This place is a great place to watch a movie. The seats are much better than the stadium seats they used to have. Sound of the movie is fine and picture of the movies are decent quality, but I recommend avoiding getting any concessions except maybe their popcorn and sodas. I had purchased a bag of candy and had ate a couple before I checked the date on it and realized it was expired. They, thankfully, offered me a different candy or refund but couldn't replace the original candy because the rest had expired, I ended up taking a different choice of candy. What bothers me most about this is they believe the date was close enough and the candy was still good and I'm assuming they'll be continuing to distribute these expired bags of candy. To sum this up, check the date on your candy before they sell it to you because they will not care if it's expired or not. read more

A discount theater that feels like an expensive one Collins Road theater has been at its location for decades. They know the movie business and they offer a great service at a discount. For two tickets, popcorn and drinks, you will save around $20 in comparison to the non-discount theater in town. The popcorn is good and you get to put the butter on yourself (which is also real butter). They also offer various flavor powders, such as garlic, which you can sprinkle on your popcorn, if so desired. All the concessions are sold at a discount in comparison to other theatres. A box of candy, for example, is $2 or $3. They also make their own carmel corn which is very good. Refills on pop and popcorn are $1. They also offer a lot of hot food, like hot dogs and nachos. read more

It's nice that Cedar Rapids has a second run theater. It's nice that Cedar Rapids has an independent film festival. It's nice that they have real butter. It's nice that their prices are at least affordable. What's not nice, their chairs. These movie theater 'chairs' are awful. Went to go catch Avatar 3d. Went to the restroom. No toilet was clean. There were number 1s and 2s in every toilet. I came out to my boyfriend still trying to get our tickets. The manager was extremely rude. My boyfriend paid for both of our tickets before hand. The theatres ticket machine was messed up and printed 26 tickets instead of only 2 for us. The manager said something was fishy with my boyfriends purchase. They started accusing us of doing something weird and purchasing too many tickets. After further investigation, they realized it was the machines fault and apologized. Terrible and rude service. read more

Known as the "cheap movie theater" at our house with "cheap" being a good thing! Collins Road Theater is the cheapest theater in town for both new movies and concessions! I went last night to an evening showing of Aladdin, $8.50 for my ticket, $3.50 for my small popcorn, and $2.50 for my bottled water = less than $15 to go to the movies! Other theaters in town would be over $20!! Another perk is this theater lets you put REAL butter on your popcorn and offers various salt flavors so one can customize their popcorn to their liking. The theater is clean, and I love that the seats are more of a faux leather - easy to clean and in general feels cleaner than the typical cloth seats. I do feel the lobby could use some updating - it has been the same since I can remember... modernize it! read more

This place is awesome. It's a second run theater, so the prices are really low. The prices on the concessions are also pretty low, which is a welcome relief from the insanely expensive concessions at the first run theaters in the area. They also do something crazy that I've never seen anywhere: they let you add butter to your own popcorn. They hand you your bucket, you carry it over to a dispenser, and you add as much or as little as you want. You can also pick between a low cholesterol "buttery topping" or actual butter (again, not something I've seen in a movie theater since I can remember). The theater is run (and probably owned) by a guy named Bruce who occasionally introduces the movies with a give-away thing where he hands out vouchers for free popcorn to randomly selected patrons. His little pre-movie presentation makes it obvious that he loves running the theater, which makes you feel good about supporting it. The final amazing thing is that they don't show you ads mixed in with the trailers. As of 2015, the first run theaters in the area have a bloated, 22-minute preview screening that includes ads that run before the trailers. Not here. They have a slide show with some ads going before the lights go down, but it's not like the Screenvision ads that play everywhere else. The downside is that these aren't huge, fancy theaters. No stadium seating, no massive screens, no crazy sound systems. Everything is totally acceptable, but it's not like going to a first run theater with a gigantic screen and really loud sound. They did upgrade to DLP digital projectors, and they installed new seats, so it's not like you'll be walking into some decrepit screening room. When you factor in the value, the projection and sound quality are great. You should be warned that bringing in outside food is strictly prohibited. It's not like a regular theater where you can basically sneak in anything you want. They have employees that walk through the movie periodically to make sure nobody has brought in anything. If this bugs you, get over it. You're paying almost half what you would at a first run theater, and you have the option to buy inexpensive concessions. Deal with it. Overall, this is an awesome place. Over the years, I've seen so many movies that I would have never seen otherwise. It's hardly worth taking a chance on a movie if you're going to pay $10 for a ticket and $20 for popcorn, but if you spend less than half that, you have the freedom to try movies that you're unsure about. It's a quality operation. Check it out. Become a regular. Keep cool theaters like this going. read more

This is the best theater in town. Let me tell you why: Independently owned AND operated. That's right. It means that there is a person running the theater and not some faceless corporation that thinks you're a number to squeeze dollars out of. They're one of us and if I know anything about theaters (I do, just a little) they aren't doing this to get rich, they're doing it because they love it. That goes a long way for me. The fact that they host local film festivals is KILLER. This theater isn't like other theaters, I think it's hard for people who are too dumb to see the difference to realize that. They're serious about rules. If I'm paying money to go see a movie, I do not want to be blinded by the bright blue light of your stupid cell phone during the movie. It makes me want to throw things at you. The fact that these guys will kick you out for taking out a cell phone is brilliant. Let's try to preserve what little is left of the movie-going experience. I really appreciate a movie theater that is upfront about the fact that have rules and expect you to follow them. As for the not bringing food in? What's the problem? These guys have the cheapest concessions in town AND they are super upfront about the fact that they're as inexpensive as they can make them but these guys gotta keep the lights on! The theater doesn't run itself. If you sneak food in to a big chain theater, that's one thing, I guess, but these guys are super upfront about their policies and super upfront about their pricing. I also enjoy their little talk at the beginning of the film. Y'know who else does that? REALLY nice theaters that are full of people who love movies and cater to people who love movies. I would have to echo the previous reviews about the great admission prices, great concession stand prices, the dollar refills and the give-aways. I will say that the seats do sit really low and aren't that comfortable. If you have been to the Palace Theater in Vinton, Iowa you know that cheap price can include a top rate seat! Of course the Palace also had the benefit of conducting a capital campaign to raise money for those seats. The Palace is staffed by volunteers and this also helps keep the price down. They stopped running the KGAN TV adverts. And when I go to any other theater, they run advertisements continuously before the movie. And they repeat, and they are EXTREMELY ANNOYING. But CRT only shows a slide show, I don't find them annoying, and after attending a few shows at e.g. Markus I can't go back to watch. I hope CRT stays in business with its change to first run movies, I was always fine with watching a 2nd/delayed movie. read more

Horrible evening. They had two workers stationed in the back of the theater running up and down the isle threatening parents to keep their kids quiet. There were no kids causing a scene except the workers. And to top it off, it was a Disney movie -The Incredibles, you have to understand that their may be a bit of kid noise. My daughter left with our grand daughter after she was threatened because they stepped out on n their own to change a diaper. Not because of noise. I will never take my family back there. read more

Locally owned theater that makes a real effort to have fun, affordable entertainment. It's cleaner, less expensive every day of the week than the other movie theaters in town, and has employees that actually are NICE and greet you (pretty unheard of anymore). They do weekly specials ($4 Tuesdays) right now, do kids specials in the summer, do cool special showings, and the concessions are reasonably priced so you can treat the family without spending a small fortune. Definitely could have done without Charlie's cringeworthy 10 minute monologue and raffle before the show. Food was ok. Movie audio/visual quality was good. Cleanliness of the theater sucked but that is to be expected at every theater. "Free" movies during the summer mornings, CR Indie Film Festival, and second run movies with updated seating. Great theatre, great prices, great staff. Always friendly, and always helpful. Delicious butter on huge popcorn, and $1 refills on drinks and popcorn! Sometimes we just get the popcorn on the way home, as a treat. Our first choice for movies in the CR area. Wait six weeks and check out all of your movies here! I see that someone wrote about them never coming back because of the Barney Fife mentality by the ushers. Give me a break. The ushers come through maybe twice in a movie, and they are never obtrusive, unless someone is doing something that ALL movie theatres are to enforce, for the enjoyment of all. If you think their behavior is oppressive, then please take your business elsewhere. I for one do not want people on their phones, or bringing other "beverages" into the theatre. A bit run down. The chairs are awful but you know what? You can't beat their prices, both at the ticket counter and the concession stand. Not to mention its the only theater I have ever been to in the last five years or so who don't play TV commercials before the movie. They also host the annual Cedar Rapids Film Festival. If you have never been there, I urge you to give it a try. I know it can be surprising but Iowa has a lot of talented independent filmmakers and a budding film industry. The price for this is also excellent. The film festival lasts for a few days but you can buy passes for just one session, a single day or the entire festival. A lot of skilled and talented filmmakers from the area show there work there and they always have a nice variety. Never in my life have I seen a local movie theater so supportive of the local film-making community. Seriously, go check it out. Its usually sometime in April. read more

I have always enjoyed going there. But last time I went, the manager was basically screaming at one of his employees. I don't think they did anything wrong, which made it even more upsetting. I think she was just asking a question and he started screaming. Sorry, no one wants to see or hear anything like that when you take the time and money to visit a business. read more

We always have a good experience. Unlike other value theaters I have seen, they DO spend money to update the facility, such as seating and sound. The prices are very fair on both the films and the concessions, and, and the popcorn is for sure the best in town. I love this place! Cheap tickets that are half priced and don't drain my wallet, real butter (my friend who works at Wehrenberg says they use flavored coconut oil), and great customer service. Always helpful and there to serve the customer, and employees who are enthusiastic about their jobs. And, an added bonus, sometimes on weekend shows the owner/manager or an assistant manager raffles away free popcorn, at an already cheap theater. Sure, you have to wait a little longer to see the movie you want and the seats are of an undesirable degree of comfort, but if that's what keeps you from coming to a theater with half-priced tickets, real butter, and exemplary customer service, you're missing out. This place may not be as glorious as Galaxy and movies aren't shown here during their initial release date. But, it's still the cleanest, friendliest, and most down-to-earth theater in town. You can tell they care about the customer, not what's in the customer's wallet. Oh, I almost forgot, in the summer, free kid's movies! How awesome is that? There are clowns making balloon animals, cops talking about safety, and people dressed up as circus employees for free!!! read more

Best Theatre in the Cedar Rapids area- A+++ for reasonably priced tickets, food and drinks. Staff is great with the added fun of winning free popcorn or sodas from ticket stub on Friday and Saturday nights. We wait for the movies to come to Collins- simply because we like it better. One night we came and the projector was dis-functional for about 10 minutes -for our inconvenience everyone received a free popcorn coupon- very generous and want to earn your patronage. read more

They have the best prices on tickets, candy, pop, water, and popcorn in town! They have real butter and great popcorn seasonings. They show movies for all ages with all ratings. The staff is very kind and friendly. It may not be super big and fancy, but that's sort of what people love about it. Not all the movies are showed here, and they come to this theater after they go to the more expensive theaters, but it is worth the great prices! There also aren't many annoying adds, and they don't show commercials during the previews. I love this theater! read more
