First, I have to acknowledge that nobody and no business is perfect. But -- I gotta tell ya -- MMA comes close. They tell you what its policies are up front and they honor them. My experience with Montgomery has been uniformly positive and I can't wait to get started again. The owner is a pro, knows his art, treats his team well and manages the business firmly but fairly. No surprises -- what you see is what you get. He's a charming devil too, but that's not the point (grin). No review of this nature is useful unless the reader is familiar with how the majority of martial arts schools operate. If you do a careful, time-consuming local survey, you'll become educated find many of the local schools to be in a similar or higher price range -- up front. But after you are involved, there are significant fees associated with testing for next rank and a variety of other things. I have a little experience in this area. I call these belt-farms. You or your child will definitely get a black belt from one of these schools, but that is much different from BEING a black belt. And that brings me to the topic of quality... To pursue and become a black belt, you must be dedicated, humble and avail yourself of the benefit of the best teachers and management. That is what I found at Montgomery Martial Arts. I studied the same discipline in PA and in CA as well. In PA, the the talent was there among the leadership but the classes were poorly organized. In CA, the teaching was "OK" and so were the classes -- when they happened (unreliable). As I have been considering going back, I have been taking my kids to watch in the windows of other schools during their classes. Even my kids can see the difference. Do what we did -- go to other schools and watch through the windows. Pay close attention to individuals of higher ranks like brown or red belt and watch them carefully. Especially when they are kicking, watch how much control they have. How is their balance. Do they look confident. Do this at three schools to compare and then do the same at Montgomery Martial Arts. I guarantee if you do, you will arrive at the same conclusion as my 7 and 9 year olds who want to train at MMA. Bottom line -- Montgomery Martial Arts is a great school for adults as well as kids (which is also unusual). The instructors are first class because the owner won't have it any other way.
