If you feel like getting ripped off then this is the right auto centre for you. I recently moved to BC and was required to obtain a vehicle inspection prior to insuring my car here. I was able to get a same-day appointment at Budget Brake and Muffler and the price seemed decent, at $99. Three hours later, the service provider Scott informed me that my vehicle had passed every category except for one. He explained that the control arm bushings were "ripped up" to the extent that he couldn't sign off on them until they were removed and replaced for a whopping $1433 plus taxes ($779 in parts, $653 in labour). I also called Canadian Tire to compare pricing and they said that they could replace those same parts for $669 plus taxes (both parts and labour included)! Since I'd had this vehicle checked over by a garage shortly before moving to BC in preparation for the BC inspection, I was suspicious and brought my car in to another garage for a second opinion. That inspection revealed that my car had passed every category, and that no issues had been identified with my car's control arm bushings. My impression is that if these guys have an opportunity to check over your vehicle, they will find issues which aren't necessarily there, AND end up overcharging you. read more

I had both front & rear brakes done on my car along with the install of a new battery. I found Scott very knowledgeable & helpful about the service the car needed. My service here was awful from beginning to end. I was having an issue with soft brakes. I asked if the shop would be comfortable dealing with the issue or if I should instead go to the dealership, and I was assured that my problem was well within the shop's capabilities. I drive a very popular Mazda. There were two days of "we will have an answer in a few hours!!!" without any solutions. Eventually, the shop tried (twice) to replace my Master Cylinder (a $560 part + labour costs), even though there was no leak because he "felt" that the Master Cylinder was "probably" the issue. This turned out to be a costly and unnecessary replacement. I was informed that the shop wasn't able to fully diagnose the problem because the brake system was unusual. I negotiated to have the original (and perfectly functional) Master Cylinder replaced, but was still charged an exorbitant "diagnostic" fee. For context, once I brought the car to the dealership, they were able to quickly diagnose the problem and confirmed that the attempted Master Cylinder replacement was not necessary- this had just been Budget Brake & Muffler's attempt at a cash grab. To top it all off, all four of my bleeder screw caps and the top slider cap in the left rear caliper was missing. Not a costly mistake, but a sign of poor workmanship which Budget refused to remedy. Disappointing service overall. read more

Brought my car in to get my spark plugs done. They mentioned there was an oil leak so replaced a gasket. Car ran better but with a weird engine shudder that wasn't there when I gave it to them. Gave it right back, had them look at it. A few hours later I get a call saying my engine is dead. I fire the car up and suddenly my engine sounds like a child banging pots together. Had my regular mechanic look at the car and he's convinced that they fired my engine up with no oil in it. They deny this but have yet to give me any story that makes sense. Since I'd payed for the first repairs, I'd gave them $1,500 to ruin my car. Go anywhere else. Literally anywhere. If these guys screw up, they will not own up to it. read more

Took my car in for an oil change - wanted just a basic one but they insisted their total check up package was cheaper at $35 bucks. sure enough, within half an hour got a phone call saying my front brakes were 'totally gone' and the rotors couldnt even be machined, meaning i needed new rotors too - total cost to replace them - around 450, plus labour. problem is, I just bought this car 6 months ago from a the dealership.. went to a mechanic friend for a second opinion, measured the brakes and were told they were fine. called the dealership, and was told that places like budget, kaltire, mr lube etc get you in the door with a cheap oil change but ALWAYS find something that needs replacing. On top of this, I stupidly gave them my address - literally 2 days later, the junk mail started filling my mailbox. Go to a local independent mechanic like Kon automotive or Auto unique instead! read more

I bought used car with an obnoxiously loud aftermarket muffler. Seller gave me the stock muffler. I needed it switched. Budget said they cannot switch it because the stock muffler is not compatible with the rest of the aftermarket exhaust system. They offered to order the stock exhaust system from their warehouse and will arrive in 2 hours. Parts and labour quoted at $800. The order was placed. I went for a second opinion at Muffler Man (7590 Kingsway). They switched the loud muffler with stock. Took about 30min. No problems. Charged $100. I called Budget to cancel my work order. Clarence said "We have all your parts here. Thanks a lot." with attitude. Was I supposed to be apologetic because I found a better price for what I originally wanted? Budget is either technically incompetent (compared to Muffler Man) or scams customers for excessive work. read more

*3.5 stars* As a girl, not knowing much about cars, I always have a sense of panic when I have to go to the shop. Am I going to be able to understand what they are talking about? Am I going to get ripped off? It's like being a tourist in a foreign country. They get the job done. After a 'free' inspection, they showed me what was wrong on my car before fixing it. And knowing I was on a budget (pun intended) told me the "FIX THIS ASAP" things as well as the "you should really fix this in the next few months" things. Unfortunately, the "free" inspection wasn't so free after taking into account all the parts and labour...and with my car sitting in a carriage without any wheels 10 feet in the air, I didn't have time to think about shopping around. I went there to get an estimate. my muffler was rusty. I was told they were unable to fix it and that it needed to be replaced. I have a 2002 mazda tribute. I was told that it would cost over $1600.00. I thought that was high and wasn't about to spend that much on an 18yo car. So I picked it up and paid them their $39.90 fee to look at it. I phoned three other shops and was told it would be in the $900 range but they would need to take a look.(free estimate) I ended up taking it to another shop and was told it would be between $700 and $800. The car's oil pan leaks all year long. It is getting worse now. I recently took my vehicle here for a full and expensive brake service. A week later I was having squealing, metal-on-metal grinding and pulsing brake action. I returned it for a check in as i felt something wasn't right. The front brakes weren't checked, and the back wheels were pulled off and I was informed i needed a new wheel bearing. The grinding was "fixed" by the mechanic inserting a screw driver and pounding the backing plate back. 10 kms later and all noises were back, and brake fluid was leaking from the front calipers. I took it to Rudy and Pete's next door on the Friday following and they informed me that the rebuilt calipers (that I thought were new calipers) that were installed were spewing brake fluid, and all the other work that was done, was falling apart and questionable. They told Budget that they were to re-do all the work. On TUESDAY i got my vehicle back, after having to call Budget and get very unpleasant on Monday. Personally, I prefer when spending over a thousand dollars on my brakes, that they work safely and effectively and that I can trust the work of the people doing it. This was a tremendous safety hazard and mess. I will never return anything to this company, nor recommend that any one i care about does. read more

If you want honesty, don't go here. I went to this location because of its relatively decent reviews, but quite frankly, I had two terrible experiences here. If you're a woman, prepare to be "taken for a ride" and I don't mean that in a good way. Here are the facts: I was charged more than $500 to fix my engine issues, and drove away with exactly the same problems as before. Here's the real reason you should never go here: When I went back to get it fixed (the same problem that I had already paid 500 to NOT get fixed), I was advised on what needed to be done (they had the nerve to charge $100 a second time for a diagnostic engine scan that certainly didn't work the first time if they fixed the wrong things), and the NEW estimate was almost $900 (on top of the 500 I'd already paid). I contacted a couple of other shops and was quoted close to HALF THE PRICE ELSEWHERE. The VW Dealership (known for its expensive prices) quoted me $490 for the EXACT SAME work. I took my car to Clarkdale VW dealership, and not only did they FIX my problem for 400 dollars less than Budget, but they also washed and vacuumed my car, AND drove me where I needed to go with their shuttle service. I'll say that Clarence and the mechanics were approachable and seemed like nice enough guys. But at the end of the day the numbers and poor service speak for themselves. read more

If you value your money stay far away from this place. I went in due to a burning smell coming from my brakes as well as very hot wheels which pointed to the brakes seizing and rubbing as I was driving. Budget advised me to replace the brake hoses to remedy the problem which they said could be causing it. They also said my e brake needed adjusting which they "fixed" Fastworard 1 day and the same problem was there as well as a new squeak coming from the brakes. After contacting these guys they said the next thing to try would be a new master cylinder (around $1800) At this point I didn't trust what they were telling me, so took it to my local mechanic with 50 years experience and told him the issue. Firstly he told me unless brake lines are broken and leaking there was absolutely no reason they needed to change those out. Secondly after only 6hrs of my vehicle being left with him he found the problem. It appears a pin that goes into the e brake was sheared off causing the pad to rub which explained both the burning and squeaking problems. All said and done the new mechanic charged me $160 to remedy the whole problem in 6hrs whereas budget brake charged me $450 to adjust the ebrake and replace the hoses which made it worse and wanted to charge be an additional $1800+ for a new master cylinder as the next course of action. In addition to all of this I also brought it in to get the loud muffler fixed. I assumed it was the muffler as I'm not a mechanic, but when I got it back the exhaust and muffler were replaced, but the nosie was still there. Turns out it was a manifold gasket all along. So not only did they not fix the problem that I brought it in for originally, but they just replaced parts that weren't even causing the problem. If someone brings a vehicle for a problem and they aren't a mechanic I think it would be safe to say that the actual mechanic should mention it's not the muffler causing the noise, but a manifold gasket instead of just replacing something else??? All said and done I walked out of that place $2100 poorer with the same noisy manifold and burning brakes that I came in for originally. read more

I've had several inexpensive cars over the past 6 years, all needing repairs at some point and I've always been impressed with Budget. They show me what's wrong with the car, explain the choices then give me a quote. I've never been charged more than the quote or had work done without my permission and the service has been friendly. Six months ago I made the mistake of taking my car to Midas for a simple oil change because it was close to where I lived. During their 'inspection' they damaged my exhaust pipe and told me I needed new brakes. I didn't believe them so took it to Budget who confirmed the damage to my exhaust then showed me that there was nothing wrong with my brakes!! - this was done free of charge and I had no further work done!! I highly recommend these guys for ALL of your repair needs - they do great work!! read more

If you value your money do not use these guys. They turned what should have been a $200 job into a $800 rip off. I originally took the car to my local repairer because I thought the noise was a manifold issue. He put the car on the lift and showed me the pipe that was broken. He said that a muffler repairer would cut the damaged piece out and weld in a new piece of pipe. Unfortunately I had to travel out of town and my wife took the car in to these people. At first they wanted to replace the entire exhaust system, on a 15 yo car with 230,000 km! They then suggested that they would do her a favor by only fitting a "stock" catalytic converter and the piece that was recommended by my repairer, for the low price of $800! Unfortunately she was only able to talk to me about 30 mins later and I tried to call him but "..the service guy has already started..." Do not use them unless you know exactly what is wrong and how much you should pay for the repair AND you are able to supervise them!!!! What a rip off! read more

Drove to Vancouver, Canada from Washington on a weekend get away. The traffic is horrible! The weather is horrible! Our car broke down the first day we were there. The only bright spot on our trip was the speedy work this place did to fix our car. They were wonderful. Of course I am not happy to have to pay for auto repairs while on vacation but I was expecting the car to be in the shop at least overnight. They had it back on the road in a few hours! DO NOT take your vehicle to Budget Brake & Muffler on 2nd Aveneue in Vancouver. I brought my vehicle in to have the brakes checked. The brakes had been done 3 months prior but because of the deteriorating weather I thought I would just get them checked as they seemed a little soft and probably needed a minor adjustment. I got a call with a quote of over $2,000 to repair the brakes. This was patently ridiculous and so I said that I would pick up my vehicle without getting any work done. When I went to pick up the vehicle there were suddenly NO brakes. They had obviously disconnected something so that I wasn't even able to drive the vehicle. I asked what the minimum I could get away with in order to drive the vehicle and they quoted over $1,000. I had this work done. The following week I took my vehicle in to my regular garage where I trust the people. They confirmed that I had been ripped off. I am very suspicious of any of the 5 star reviews on this website. Took my 2006 Mustang into Langley BBM because one of the cylinders was not firing. Had a discussion with the fellow behind the desk so that he realized I wasn't completely without knowledge of basic mechanics. My car had some performance upgrades and I informed him that the plugs and coil had less than 25000 km on them. They took the car in to what I was hoping was a diagnostic scope to discover the cylinder causing the issue. #4 wasn't firing they would do the obvious and change the plug, then I was told the plugs I was using weren't the ones in the book (oh no!) and that they would install the correct plug. Ok not arguing I could change the plug. Then I get a call that that didn't work and that they would install the original coil that I had supplied. That didn't work so now all the plugs? First off the if the coil was gone nothing would be sparking, second how are the other 5 cylinders that are working going to help fix one that isn't? Needed my car so said ok. SMH! Through all this I'm told that it could be a valve issue, (thank god they didn't have the time to fix that!!). I pick up my car still not running but now with new plugs all around and the old coil in place a $350.00 bill and 5 off my old plugs that were almost new the other and plug in question, they couldn't find. I took my car home thinking no way is this a bad valve as described when I dropped it off it only has 75000 km on it and it was working perfectly the night before. So I decided to change the plug wire to the #4 cylinder, worked perfect! How do you do all of this work send me on my way thinking crap this is gonna cost me $2000 plus to fix without checking three things, one the plug, two the plug wire then if still an issue do a compression test on the cylinder! This isn't even bad mechanics I won't let these guys fix a flat tire again! read more
