unique Events endlessly!

We worked with Travis and the Unique Events team for almost a year while planning our summer…read morewedding in the Quad Cities. We have nothing but praise for their work and would not hesitate to recommend UE's services to others planning a special event. We elected to work with Unique Events after a disappointing experience with another event planning group whose fee structure and policies were ambiguous, at best. From the outset, Travis and his team of event designers were responsive to our questions and took our interests, tastes, and goals for the wedding into consideration. UE worked within our budget to design and execute a truly outstanding event that felt personal, elegant, and seamless. A number of the vendors and countless guests have reached out to us with compliments for UE's exceptional service and design work. My partner and I planned the wedding from out of state, and therefore assigned a lot of responsibility to UE to manage not only their own design elements (incl. ceremony & reception decor, lighting, floral, linens, and numerous rentals) but also to oversee the "day-of" operations of eight other vendors. Throughout the planning process, Travis Newell's communication with us was prompt, clear, and courteous. He went above and beyond to ensure that the details we discussed were accounted for in revised event proposals and came prepared with questions and ideas to all of our conversations. He and the day-of coordinators even went so far as to meet with me (and one of the other vendors) at the venue three weeks before the wedding for a detailed walk through of the design and event timeline. The event coordinators, Ashley and Hannah, also provided exceptional service on the day-of, working tirelessly from 7am through midnight to liaise with vendors, party members and guests, and to attend to issues that arose. We were deeply impressed with their attentiveness and demonstrated capacity. Thank you so much, Unique Events! We couldn't have done it without you.

Nestled right on the Pentacrest of The University of Iowa campus, we…read morereally do have an amazing resource in our own backyard (for those of us who live in the Eastern Iowa corridor area, at least). The museum hasn't changed much since I last visited 10+ years ago, but that's okay. Rusty the Sloth and the polar bear in the gift shop are staples. Macbride Hall houses the Department of Anthropology at U of I. Wouldn't it be cool to see these artifacts every day as a student? The pair of lions in Mammal Hall were placed in an enclosed case in 202 (previously not enclosed) and a nice mural was painted behind them. From what I could tell, that's the most recent update to one of the museum's exhibits. Museum is free, but a donation is suggested. Please don't skip the donation box located near the guestbook in the gift shop. As indicated in a previous review, some of the exhibits have become quite 'well-loved.' Interactive features no longer work, particularly in the Hall of Birds. Mammal Hall is my most favorite, but there's so much to learn from each area of the museum. The museum covers 3 floors of Macbride Hall. Take the stairs and work those quads! Elevator available as well. Due to the summer season museum hours are a little different, so I'd call ahead or check the website for details. Parking during the summer on the street is easy to find. $1.50/hour. Highly recommend!
