I enjoyed it, I just wish it had less hominy. They had baked potatoes, hot dogs, empanadas, beef stew with potatoes. There was an omelette station that was working at a fast speed. There was a dessert station of sweet treats. I believe I paid $140.00 pesos for two. The baked potatoes were loaded with sour cream, butter and bacon bits. The empanadas were good but could use more seasoning inside. There are pancakes, fresh fruit and Mexico rice. If you enjoy coffee this place has a great brew. I wish the set up was different. They have the omelette station with people waiting where the menudo station is. A lot of foot traffic. The service was just ok for me. At least from the drink person, I was almost done eating by the time I got my drink. However everyone else was awesome! I was expecting something different because of the name. This is a Mexican restaurant. I would come back here again. If you are ever in town, this is a great Sunday buffet.

Occupying the former…read moreSouplantation building, the restaurant offers a consistent weekend price for both lunch and dinner. On weekends, they feature a premium all day menu that includes all you can eat crab legs. Between the cold and warm crab leg options, I found the warm ones to be superior as they're less salty and much more flavorful. The buffet offers a solid variety of Asian fusion staples, such as fried rice, orange chicken, and honey shrimp, alongside a surprising selection of sushi and decent sashimi. My personal favorites were obviously the crab legs, stir fried whole mushrooms, clams, string beans, and the scallops with vermicelli served in the shell. The service is quite attentive; the staff is quick with drink refills and clears finished plates promptly. They also provide practical extras like crab crackers and disposable gloves. While the dining area is spacious and relaxed, I would suggest skipping the dessert section, as those offerings were not appetizing. Overall, it is a reasonably priced spot for a wide variety of food in a comfortable environment. A solid 3.5 stars.

Upon arriving there were a few questionable items being served as far as sanitary and temperature. With that being said my family has and is currently experiencing the symptoms of food poisoning, since we were here earlier for dinner. If you are visiting double check the temperature of the sushi, the texture of the chicken, and mold in the fruits. There was also cream cheese ragoons, I was wanting eat but as soon as I took it apart there were black spots in it , so I set it aside. Something we ate here was just not right as our entire family is experiencing sickness. We are in Carlsbad for a vacation and this was not in the plans for to dine in and later experience diarrhea and vomiting! It was definitely the food, so please be warned.

The atmosphere is lively and they even have live bands on some days, which adds to the experience. Service can be a bit slower during busy times, but overall it's still a fun place to visit. And I put buffet in quotations because it's not actually a standard buffet, but more of a sit down "all you can eat". You need to be at blue card level (2nd tier level) to gain access to the buffet but they sometimes will let new people or red cards enter if they aren't busy. There's also a mandatory $8 (recently raised from $7) tip per person that's dining. If you're not black card (highest tier) you usually have to wait 1-2 hours before even being called to get in line. Then you have to wait in line 20-45 additional minutes before being seated. Black cards get to skip the initial wait and go directly into the line to wait to be seated. Once you're seated you get to choose a soup, salad, or both and then wait for them to bring you the food. Then you have to wait again for your server or try to flag one down to place another round of orders. On average my family has noticed people usually only do the appetizer round, one or two main rounds, and dessert because of the long service times. My family averages around 4-5 main rounds so we sit there for 3-4 hours sometimes with the majority of that time just waiting. The service is the main reason I say this place is hit or miss. If you get a nice and attentive server then everything goes great, but some of the servers are very noticeably there to just do the minimum amount for the job and that's it. Some servers will listen to your orders and actually tell you what additional options there are (like for the lobster tails we didn't even know until months later that we could get it with garlic butter or different sauces on top of it), and some even go and get the food to bring directly to you if they notice you've been waiting too long. Others.. will look around and barely hear what you're ordering and get the whole plate wrong or forget items for your order, resulting in you only getting 2 or 3 of what you asked for instead of the whole 4 that you're supposed to get. Or sometimes the opposite happens where they bring 2-3 of the same item on one plate and none of the other items that you ordered. It's already bad enough that most of the time, the servers only come to your table every 30-45 minutes so you're waiting an incredibly long time just to get one plate of food. The best times to go are definitely the weekdays very early right when they open (if you're not a black card) and the worst times are Fridays and weekends. They also have a recommendation to not have groups larger than 4 because they either split you up or you have to wait an extremely long time for a table to accommodate your group (because they only have 2 tables for large parties). They honestly should just turn the cafe dining room into an additional dining area for the buffet since that space goes wasted after they close and the cafe is literally right on the other side of the wall of the buffet. We've been coming here every other Friday for the drawings for almost 2 years now and the service is so inconsistent but the food is great! There has only been one time I was served a rancid lobster tail and almost threw up in the dining area. The menu changed last month and we tried the new tenderloin, it was absolutely perfect. But then a few weeks ago we tried it again and it was served well done even though we all asked for medium rare (and that's the last time we ever ordered the tenderloin because of that). One problem that happened the other day though was that the people doing the seating weren't seating any of the black card line. There were 8 tickets lined up and only 4 for the other line, but they kept seating the other side and kept putting up a new ticket. The group in front of us had 2 disabled people waiting for 30 minutes (and one of them was missing a leg). I felt so bad for that guy. The explanation was that "we have to follow the timestamp on the tickets to seat people fairly" but hello??? We're not blind. No one was being seated in the black card line for 30 minutes, even small groups of 2 that were in front of us started complaining. I don't understand the "timestamp" bs because we can actively see people getting in the other line, paying waaaay after the 3 groups ahead of us AND us, and still get seated before us. A group of 5 that paid after us in the general line got seated before any of the 3 groups ahead of us. It was just ridiculous but was a one off bad experience compared to the hundred we've had but thought I'd mention it. We still love coming to eat here because the food is great and consistent and almost all of us are black card members so we get food vouchers, but the service definitely needs some improvement or at least consistency equal to the food quality.

But every once in a while, hubby has a special request & we make it happen. His San Diego wish? Thursday night all-you-can-eat lobster dinner at 100s Seafood Grill Buffet. And when I say seafood extravaganza, I mean it. Beyond the lobster, there were crab legs, oysters, sushi galore (maki, nigiri & sashimi), lots of Asian specialties plus plenty of American comfort-food favorites to satisfy just about everyone. Now, full disclosure: my feelings were a little mixed, but hubby? He was living his absolute best life. The lobster is served cut in half & broiled, which unfortunately made the meat sort of melt into the shell. Each half ended up being only a couple bites & you did have to wait in line to grab one when fresh trays came out (one half per person at a time). That said, credit where it is due: the kitchen brought out lobster trays pretty regularly, so the wait never felt unreasonable. Meanwhile, hubby proceeded to eat what I can only describe as his body weight in crab legs. His only critique was that he prefers them served hot rather than cold, although the hot butter on draft definitely helped make up for that. I also appreciated how many unique dishes were available beyond seafood, making the buffet feel more interesting than your standard steam-table experience. And for me, the dessert section was a standout, especially the gelato station, which I may or may not have visited more than once. At $56.99, my personal preference would probably be to spend that money at a really good sushi restaurant. But if your dream scenario involves unlimited lobster, crab legs, oysters & a seafood feast where you can try a little bit of everything, this place absolutely delivers. Final verdict? Maybe not my personal seafood fantasy but hubby was THRILLED & sometimes that's the most important review of all. NOM NOM NOM #YUM
