I went to Greg's Auto Repair with a check engine light on my 2016 Scion. Upon arrival, I was…read moregreeted by the owner and he offered to check the codes. I had an engine and a transmission error code. A mechanic at the shop also checked fluids and found burned metal in them, not a great sign. They told me in the gentlest way possible it was time to get a new car. I asked what I owed them and they refused to charge me. Coming from NYC, I was taken aback to be treated with such kindness and good faith by strangers running a business. We talked more about cars and about some new cars to avoid that they are seeing a lot of problems with. Since this visit, I bought new car. It probably won't need work for a while, but whenever it does I know where I am going. Highly recommend this business for skill, integrity and trustworthiness. Thank you again Greg's Auto Repair.

TL:DR Greg's is the best around. Decent, trustworthy mechanics are worth their weight in gold…read more Background info: I turn my own wrenches. I work on my own cars and my motorcycles. In general, I don't use mechanics. But my wife's brakes started squealing, and she wanted us to find a good mechanic we could trust for the big jobs (Translation: she doesn't want to die if I mess up her brakes.) I called a couple of friends, and they both recommended Jeff at Greg's. I can't say enough good things about Jeff and his crew. I called and asked about replacing all 4 rotors and pads. Got quoted a very good price, and scheduled in for a Tuesday. Jeff called a few hours into Tuesday, and let me know that the front brakes were fine and didn't need replacing. I'd forgotten that we just replaced them not that long ago, and they didn't have many miles on them, just rust. The rears needed replacing, but the front just needed the rust ground off to stop the squealing. Now, a lesser mechanic would have seen the brakes were fine, and replaced them anyway; we'd have gotten what we asked for. Jeff doesn't roll that way. He fixed the actual problem, and it cost half of what we were quoted. Another note, the rotors he sold us are quality rotors. Ceramic coated so they won't rust after 5 minutes in the rain (unlike the old rotors our last mechanic installed!) All in all, Jeff and his crew are top notch. Honest, reliable, with a great reputation. 5 Solid Stars!!!

I was a customer of this place at that time! And I was quoted for a $600 repair (after diagnostics) that turned out to be fixed by a different mechanic for $80. The reason I was reluctant to describe in more detail our experiences is because this is a small town and I didn't know what kind of awkwardness leaving a bad review may entail. Perhaps the other reviewer who left a 1-star, somewhat vague review felt the same way, as his/her words were very relatable to me (something like "make sure to ask around"). It was a very bad, early experience for us when we moved into the area, and I felt compelled to write this again, because we relied on online reviews to find out my way around and the owners were apparently able to get a lot of their negative reviews removed (both my review here and on Google Maps got removed). It was my fault not willing to speak more openly. The following is what I wrote before, just trying to caution people to be more careful. --- (circa. January 2020) I would be very very careful with the likely fake reviews for this business. I saw the 200+ reviews on Google Maps, all five stars. However, until a few months ago, it didn't even have a presence on Yelp. I've never seen such a large contrast between Google Maps and Yelp and such a large number of identical ratings. So I did a little digging, please see the pictures. The majority of the reviewers have only ever written one or two reviews. Guess what? Those who wrote two, one is to this business and the other apparently to a new location of the same owner, with identical text. I don't think a real person would have such a review pattern. The second location is newer but also has racked up a 30+ all five star reviews. ---

Turns out I was too low in all 4 tires, and when I mentioned that the dashboard light is always on, which makes it hard to know if there really is too little pressure, he got the machine to test the sensors in the tires and confirmed that they are all working. And all of this without charging me at all. Really great to have a neighborhood place like this.

I had driven on a flat, and if you're unaware, this can rapidly degrade the quality of your drive. You can wear a CB joint, your axel, or your rotor, if I recall, and too much wear on these can do immense damage to your car's future. I had replaced two of my tires and still felt a wobble. How could it be the tires, I thought? This is why College Street Motors' experience comes into play. The car might as well be a multi-piece orchestra, with brake drums, piston percussion, and wheel woodwinds. I don't intend to go over the top with this metaphor, because it sounds like a bunch of noise and shaking for me. The mechanic left me a very detailed note, describing how there was nothing more discernible than the loud noise coming from the tires I had yet to replace. No wobbling due to damage to other parts of the car. Plus, I believe they warranty their work, maybe I'm just thinking of my AAA membership. After my tires were replaced, I was relieved at how right they were. As internal combustion engine drivetrain cars are complex, so are electrical cars in their own way. It's a world I have yet to get into, or may never dig deep enough to really gain a foothold of experience. Luckily, there're mechanics just down the street for me that took only a bit of time to diagnose the problem, find a tire match for the ones I had just gotten new, and then both install and balance. I bet their experience pays dividends to other customers, too, who are hoping to make sense of a new problem with little labor and diagnostics. Thank you all, even the pickup with your front desk team was pleasant.

Gil's, a mom and pop auto shop, is run by Daniel and his staff. When I first visited for a routine oil change, I was seen and changed within an hour for an incredibly fair price. I wondered if they needed my filter in advance? Or my oil? Nope--they had those all ready. It was this kind of family and expertise that I wasn't used to for auto shops. So, when my tow driver knew Gil's and was ready to tow my broken down car to Gil's for a repair, I called them ahead of time to clear it. No problem, again. This was an incredible relief. The day I showed up to get my car back, I was excited. I was concerned about my battery needing a premiere level to get the same level of cold cranks--nope--they found a battery 2/3rds the price new and had the cold cranking power. I was concerned that there might be something wrong besides my battery--yep, they suspected the starter and had called me for approval in fixing it. All in all, I expected to spend a thousand in repair fees, but found them a surprising amount beneath my own estimate. Somehow, Gil's manages to do great repair at market level or below, and I believe that's because they rely on their car know-how and more affordable software systems. They were affected by the Cloudflare outage on Tues 18th, 2025, like most of the people in the world. They could still print out my receipt just fine, and I was on my way. Don't be put off by the struggles their customers go through. Their 3rd party's air pump worked if you had a card, the coin slot was jammed. I thought I saw a car with a transparent tarp out front one day, and it was gone the next. People must be coming and going here with all sorts of classic and new cars, and somehow Gil's manages to stay atop these changes. From what I know, they'll be moved out of this location soon, so keep an eye out for where they end up next. Thank you, Gil's, I'm glad to be a part of your car family on College Street, with other quality mechanics you've referred me to.
