Named for Sing Lum who graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1924. He helped organize the Panama Union School District and was on the first school board in 1944. At the age of 65, Mr. Lum became a competitive runner. He set national and international records by the time he was 70! In 1970, he retired as a farmer from Wasco. He went back to school to get his real estate license. He died in 1994 at the age of 90. I have been at this school for 17 years, 12 of which I have been employed. I have been through three principals and a variety of staff members over the years. I love this school because my children went here and I was always actively involved. It's a great little location right next to Campus Park South. Many students have had many "park days" over the years. This is the last year of the original "temporary" school foundation. Students and staff coming back for the 2016-17 school year will be treated to a brand new school! It's definitely bittersweet for many...leaving so many fond memories behind but also looking forward to a new beginning! I gave 5 stars because all the principals have been amazing over the years. The front office staff is friendly and always helpful, and the teachers are GREAT. If your child is lucky enough to be a Lum Lion, consider yourself lucky!!

The reason I did bad things was because I was so sad I didn't care what I did anymore . Instead of my teacher , the behavioral coach, the vice principal, and principal considering there had to be a reason I was doing bad stuff , but no instead they punished me and lectured me. This only made it worser, everyday I would wish I didn't have to go to school because I knew my teacher hated me and would target me a lot . Also , the behavioral coach also notice when his "favorite students" would hang around bad influences he would tell the favorite student fake information that they were speaking bad about them. He shouldn't do that because he doesn't know if his "favorite student" was the actual bad influence. I hope he sees this and knows don't ever do that again because you made my year a lot worser. Everyone liked his " favorite student" so they left me out , stopped hanging out with me , talked bad about me and made my school year a living hell.

I've had more ups than downs at this school, but my son excelled attending here and that's why I rated this school 5 stars. A few things that I thought was the downside of this school is that there's not too many students who get involved with the academic programs versus the athletic programs. I think sports are important; however, I'm shocked that there wasn't more kids volunteering to get involved in Math Field, Battle of the Books and other academic activities. My son only had a bad experience with one teacher his whole time attending here and part of the problem was that he was unorganized, but when we reached out to Ms. Zaragoza (GATE language arts) she had a bad attitude. Rather than coming up with a plan, she was argumentative and we had to involve the principal. The situation was only resolved because the principal stepped in. If we did not reach out to someone above her she would have continued to act unprofessional. I believe that if you become a teacher then you should do it because you love kids, because if you don't then you'll be acting like Ms. Zaragoza and that's a shame. All in all, I think Tevis Jr High is a great school. They have a really nice staff. My son absolutely loved so many of his teachers. This school praises the kids for doing great by rewarding them and they do a lot of school spirit activities. They have a really nice band program and the kids get to march at Disneyland which is a plus for the kids.

First off, the school culture and environment isn't really the best. I faced a lot of discrimination from others for my race and culture, and I mean A LOT, which I find that there was absolutely no sense of discipline when it came to that stuff. I originally wasn't in huge favor of the place because theres just not a lot of strong school spirit or connection among others, but there was so much more that gave me a good reason to hate the place. My biggest thing was the administrative staff, specifically the counselors. The staff are extremely selective about who they tend to and actually try to help (ahem the students with wealthy parents), and they completely disregard those who are simply just trying to make it through and be successful without having any social status. They completely lied to me and my mom multiple times about classes, and never even acknowledged my schedule plans or preferences, and I had multiple different counselors mind you. I felt completely unsupported by the staff, and I genuinely mean it when I say I feel like I wouldn't have made it far if I hadn't transferred to a school who actually values their students experiences. Im sure many have different experiences and views and love this school, I personally suggest that you don't send your kid here. -Sincerely a newly proud Driller

It's clear that student success comes first, both academically and socially. One of the school's greatest strengths is its outstanding staff. Lakeside has a great mix of experienced veteran teachers and enthusiastic newer educators who bring fresh ideas and energy to the classroom. Together, they are committed to helping every student succeed and reach their full potential. Lakeside offers students outstanding opportunities with facilities that are unique for a TK-8 school. The campus includes a beautiful auditorium, a gymnasium for athletics and activities, and a swimming pool that provides additional opportunities for students, families, and the community. These spaces help create a well-rounded educational experience beyond the classroom. The campus is well maintained, communication with families is excellent, and there are many opportunities for students to get involved through academics, athletics, extracurricular activities, and special events. The school has a strong sense of community, and you can tell that the staff takes pride in building positive relationships with students and parents. Lakeside is also known for its incredible community support. If you have the chance, don't miss the annual Lakeside Deep Pit BBQ, held on the first Sunday of May each year. It's a long-standing community tradition that brings together students, families, alumni, staff, and local residents for great food, fun, and fellowship. It's one of the many things that makes Lakeside feel like more than just a school--it's a true community. If you're looking for a TK-8 school in Bakersfield that values high expectations, caring educators, strong academics, and a family atmosphere, Lakeside School is an excellent choice. I highly recommend it to any family looking for a quality education and a supportive school community.

I enjoyed nothing about this school except for my friend group. They do not handle bullying at all. This school is a good place to get bullied physically and emotionally. This place is also very unsanitary. They had kids swimming in pools filled with algae. Their water fountains also tasted very bitter. I have scars on my thighs from past self harm, kids would make fun of me and told me my scars were nasty. One kid then proceeded to try and touch my thigh while I was changing for PE. When I told a teacher about it guess what they did? Absolutely nothing!! Everyday when I got home from school, I would cry everyday begging to go somewhere else. This place destroyed my mental health. I would not recommend ANYONE going here.

This is the first time having to come to the actual district office. It looks like their buildings are on two streets. There are plenty of parking and even solar panels in the parking lot! Even if you walk into the main office, the receptionist will tell you where to go, like she did me, because there are different buildings for different services. It can be kind of confusing. Staff was kind, though, and the building I did have to go into for the info on fingerprinting I had to get buzzed into. This whole process was very easy, which I appreciated. My little girl will remain in the Panama-Buena Vista School District for Jr High as well, so I'm hoping my experience will remain as pleasant as it has been for elementary!

I am very well aware this is part of the parents rights to obtain a copy of it for their records. My child is in 7th grade this isn't her first IEP and won't be her last. I have emailed the woman who conducted the meeting Monica H., as well as her teacher who is supposed to be giving her a whole period of extra help AND the principal of Stonecreek. Finally went in person, asked the front desk lady. She wrote my name down I STILL LEFT WITH NO IEP. No IEP still. Maybe not conduct the IEP meetings via zoom? That way the parent can get a copy after the meeting is over? No responses on email from multiple people including the principal who are all employed at Stonecreek nor the woman who represented PBVUSD that led the IEP meeting back in early September. The lack of communication and care is shameful. They have pushed her through grade after grade knowing she has autism and a learning disability. Her teachers have no problem failing her knowing she has this disability. Grades are supposed to be weighted. She turns in all of her work and has 4 Fs in multiple subjects. Clearly she's in classes that are too hard for her. Wouldn't that be a sign to provide this child with more services? Not at Stonecreek or PBVUSD. They are content pushing her through each subject and grade with MINIMAL help.

Built in 1893, it's one of the oldest high schools in Central California, and after all of these years still boasts top-notch faculty, diverse student body, active parents and top students. It's also one of the only high schools in CA with streets and traffic bisecting it. *Highlights* - Elm Grove, a beautiful urban park in the middle of campus - The Drillers, a unique and distinctive mascot - Harvey Auditorium, the only real performing arts center in a Kern County high school - a WPA building, btw. - Warren Hall, 3-story main classroom building built in 1920s Beaux Arts style - Griffith Field, a top-notch stadium that is the envy of area high schools - Diversity, this is one of the most diverse h.s. in central California, both culturally and socio-economically - Blue & White, a nationally-award winning high school newspaper - Oil Derrick monument that fronts California Avenue - Offers the highest number of AP classes in the Kern High School District - Famous Alumni include Frank Gifford (of ABC Monday Night Football fame) and Earl Warren (U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice) The teachers are overwhelmingly qualified and caring and it is as positive a time as one can have in high school. Students can go here and be very well prepared for college and graduate school. Every high school has its negatives. I'm certain that it is an awkward time for everyone, but I guess my conclusion is that BHS actually inspires growth and real-world collaboration compared to other high schools in the area.
