Great beach for those not wanting to deal with trekking over the bridge and through the tunnel to Va Beach. Sure, it's a small city beach and there isn't a whole lot going on. But, it's clean, there's enough space to spread out, the people are nice, and you don't have to fight traffic to get there. Also, while I was there two food trucks were pulled up near the pier - bonus! Although, I noticed a lot of folks bringing their own food and drinks. So grab your beach chair, sunscreen, and music or a book - this is the place to veg out while getting some vitamin D. Cheers and happy beaching! read more

A bit of advice, as you walk north, pay attention to the "Private Property" signs. Owners of these homes own all the way to the "mean low tide" line. If you park your blanket anywhere above the mean low tide line, you are trespassing, and quite likely will be informed of this (most often quite politely) that you are doing so. Don't ask me how I know. ;-) Also, this means that during high tide one needs to be IN the water to not be trespassing. That's not to say you can't walk by, just stay close to the water line, and keep on walking... About a mile north the beach will end at the inlet, and you'll need to head back. For a change of pace, I took the road, and saw the marina. The beach area is pretty cool. When I was there (on a Saturday) there were a couple of food trucks and an ice cream truck. Beach does have life guards, and a (fishing?) pier, restrooms and a playground. The area has a few amenities, but it would be better if you brought everything you needed. Bottom line: Very nice beach and very accessible. PS. From the website: Note the "dogs on beach" info! Bay front park with ¾ mile of clean beach. Kayaks and paddleboats are available for rental. There are two picnic shelters with tables and grills, children's playground, restroom facilities available May 15th through September 15th from 10:00AM - 6:00PM, a stage pavilion for community events and ample open space. Dogs are not allowed in the park from May 15th to September 15th. Park Rangers are on site year-round. read more

My whole family goes here for a week every year! We look forward to it year round. It's a great beach! Lots of fish are pretty close to the shore so be careful. We've had a sting ray and a dolphin come right up near us last year. Everyone in my family of 9 has gotten stung by a jelly fish at one time over the course of three years. My favorite beach closest to Richmond! Large quite beach (compared to VA breach). Has restrooms, a huge playground, large picnic tables (great for parties), grilling stations, concession trucks (seasonal), jet skies (my fav), paddle boarding and kayak rentals right on the beach!! You can't get any better than this at the beach. Clean for the most part, great for solo or family time. Lots of people here are friendly. I totally recommend visiting this beach on a weekday or weekend :). read more

What an absolute gem of a place to spend your day! A wonderful beach with free parking and free admission. Clean bathrooms, outdoor showers, a covered pavilion with picnic tables, a playground! A fishing pier, plenty of boardwalk and when we were there some really good food trucks!!! I love this beach!! The water is calm and shallow, so you can walk all the way in. There is a nice and clean bathroom area where you can wash the sand off. On a recent day trip to the Hampton Roads area, my family decided to check out what I would only loosely describe as a "beach". The location sits in a run down part of town flanked by at least one dive motel and some run down housing. I don't believe you would want to be anywhere near here after dark as there was definitely a "seedy" element about even in the middle of the day. I did see routine police patrols of the park throughout the day..is that good or bad?..you decide. Adjacent to the beach is a park. The park, while spacious and with ample parking, was crowded, noisy and littered with trash. The beach isn't very big and the only plus was that I could play with my dogs on the beach because it wasn't yet the peak summer season. So in my opinion you would be better off either hitting the gold standard, Virginia Beach, or York Beach which is cleaner, has quaint shops and is just up the road. read more

Absolutely love this beach and very pleased that they offer, large, clean restrooms. Unfortunately, I was on the far end of the beach. I dreaded walking a long distance to the restroom but was pleased to see they had a Port-O-Pottie nearby. Bad move!!! It was totally disgusting! Very messy and appeared to have not been cleaned in a long time. So, I had no choice but to walk what seemed like the length of two city blocks to get to the restroom. Grateful it was clean and not crowded. I strongly suggest more Port-O-Potties on the far end (both sides) of the beach. Some may say, "Well, why didn't you just pick a spot closer to the restrooms?" We would have done that, but the beach area that was closest to the bathrooms and park was too crowded for us. The location on the far end had more open space and when we go to the beach, we always look for a spot that is away from the crowds. The beach area was clean and the water looked refreshing. The last time we came, it was loaded with seaweed. No problems with seaweed on this day! :-) There was a life guard nearby who kept folks off the rocks and made sure swimmers stayed within limits. He watched the beachgoers closely and provided that extra sense of comfort. Everyone was friendly and it was a peaceful, lovely experience. We all had a great time. We will be returning. One of my favorite spots to vacation when we come to the beach. Such a quiet, relaxing place to be. You do not have to pay for parking. There are lifeguards on watch and the beach is never crowded. This is my 2nd year bringing my family to Buckroe Beach and they enjoyed this year as much as last. There is also a large park with giant gazebos to hold family reunions and gatherings. Despite the bad blood I have with this area its a nice beach. My exhusband and I lived in the townhouses (the big white ones) right on the beach and I have to say waking up to the beach every morning is breathtaking. My neighbors were great which speaks volumes considering the surrounding areas. I only felt safe at Buckroe. Be careful around the surrounding neighborhoods. The actual beach is very family friendly. I didn't need to use the parking lot since we lived on the beach but the parking lot is HUGE and everything is free of charge. There is a pier that you can fish from which is really nice. I really loved this beach because its not like your typical beach swarming with little jerks trolling the boardwalk and giving no effs about kicking sand in your face as they walk by. Ok so I need to vent. I've lived on Buckroe Beach for 15 years now and love walking on the board walk, feeling the air, listening to the water and absorbing the peace. Yes, Buckroe is pretty peaceful. But this summer in particular, (2018), I've noticed, and yes am very annoyed by how many vehicles travel up and down the boardwalk and yes having to dodge them while trying to take a peaceful walk. In particular this summer it's the park rangers. I just came in from a walk and had to step aside 4 times in a matter of a length and one half walk of the boardwalk. Many times I'll have to step aside 6 to 8 times in a two mile walk to dodge vehicles. HELLO, it's a boardwalk not a board ride. Often times they'll just randomly sit there blocking the boardwalk forcing you to walk around their hot gas reeking vehicles. As many of you know Buckroe Boardwalk is not very wide. THIS IS ANNOYING! Having to step aside occasionally is one thing but having to step aside for park rangers, life guard carts, police cars, etc. 6-8 times during a 2 mile walk is a bit much. It didn't used to be like that. Why can't they sit/travel along the now defunct bike path??? Nobody uses it anyway. I could see this happening at the very busy Virginia Beach but not peaceful Buckroe! Whew, end of vent. read more

It's getting harder and harder to find a stretch of beach that is public and not over run with people, parties! Buckroe is just about as close as you can come to that, if your not intruding on someone's private property beach sections that run up the coast, it's not perfect but if you want to hang out with friend and have some room to play soccer or other activities this is your no one gets in your way as much beach! Not very crowded, free parking. No food, barely any fun events. If your a calm beach goer it's for you, it's also a nice place to skimboard, the waves come far up the shore and the sand is very packed and smooth. It's my favorite skim board spot around Hampton roads. read more

I love Buckroe beach and park. It's clean and beautiful here. The park is one of my kids favorites because of the zip line. It's just a beautiful and clean park that your child will enjoy! I really appreciates the clean bathrooms available for use too. I love being nearby Buckroe, I come here often just to relax. So much to do here! Fishing from the pier, shelters available to rent, nice place to ride your bikes, running or taking a walk. The beach is just fabulous. Summertime can get packed here. But I love it! read more

This is a very laid-back beach, definitley not the hustle & bustle like at the VB oceanfront. The playground is okay, in the summertime the equipment gets WAY too hot to touch and play on so that gets ruled out quickly. Their new restroom facilities are great; clean and always stocked with soap with two nice Xlerator hand dryers. Those things make me happy. Showers for washing off sand afterwards are also a nice touch This is definitley a kid's beach which makes it nice to bring my daughter who can always find new friends to play with on the beach while I chillax. Awesome beach! We were visiting Williamsburg for a week and the kids wanted to go to the beach... We found Buckroe Beach through Yelp and it was perfect! The beach was very clean (according to my husband who frequented the Jersey Shore as a child and young adult). There were bathroom facilities, showers to rinse off, lifeguards. It was so easy to get to from Williamsburg (26 miles down 64), and there was plenty of free parking! We had a fantastic time and will go again the next time we are in the area! read more

A good, small, community-oriented beach/park. I was staying on the Peninsula and wanted some beach time, but didn't feel like sitting in bridge-tunnel traffic to get down to Norfolk or VA Beach. It looked like Buckroe was my only option, and it turned out to be a pretty good option. The sand is very clean (aside from the occasional cigarette butt--yes you can smoke on this beach) and the water is not too rough. There's a lifeguard, volleyball nets, a long pier (I think for fishing), and a big pavilion right off the beach where you can get some shade. I can imagine lots of people getting married at Buckroe. Overall a great place to bring your kids or a group of friends. Not a stunner, but I've got no complaints. read more

A very nice place for local families that enjoy every detail about being on the beach without the jam packed over run tourist attraction and $20 parking!!! This is a very nice, not packed little beach. The beach itself was very clean and the lifeguards were very attentive to the people. There was not a fleck of trash in the sand or water that I could see either. I loved that it was not horribly packed like VA beach on a Saturday. And, being on this side of the water is a big bonus for not having to deal with HRBT! The only reason it is not 5 stars is that I saw a few jelly fish in the water. I know it can't be helped, but it did scare me especially that I had my baby in the water with me. Overall, I would definitely recommend this beach over VA beach. read more

Also forgot , I guess the Division Of Parks there in Hampton. Had what I believe was the lifeguards down around the water that morning with nets catching small fish, crabs, and other small animals and shell life. They set up a display under a canopy tent on the beach at the boardwalk with little tanks. So you could take your children up there and see these things and touch and handle them. That was pretty neat for the kids as well for some adults. This in my opinion was unique. read more
