Wow, what an experience! Came to Shipshewana to experience Amish Country and we were amazed! This tour truly surpassed our expectations. For $116 (for 2 people) my husband and I got a horse buggy ride through Amish country with a kind Amish gentleman as the guide. The horse buggy ride led us to an Amish farm where we got to tour, milk cows, feed a newborn baby calf, and taste fresh milk. The tour was just amazing. The community was unbelievably welcoming to us, they all explained their culture, their beliefs, and taught us so much about their self sustainability. After the farm tour, we had dinner at an Amish family's house and I just want to say, from the bottom of our hearts, it was a once in a lifetime experience. The family was very kind and it was a wonderful experience to share. The food was excellent, too! Overall, I can't recommend this experience enough. We did the regular buggy tour with Amish gentleman John and Bob (the horse). That's a quick loop with a few historical tidbits and any questions you've ever had you can ask them here. 6.00 Then we ran around town all day and came back at 4pm to do the dairy farm tour. We ended up driving to the farm because they were booked up for the three buggies. The farm is about two miles away and since we were there first, we got to meet the horsies and cows and goats, take some pics, pet and love them. Once the tour started, you get to see where random tasks are done around the farm, then we got to feed a baby calf and try some fresh milk. THEN WE GOT TO MILK A COW!!! It was fantastic. I'll never forget the feeling, I know it's weird but I felt really calm and happy leaving this farm and this Amish community as a whole. I would recommend to anyone to spend a couple days in this area and unwind. read more

I'm really shocked at how rude and unprofessional the man was. I can by and asked about pricing and he showed me the buggy they had. I told him I would be right back with my family as we were looking for the location of the buggy rides. In the time I walked to my car and back he was gone. We thought he might of taken someone else on a ride so we waited over an hour as the sign still said open, but I have the feeling he wanted to leave an hour early so he gtfo before I returned. I just don't understand why he would up and leave like that or wouldn't just say he's closed early so we wouldn't of wasted our time sitting there waiting. read more

I'd been to Shipshewana many times and had several buggy tours, but this time, I decided that I really wanted to do a dinner and a more in-depth tour. I saw the reviews for Buggy Lane and decided to go with them. First, I corresponded with them regarding the arrangements in advance. They were always quick to answer my emails and questions. I did the full tour with the dairy farm tour and dinner afterwards. John was a wonderful tour guide, and his brother-in-law, Dean, I believe, who owns the dairy farm was also very friendly. I was able to feed a horse and a calf, milk a cow and we sampled raw milk. John also told us about how the farm runs, and the differences between how it is now compared to when he was growing up. There was a family in our group, and as they all came in one car, John asked if I could take him back to his house & then back into town afterward. I felt very special that he asked me. On the way, I got my own private tour of who lived where and some more information about the area. Dinner at Elaine and John's house was wonderful -- better than any of the restaurants I'd been to. Elaine was absolutely charming. She made us a lovely dinner of salad, meatloaf, chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes and chicken cutlets. There was also some jello and custard pie for dessert. Elaine showed us some special shells she's collected, and they both made us feel very welcome in their home. We even got to meet Elaine's mother, and Elaine & John's niece joined us for dinner. Everyone associated with Buggy Lane Tours was so friendly, and quite willing to answer any questions that we asked. If you're looking for a tour, definitely choose them! read more

Such a fun tour! It started out with a horse and buggy ride, went to the farm and got to feed horses, a baby calf, milk cows, pet animals, did a tour of the barns, and it ended in homemade ice cream. Everyone was super friendly as well. Great for all ages including kids! read more

The 5 Star Tour was amazing! Our buggy driver took us out of the downtown area of Shipshewana and onto the backroads, telling us about the history of the area. Then we arrived at a dairy farm and got to experience feeding a baby calf, then milking a cow and drinking fresh cow's milk. Afterwards, there was a traditional Amish dinner at John and Elaine's farm. The food was just absolutely delicious! The chicken and meatloaf were so tasty, as was the Amish version of spaetzle. They also had three different pies, and everyone had a slice of each -- all three tasted really good! The night ended with the singing of traditional hymns. It was a wonderful evening spent experiencing a brief snippet of Amish life. Highly recommended! You'll have to call or email in advance to make reservations. read more

Daughter and I took the buggy ride tour to an Amish dairy farm. Our driver, John, incredibly gracious in sharing about the Amish people, farm, and their lovely town. My daughter and I loved the experience and highly recommend everyone to do the farm tour option. I was so amazed how well trained the horse is (John did whistle commands for the horse to do maneuvers). John and Elaine were fabulous at what they do! They run Buggy Lane Tours and were so accommodating for us as we called the night before wondering if there was any availability for their 5 star tour the next day. He said he would chat with his wife and call me back. He called back the next morning and said they would welcome us to the 5 star tour which consists of a 20 minute horse and carriage ride to a nearby working Holstein dairy farm and a home cooked family style Amish-Mennonite Thrasher Dinner at their home. We were thrilled! It was a beautiful day for a horse a buggy ride. Once at the farm we could immediately see cows, able to feed and pet horses and kittens. We were led into the barn and John told us about horse shoes, and other tools they used on the farm. He showed us how they processed wheat and straw while correlating Bible thoughts with it. We were able to pet and feed newborn calves, actually milk the cows, taste the fresh milk. It was amazing! We rode the horse and buggy back to town with a personal commentary along the wAy with the buggy driver. We then hopped in our cars and drove a couple of miles to John and Elaine's home where there was a tub of warm water, a bar of soap and a towel waiting for us. John explained reason they called it a thrashing dinner. 10-12 families would help each other thrash their fields and they would thrash all morning and the women would get together and prepare the noon meal together. The men, dirty and dusty, would come to eat and the tub soap and water would be in the yard for them to clean up. He demonstrated how to use the water to leave it as clean as possible for the next man. We all got to try it. After that, Elaine had the table set and welcomed us to her dining room. A total of 17 if us lucky souls. Many of us strangers to each other. We came in our own little groups and ended as friends. The food was fabulous. Started with a tossed salad with a creamy white dressing, next homemade bread...delicious homemade bread with butter, Amish peanut butter, which is peanut butter with marshmallow fluff and syrup, and blackberry jam. Then came the sides...mashed potatoes, gravy, chicken and noodles, green beans. Main course...crunchy fried/baked chicken and a pan fried ham...so good. Three different pies for dessert, butterscotch, apple and peach. You will be offered more than you will be able to eat, so go with an appetite. Truly one of the most memorable and enjoyable experiences I've had. John and Elaine, thank you so much for your gracious hospitality. read more

Great company and very personal tour. We first went by buggy to a working dairy farm where we got to feed the horses, bottle feed a newborn calf, drink fresh milk and much more ... very informative tour that John took us on ... after the tour we headed to John and Elaine's home for the most wonderful Amish dinner. My wife and I booked a tour for our vacation last week as we spent one night in the Shipshewana area. We really enjoyed the experience. We did the full package that included the buggy tour, farm tour, and dinner with our guide John and his Amish family. We are not quite "city folk", but we have never experienced a working dairy farm before (we fed horses and baby goats, milked a cow, and got to try fresh milk and homemade ice cream). We had a great time and learned so much about the farm and the Amish way of life. Dinner with John and Elaine was great. There were 5 other couples that joined us, and Elaine had a wonderful dinner waiting. The conversation at dinner was very educational and enjoyable. This was a wonderful experience that I recommend to everyone. read more
