While not especially excited about the prospect I expected my stay in the Holiday Inn Express to be OK, I've used them many times before and they are generally good basic and clean places to stay. I must say the staff here were especially friendly and imparted lots of local knowledge which made it easier for me to get around. I did encounter a problem with a 'lady' playing music full blast at 6am, but a quick call to reception had that sorted out within minutes. The guy on the desk took the trouble to come and listen and then dealt with it. Would recommend this place for business stays and as a base for exploring. Also the Harvester next door has really friendly staff - food is good but fairly limited, however free salad bar was a bonus.

It seems the place to be for the people with a bob or two to pend, and it has a spa type leisure complex offering up to date lavish treatment that cost a pretty penny. While the accommodation can sometimes be a little on the small side, the rooms are clean and quite well appointed. The restaurant is very good, with a high standard. The staff were attentive and polite and we found the restaurant manager to be particularly attentive to our needs. In contrast, the hotel staff can be a little hit-and-miss, although never rude. Breakfast at weekends is a rather chaotic affair, with seating arrangements particularly difficult. Food ran out quite quickly and wasn't replaced fast enough, so a lot of time was spent queuing. Toast and coffee were not coordinated with the food and often arrived after the breakfast meal had been consumed. Dinner (3 courses with wine) is about £45-£50 pp, depending on your choices, but it is of a high standard. The room-rate ranges upward from about £100 per night. The hotel offers a pool and fitness facilities and, of course, there is ample scope to go walking around the beatiful countryside. A great place for a relaxing, quiet weekend with good food.

Its a reasonably small family run establishment with a few bedrooms (I think I was the only guest at the time) located, as the name suggests, by the side of the towns small railway station. The rooms were comfortable and adequate, the breakfasts were fantastic - and they even accomodated me getting up at a stupid time of morning and having an early breakfast for work purposes. The bar area takes up most of the floorspace, and while the locals are a little insular at the best of times, it was reasonably friendly, and service was always with a smile. The price for a five night stay was particularly reasonable, and I;d certainly go back again if I was in the area.

The one thing that annoys me, the ATM. This ATM, without fail is not compatible with my card. My card is always declined, not sure why (although I have my suspicions), but it is just annoying. This site misses out on 5 stars, for a few points, some of which are being improved upon due to…read moreongoing site upgrades, others which need consideration. None of them spoiled our weekend, and for the price, this site is a gem. The site has two fields for camping. The first includes both tents and caravans and includes power points. It also features free-range chickens, which we decided to avoid. The other field was dedicated to tents and has no electric hook ups. On the minus side: A water tap in the 'tent' field would save relatively long walks with heavy water cans. Whilst the new showers were very good and clean, the water did run cold at busy times over the May bank holiday weekend. The showers are new for 2011 and the water heating is due for an upgrade in 2012, so this problem should be short-lived. Note the old showers to the rear of he Hall still require a 50p payment in the meter. Not a problem for me, but if you're used to wet shaving, there was a lack of hot water and a mirror in front of a sink On the plus side: afternoon cream teas were served from the coffee shop on the lawn An on-site bar and coffee shop An on-site farm shop, with farm shop prices, but the quality to go with it 5 minute walk to the Kings Arms, Wing Within a stones throw of Rutland Water Free wi-fi available in the vicinity of the hall well priced campsite and friendly staff Overall, I would recommend this site to a friend, especially if you're an outdoor type looking to explore Rutland Water and the surrounding countryside.
