The cabins have a kitchenette, if you prefer to prepare your meals. The rooms are good-sized, with mini-fridge, microwave, coffeemaker and flat screen TV. The bathroom is small but adequate and hot water is plentiful. Heat is supplied via baseboard and there's no A/C but a desktop fan is provided. The WiFi is robust with 2.4 and 5G available, and it's on a password-protected VPN (there's not much wireless elsewhere, so it's nice to have it here). Rates are fair and there's a large common room inside and a covered deck out back. Under the current restrictions there's no food service, but a cafe is two doors down the street (see separate review for the Dockside Cafe) and the local Moose lodge is across the street. When you're on POW Island and need a place to stay, look no further than the Sunnahae Hotel. You'll be glad you did!

After many flight delays, I was tired and frustrated by the time I arrived at the airport. I didnt…read morehave a hotel planned or a place to stay already set up. A kind local lady recommended me this place and called the owner directly to make sure that I had a room available to stay for the night. Ken, the owner was extremely hospitable! The house was super easy to find, follow all the signs at the Klawock airport to Craig and make a left on East Hamilton Rd when you get into Craig. Go for 2 minutes and you will see it on your left. When you walk in, the staircase to the rooms are directly on the right. My room had its own private bathroom and the bathtub was a jacuzzi jet tub. Everything was very clean and the bed was super comfortable. I had an excellent 2 nights of sleep. My room also had its own private patio with a small table and 2 chairs. Outside of the rooms there is a little snack area with coffee, tea, fridge, microwave, and chips. Downstairs there is a common living room area with comfy couches, big screen tv, movies, and board games. In the morning, Ken provides breakfast items such as oatmeal, fruit, bread varieties, cereal, milk, hot chocolate, etc. You can make coffee with the keurig and there are hot tea choices as well. My ultimate favorite part of the entire place is the back patio. The view is breathtakingly amazing. Its right on the water and watching the sunrise with my cup of coffee and oatmeal was the best way to start my day. I plan on coming back during the summer for more Alaska fun, and this would definitely be the place I would stay!

What I loved most about this is I got to watch them LIVE this over the next week. They do no just say this for marketing purposes. It was my first time at Fireweed Lodge, but immediately felt like I was staying with long-time family friends. It's abundantly clear that they, and the entire staff, are genuine, good-hearted, salt-of-the-earth folks who want you to have a great time (and get on a lot of fish). I was on Adam's boat all 3 days I was there and couldn't have been happier. Adam knows his stuff and continually made game-time decisions that paid off (also, as an added bonus, he's hilarious which comes in handy when the bite slows down from time to time). Summed up, everything you could possibly ask for in a Captain. Limits of Coho and Halibut every day with some healthy Kings on a couple of days (which is not guaranteed in late August, when we went). Came home with about 75 lbs of meat for each person! I'll be booking a trip at Fireweed again, no question about that. The only thing I'll do differently is buy a bigger freezer before I go. We planned a trip in early September this year for a self guided fishing trip. We thoroughly…read moreenjoyed every minute of it! The fishing that week was fantastic! Our first day out we chartered a halibut trip with Captain Jim. While he tried his best, we couldn't seem to get too many on the boat. That's fishing! He was a great guy and regardless of the number of halibut we caught (3 chickens), it was a great day on the water! We talked to Jim throughout the week and they did have some better days catching some good sized fish. The next 3 days we spent on the 23' upgraded boat fishing for salmon and let me tell you, it was phenomenal! Jason and Trish led us to some of the places that usually catch fish and none of them disappointed! We caught some of the biggest silver salmon I've seen! They were some bruisers. We even spent one day rock fish and halibut fishing. We know very little about this but managed to stumble on a good little hole. 4 halibut and 7 rockfish later, we were headed back to camp. SOOOO much fun! The crab pots were slow to catch but we still managed to eat 5 of those tasty little critters! It was an absolutely extraordinary trip! One we would definitely do again in a heartbeat! We know that fishing is not always "hot" as we fish back home a lot, but we hit it just right! Adventure Alaska does a fantastic job as is evident by all the return clientele we met at the lodge. The trout lodge was great as it fit 5 of us perfectly. The hot tub and pool table was a welcome distraction after a long day of fishing. The fillet table was very well setup. Everyone was very willing to offer advice and we also met some great guests! I go to alaska at least once a year to fish and this is by far my favorite trip! If you are looking for a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of normal life and are willing to do most everything yourself then this is the place! If you want to see and understand a real Alaskan community, ask Nick to show you Klawock. It was…read morethe most rewarding experience of our cruise. You might drive through and think it's a tiny town with not much there, in the middle of an incredibly beautiful wilderness. But Klawock is a Tlingit community. The tribe has chosen to control its own development. Unlike all those tourist-ready ports, it's still close to its heritage. So get Nick to show it to you; he's the mayor and tribal president. Klawock started hosting cruise ships in 2024 with 6 calls. Two years later they're getting 53. But except for a good selection of quality souvenirs in the tent that serves as the cruise terminal, the closest tourist shop is 6 miles up the road in Craig. Klawock isn't spoiled yet and I hope it stays that way. We had seen totem poles in other ports. Walking the National Historical Park trail in Sitka, we started to appreciate what some of the poles mean and the roles they played in historic Tlingit life. (Tip: Download the NPS app.) But Nick showed us totem poles as part of a living community. One pole is dedicated to missing indigenous women. Another honors residents who served in the military. The poles were carved locally and raised by hand by the whole community. One, a century old, was stolen away by a Hollywood star. No spoiler here; you'll have to hear the story from Nick. But we saw it and met the master carver who's giving it a new life by creating a sturdy duplicate for outdoor display. You won't find this stuff in the other cruise ports. And you won't find anyone better to show you Klawock than Nick.
