Buffalo Mountain had been so kind over the years helping me with my dog. My dog was riddled with health problems. They helped me figure out economical solutions for dealing with my dogs health issues. Unfortunately my dog went down hill over night after my vet visit to get prescriptions updated. Sally was very sick. Our whole family came in to assist with her euthanasia. It was very upsetting for us and everybody was so patient and kind to us. I was told by Buffalo Mtn Animal Hospital that my cat would need possibly one of two teeth extracted...I dropped my cat off and made it very clear that as long as it was one of the two teeth I was pointed out then it would be fine for them to continue and do it without notifying me again until I came to pick up & pay... When I went in to pay they said they did not need to extract either of those teeth but proceeded to take it upon themselves and go ahead and extract a completely different never-pointed-out tooth. Could you imagine dropping off your kid at the dentist for one thing & when you go to pick them up you find that the dentist just decided to go do whatever they wanted to your kid without your approval nor ever attempting to notify me? They are lucky I didn't sue them, malpractice as such will be exposed! read more

A friend with a Bernese Mountain Dog recommended Buffalo Mountain Animal Hospital when my previous vet left Summit County. I previously had 3 vets in 3 years - unfortunately - at a different animal clinic In Summit County. I brought my nearly 9 year old Bernese Mountain Dog to Dr. Murphy at Buffalo Mountain Hospital after she had a failed ACL/CCL surgery at another clinic due to multiple infections and the need for a redo procedure. My pup started having GI issues and constant diarrhea. Dr. Murphy gave me an appointment immediately. She was proactive and suggested an ultrasound. They found a mass on her spleen that was removed and fortunately benign. Dr. Murphy probably saved my pup's life since spleen masses tend to cause the spleen to rupture, causing instant death. She then found the cause of her GI distresss and diagnosed additional issues that she jumped on immediately. Bernese Mountain Dogs typically have a short life span and Dr. Murphy has played a huge role in keeping my pup going. My pup also became "normal and energetic" for the first time in a long time. I can't thank her and her staff enough for making time to see us as needed - and we were new to the practice. Dr. Murphy is always kind to my pup, thorough in her exams, exemplary in her follow up, compassionate with me and so responsive to every question or concern I have. She has many years of experience as a veterinarian and it shows with her incredible diagnostic skills. The entire staff has been warm, gracious, compassionate and responsive. If I get their voice mail when I call, I immediately get a text asking what I need and do I have an urgent problem. It is so comforting to have this kind of care in Summit County when it is hard to find a stable, consistent veterinary practice and hard to get into see anyone if you're new to a practice. I am in awe of this team's skills, concerns, graciousness and responsiveness. While I haven't met the other vets in this practice, I have seen them while I am at their desk and have said Hello and asked if I have been helped. Having had dogs for over 30 years, I can't believe my good fortune to have found such an amazing practice. It has been a very long time since I had a veterinary practice this good! I've worked with Buffalo Animal Hospital for about a decade and have had great experiences with several of their vets and staff. They are true animal lovers and care about my cats' wellbeing. Their prices are very reasonable. After my 23-year-old cat Sophie passed away, I waited a while before adopting companions Hope and Glory for my then 14-year-old cat, Ford. When I brought Hope and Glory in for their first visit, Dr. Murphy sat down on the floor with them and spent time getting to know each of them. When issues arise, these vets take the time to explain all options and prices in a way I can understand. Under their care, my cats have lived up to 23 years with an outstanding quality of life. I have been exceptionally pleased to work with Dr. Murphy, Dr. Cowan, Dr. Cerevelli, and Dr. McCollough. I'm currently working primarily with Dr. McCollough on Ford's (now almost 17 years old) age-related issues and Hope's weight issues. All three cats are doing great!! Dr. McCollough manages Ford's kidney issues well with periodic testing and monitoring and the right prescription food. With his arthritis, Ford was having difficulty getting up and down stairs. At times, I had to carry him and was getting ready to confine him to one level. That is until Dr. McCollough and Dr. Cerevelli recommended miracle arthritis shots at a very reasonable price. I was reluctant to stress Ford with monthly trips to the vet, but it was well worth it. After just two monthly shots, I noticed a significant improvement in his mobility. After 3 months, Ford (almost 17 years old) is surprising me by jumping up on my desk, literally running up and down stairs, and wrestling with Hope and Glory. I never thought this was possible. He is like a kitten again. Also, my large and strong cat, Hope, can be very hard to handle. I had to cancel vet appointments because I couldn't get Hope in her carrier, even with a helper. Dr. McCollough prescribed meds to calm her down and taught me how to handle Hope and get her into her career. Notwithstanding Hope's strength and intimidating growl and hiss, Dr. McCollough can calm her down for exams, blood work, etc. I no longer have to use a sedative to get her to the vet. Sooooooooo compassionate! Recently, we had a need for an emergency visit. I called on a Sunday, expecting to get an answering service, but Ross actually answered! Near tears, I could hardly speak. That was my first relief. We were able to get an appointment the following day, squeezed in he said. Yes, the second relief. They had moved to a new location, and easy to find. Hubby and I were immediately shown to an exam room, even though we were a tad early. Looks like there's designated cat rooms separate from dog rooms - verrrry cool - where Raleigh, an adorable tech, was quick to offer our furrr-baby a treat - crack for cats she called it, trying to comfort all of us. Trying hard to laugh, I was near hysterical and crying with worry. Gently, she jumped right to vitals. Not long waiting, Dr. Shannon was nothing short of aaahhhhhhMAZING! Asking lots of questions, she was so warm and extremely compassionate. Her interaction with Raleigh was friendly and encouraging too. (Tremendous team, I thought to myself.) Who knew there were tests for reflexes? With an extremely thorough exam, X-rays were taken, and explained in impeccable detail too. Her vast experience allowed a fairly quick diagnosis, describing this was something she had seen maybe once ever. Plenty of specifics, like we've never. Ever. had before, we were quickly put at ease. Dr. Shannon wasn't rushed at all, even being squeezed in. (Some vets that we've been to are only good for assisting over the Rainbow Bridge, sadly, and should just retire. Practicing with feigned interest is such a tragedy.) There was nothing for us to do but watch her over a few days. It really builds trust, going to a new vet, to hear them say 'just watch'. Well, that brought on fresh tears, and the third relief! There wasn't any need for my or hubbys' questions because she covered them all. Beth helped us check out and was a real sweetie too. Wow! It's impossible to find great care like this ! They actually answered the phone, had time to see my acutely ill dog ON A SATURDAY with no waiting for hours in a crowded waiting room! In addition, Dr Cowan gave my dog great care and explained her diagnosis and treatment thoroughly. Great vet techs and office staff too. Well, I waited to write this review until certain my dog did not get the proper care for her UTI. Find a different vet!!!! The front desk guy lied to me several times about our results coming in. Finally i go in and ask for a printout. Sure enough everything was there. A day later, i call again about a prescription. The desk guy lies and says the antibiotic sensitivity test was not done. Even though i had the papers in front of me. Vet called back 5 minutes later stating her results were in only to prescribe the same antibiotic she'd already been on two rounds and didnt help. A 3rd round could have really caused some resistant bacteria badly. I noticed on her test that a different drug was twice as effective and asked about that, after politely declining another round. Turns out we did not even get the prescription we asked for, but a MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE and much less effective one instead????? We drove out of state to a different vet and i am glad we did or honestly I believe they would have no problem malpracticing their way to a dead dog. Screw this expensive ass place. Almost $2,000 and 2 months in with no resolution!!! Do not support this place. The only nice thing i can say is dr. McCullough should find another place to work because she seemed the only competent person in the place although definitely trained in pharmaceutical salesmanship. I guess my first doctor interaction was with Dr. Christy - latest issues with Dr. Mark Cowan. Every time since, they claimed they do not have my dog's records from previous vet, then magically find them. Asked the same questions 2x by three different people, later seeing it was all in the chart they emailed me. They didn't know that my dog was a female (concerning for a vet practice, especially when the doctor kept referring to her as a male). Recently went during COVID lock down and they did not address anything other than the expensive vaccinations so I could get refills on my dogs epilepsy meds so she won't have 5 seizures a day. I asked to talk to them about her cough, which is due to her cardiomyopathy. It was never address. About 30 minutes and $500 later, I complained. Mark wrote an email saying they would love to talk, gave them times and I never heard back. This seems to be in huge juxtaposition to what people have been posting as reviews, so maybe it's just me, but maybe this will help someone making decisions. Will be looking for a new vet unfortunately, my dog matters to me. read more

They made us feel right at home and like we had been there before! We were emailed a very detailed report of the vet visit (never have I received something like that before) which was so nice. My only complaint is per the vet staff, there are 0/3 vet practices in the area that are able to keep dogs overnight and give IVs. read more

I brought in my 7-y.o. pitbull-mix who was having some major issues with diarrhea, vomiting, and walking wobbly. Immediately we were seen for our 3:30pm appointment (11/27) and put to ease when lovely Dr. McCollough and wonderful vet tech Heather felt confident in what my boy had going on. After a urine analysis and blood tests, it was determined my little man is a diabetic and was battling ketoacidosis. We were given so much new information on diabetes in dogs and a new diet for him as well. We were given an entire demonstration on how to inject insulin the safe and correct way. After what had been a nightmare of a day, this clinic made me feel reassured and safe. I can't recommend these folks enough. This will be our #1 spot from here on out. (side note: Heather the lovely tech reached out to us this morning (11/29) just to check in on us before our follow-up appointment next week.) No! No! No! If you are a local, or even visiting, please drive a few extra miles to another vet. I really wish I had trusted my intuition on this one. I was spending a few days in the mountains from Denver, and my puppy broke a toenail, making it appear to be sideways and looking like a worse injury than what it ended up to be. It did bleed and I could tell it bothered her. So, I did some homework and wanted to see a vet, just in case. Unfortunately, I could not get into the Frisco Vet last minute and found this option, rather than driving home. I spoke to my vet at home, and they suggested to have them cut it down and assess if she needed a painkiller for a day or two. When I got to Buffalo Mountain Animal Hospital, the staff (reception and vet tech) was great. However, when we saw Dr. Christine Murphy, it was not the most pleasant experience. In addition to her not being friendly at all, she was not thorough in inspecting my puppy's toenail. I'd call it more of a glance. Then she was quick to make suggestions of x-rays, anesthesia, and prefaced it with other things that could go wrong (mind you, those things were those note tended to properly upon injury like we were doing). I immediately had a terrible gut-feeling that she either had no clue what she was talking about, was trying to pull a sly one on us, or just wanted to talk text-book about what I already knew could possibly go wrong with this 'injury' - that of which she didn't inspect thoroughly enough to know anything about to begin with. She wasted no time giving me a quote that was in the ballpark of over $380 - $415+. I kindly said 'no thanks', asked for a painkiller that would hold her over until we got home in a day, and see our vet if we had a bigger injury than expected. Clearly, she was offended. Dr. Murphy was cold and basically wanted nothing to do with us, and was gone before I could turn around. No - 'thank you for coming in', 'hope she's going to be ok', etc. Almost $80 for a 2-minute visit with her that told me nothing, and some painmeds to keep her comfortable. It's not the cost of visit or meds that bothered me; it's the level of service and how I felt she was treating me. Well, I just got home from my vet that I LOVE (Highlands Animal Clinic in Denver) a day and a half later. They saw me through a terrible sickness with my previous dog, so I know and trust them. Come to find out, the nail was not broken all the way to the base of the bed like Dr. Murphy stated, but rather about 1/2 way down the quick. My vet also said that her injured toe/toenail is one of the main digits for dogs, and if any bone was broken (which is what Dr. Murphy was saying could have happened, hence x-rays) or if she had more severe injury, that I would definitely know. My vet cut her nail down a bit, visually showed me exactly what was going on (why her nail was sideways from the break), and let me know that it could definitely break off, be painful, and possibly need to be treated - and if that was the case, what to do, look for, that it's not emergency status, etc. They certainly did not feel as though she needed x-rays, etc., and explained when and why we could possibly have had that need, and indicators of needing it. I am glad I trusted my gut feeling about spending nearly $400+ for nothing, and waited until we got home. I am less than impressed with Buffalo Mountain Animal Hospital and encourage you to do some homework on who is the best to care for your best friend, no matter the circumstance - check ups, sick, aging, injury. I have spent thousands of dollars on pet care, wellness, and even treating a tumor at CSU, seeing nearly every doctor under their roof. I have had and know extraordinary vet care, and this certainly does not fit the bill in any way. Don't go here just because it is convenient, a few miles closer in the valley, or maybe $50 cheaper. read more

Dr Cowan and his team go above and beyond. He has taken care of my kitty for 17 years. Yesterday we had to send our beloved EC kitty to heaven. Not only did they make it comfortable for us but for our Kitty as well. Dr. Cowan is compassionate as well as his team. They had it set up for us to stay and say goodbye. I am a Summit County resident for almost two decades. My adopted Border Collie mix (7+ years) Lucy had something caught (we found out later), actually LODGED in her palate (interior of mouth/upper). Couldn't figure out what was wrong. Without any appointment I drove up and they 1) were friendly as heck, 2) took care of her within 10 minutes. The vet (male, Dr. Cowan?) advised me they would have to put her under anesthesia if they couldn't get her mouth open enough to use a forceps to get what we discovered was the stick out. They let me go in the back and help hold her jaw open. We got it done! Couldn't believe it - stick was almost 3 inches long. Fee was EXTREMELY reasonable. Take it from a local - these folks, the entire staff are top of the food chain. read more

I've taken my dog here for 6 years and have always appreciated Dr. Cowan and the rest of the staff. I was quoted for surgery for the removal of a mass on my dogs eyelid 6 months before I pulled the trigger with my girlfriend and we got it done. I thought maybe it would cost more since the mass grew bigger, but the final cost was about $75 less than the quote and for everything involved I think was a very fair price! The BEST thing though about Buffalo Animal Hospital is they did a GREAT job and his eye is SO much better. He seems to be happier without the mass messing up his vision. They sent a text when he was out of surgery, and called the day after to check on him. It's good customer service, but it also feels like they generally care about your animal. A store called "Buffalo Mountain Animal Hospital" is not an accredited hospital. I will never take a pet to this store. Do not be fooled. Our dog suffered and yours should not. Our 10, almost 11, year old English bulldog Willy was presented to Mark Cowan (licensed in Colorado as Stuart Mark Cowan, VET.0005415) on Friday afternoon May 6, 2016 for care as he appeared to be ill. This licensee looked at Willy and took one and only one radiogram. The licensee determined that Willy needed emergency surgery for a twisted stomach (referred to as GDV procedure). Thereafter, some form of surgery was performed because Willy had evidence of an incision. (Reportedly, the stomach was readjusted and an organ (spleen) was removed.) Willy was supposedly placed in ICU (there was a large charge for such service). On Saturday May 7, 2016 the licensee (or his staff) called to say we had to pick up the dog because they were closing at noon. The licensee at some point said that he had no one to cover and watch Willy the rest of the weekend, which was Mother's Day weekend. The "emergency" operation had ended sometime around 5:00 p.m. Friday and Willy was being kicked out of the store by noon the next day, which seems crazy to me. It appears that the licensee removed Willy from ICU, removed IV fluids and then prematurely sent Willy home with instructions to force feed medicine, force feed water with a syringe, and offer regular food to a elderly English bulldog who just had major surgery. As Willy was given the bum's rush, he could only stagger and could not walk at all, but he was expelled from this store. We were given a phone number to call. ("Do not hesitate to call if you have any questions or concerns. 970-xxx-xxxx for the weekend, otherwise we will be back in the hospital on Monday.") The licensee refused or neglected to actually answer this phone or to provide any other aftercare help. Willy was failing and we called for help, and nothing. Willy was dead within a few hours and appeared to have suffered the entire time. And, the body was lain upon Willy's bed until Monday, when it could be removed for cremation. This licensee finally called around lunchtime Monday, May 9, 2016. This store, contrary to its advertisements, is not to my mind a full service anything, especially a hospital, and is not staffed as a hospital. It is hugely over priced and it caused Willy to die in horrible needless pain. (This store charged over $2800 for this kind of de minimis pseudo-care. They also made our son sign a note that charges 18% interest when he could only pay $1400 right then.) I guess they are in the usurious loan business too. We had to make the very painful decision to put our 15 year old dog to sleep yesterday. Dr. Vanessa Koehler was wonderful. She is an expert in Quality of Life issues. She was empathetic and helped us make a good decision. The euthanasia procedure was handled perfectly. We will always be indebted to Dr. Koehler. read more

We had an emergency call this weekend with our Australian Shepard. We found that Buffalo Mountain's were the only ones open on a Saturday taking emergency calls. When we arrived they whisked us into the exam room. The vet and staff were fabulous. Luckily everything was fine with our dog. They walked though the procedures, were incredibly gentle with her. We were able to stay with her through the whole procedure. They called the net day to follow up. I would definitely consider using them for our routine visits. read more

In early June we were on a road trip with our dog, Buddy, who was constantly shaking his head. We figured an ear infection. We called to explain our travel circumstances and they got us in right away to see Dr. Cowan. The staff was outstanding and professional, Dr. Cowan was great, and compassionate. He scoped Buddy's ear and thought there was a grass seed or a thistle in his right ear canal. He thought surgery with sedation was indicated, however, we could not do it at that time. He gave us Zymox for Buddy's ear which seemed to help. Six weeks later we are home and Buddy starts shaking his head again. We went to our own Vet and he scoped Buddy and thought there was a seed in his right ear. Buddy was sedated and a lot of debris was removed from his right ear canal. We just wanted to thank the staff and Dr. Cowan for being so sharp in their diagnosis and so accessible to travelers and their dog. If we lived in the area, we would be using them whenever we had a canine health issue. read more

After a year of searching for answers for my sweet Siberian Husky, Brutus, he is finally on the road to recovery from his illness. We just switched to Buffalo Mountain from Farmer's Korner Vet, who we spent tons of money and time on miscellaneous tests that had no relevance in what was wrong with him. After two visits to Buffalo Mountain, he is already so much healthier and looking so much better. Their facility is clean and well maintained and the staff actually seems devoted to finding out what is wrong with your fur baby. I could not thank them enough! read more

I have visited many other vets in the county, looking for the right one. They are very knowledgeable, a good price, easy to get appointments with, and very friendly. They really understand dog behavior and are very good with my Shiba Inu, which can be a difficult dog breed. Great vet! read more
