Buckhead Jiu-Jitsu is a great place! I joined Buckhead Jiu-Jitsu four years ago with very little martial arts experience and was an unhealthy 200 pounds. Through Fit45 and Jiu0Jitsu classes I have lost 45 pounds and have been the healthiest I have ever been. Sam Joseph is the head instructor and a world class athlete. He breaks down techniques piece by piece to ensure that we understand why we are doing things instead of just doing through the motions. Sam is also very passionate and very outgoing. You can tell that he loves the sport and his students. The gym overall has a very friendly and open environment. People bring their families in all the time to watch or participate themselves. You can also see teammates helping each other out before, between, and after classes. There are a number of students that compete regularly and get medals but no one is pressured to compete. This is the best part; you can be a hobbyist, someone looking to stay in shape, or a competitor, there's something for everyone! In addition, we have various random team outings throughout the year: movie viewings, UFC watch parties, or just eating at chipotle after a hard day of training. I started Bjj in college (so like ~10 years ago) but my life/career/laziness always got in the way. In that time I've experienced ALOT of different gyms (I've lived in 4 diff cities plus I travel a lot). Between semi/permanent and travel drop-ins I've been to 9 gyms and as you'd expect they vary greatly. A lot of them are good spots but Buckhead Jiu-Jitsu and in particular Sam (our beloved leader) is unequivocally the best. It's the only reason why i still train (and keep planning to). The atmosphere is super welcoming. It's not militaristic like some gyms, there's no egos (lol and the rolling music is great/hilarious). Sam is just super like-able and funny ....you know he just loves his students (and they in return). The skill levels are diverse too ...lots of higher belts willing to teach you. I've known Sam for over 15 years. Wonderful energy and enthusiasm. I can't imagine anyone who I'd rather study martial arts with!

I feel so fortunate to have joined this gym because it has truly changed my lifestyle. Of course in a good way. I am one of the smallest girl in the gym (5.1 ft, about 100 lbs) and I never had any interest in martial arts, I always thought it was too violent. But I really enjoy training here for so many reasons. The head instructor Sam is an awesome guy that makes me feel welcome every time in the class, takes good care of newbies including women, makes sure a safe environment for everyone and keeps encouraging to challenge yourself in a fun way. All my teammates are awesome. Women are normally about 20% of the class, but while guys are gentle not to hurt you, they still keep pushing you to get better. I love Atlanta and the biggest reason is Buckhead Jiu Jitsu. read more

I really wish I could give this place more than 5 stars. I received my brown belt in South Africa, I was at an amazing gym there that I trained at for many years. But between my relocation to the U.S and starting a new job, life got busy and before I knew it, 2 years had passed and I was easily 20 lbs. overweight. I felt sluggish, soft, slow and worse of all I was afraid to get back on the mat. Deep down I still loved BJJ, but previous training experiences had me disheartened, it just wasn't fun getting smashed by bigger stronger guys and having to deal with just the general chaos at certain gyms and the dealing with "I'm the big dawg here" mentality. But I decided to give BJJ another chance and Buckhead Jiu-Jitsu was around the corner from me. Sam (head coach) was super responsive, it took less than a few hours between my inquiry to rolling on the mat. The class was focused and well planned, there's a progression to everything he taught and he put a heavy emphasis on making sure that we understood why things worked and how it fits into an overall game. Personally, I find that's the best way to learn, understanding how the technique works and why it works, this enabled me to integrate the technique into my game quickly and it allowed me to modify it for my body type. Questions were encouraged, classmates, coaches were friendly and willing to share. There's a real team spirit here, a sense of community, the culture of supporting each other is so apparent you can feel it on day one. Most importantly, I felt safe, I knew I wasn't going to get my arm ripped off by some idiot. But at the same time, the workout and rolling remained challenging. I really enjoyed the training on my first day back and I was already looking forward to training again. So I actually signed up on the first day I was there. It's been 2 years since that day. I feel my Jiu-Jitsu has grown and changed a lot since then, I've also gotten into better shape. I've become really good friends with a lot of classmates and coaches. I continue to look forward to going to training each day. It was my absolute fortune to have relocated to Atlanta and to have landed on the doorsteps of Buckhead Jiu-Jitsu. If I didn't stumble upon Buckhead Jit-Jitsu, Sam, and all the amazing coaches here, I would have most probably never picked up Jiu-Jitsu again. Never have I been to another gym that has multiple black and brown belt coaches that are so technically skilled, approachable, likable as people, willing to share at the same time and willing to roll with us each and every day. This is an amazing gym! The head coach really cares about the members and everyone there is really nice. That being said everyone there performs at a high level so be prepared for a good competitive spar. If you're new to the sport there are several opportunities to attend beginner classes and ease your way into it. Overall love this place and grateful to be a part of it! read more

I have always wanted to learn some form of martial art and I have found what I have learned very useful...not that I have had to actually use it in real life yet :). I have been a member at Buckhead Jiu Jitsu for a little over a year now. From the moment I stepped on the mat I knew that this is where I wanted to be. The energy and family atmosphere is very present at the gym. Definitely starts from the owner and head instructor, 2nd degree black belt and four time Pan American champion, Samuel Joseph.
