Nice location close to my house, friendly service, fancy machinery and boutiquey vibes. And, at my first visit, I left with a shocking 7 new cavities to fill -- shocking because prior to that visit, I had knowledge of no cavities. No pain. I trusted her advice, and had the first 2 worked on right away. I left with rough-feeling teeth, from whatever filling material was used, and she said it would smooth out... That's when the pain and sensitivity started. I decided not to go back, because I simply couldn't afford to have my whole mouth feeling like the newly-worked on top corner of my mouth. Ultimately I chose to visit another dentist, and let them take new X-rays. No cavities found. read more

I had been a patient here for over a year. I originally started going here as a cash customer for dental cleanings and felt the service was on par with the price. I even recommended that my wife switch her dentist to Bull CIty Dental last month. However, after our last experience, we will not be going back. As a cash customer, I was charged ~$200 for two cleanings + xrays, which I was fine with. After my wife switched over, she added me to her dental insurance since the additional premium was roughly equal to paying cash for the cleanings. I confirmed with Bull City that her dental insurance was accepted prior to making the appointment for both of us, to which they replied "Yes". Fast forward a month later, we receive a bill in the mail saying we owed an additional $114 on top of $372 our insurance paid out to them, bringing the total cost for our cleanings to $488, roughly double what I paid just a couple of months before. I reached out to bull city dental about this and they claim that while my insurance is accepted, they are out-of-network and thus can charge whatever rate they want. I confirmed that at no point prior to the cleanings did they mention that this would be an out-of-network visit and that I would be hit with this significant up charge. This kind of billing practices is at best negligent and I am deeply disappointed in their customer service. read more

I am so thankful that I chose Bull City for my dental needs when moving to Durham. Dr. Kemp is, first and foremost, kind. She makes thoughtful suggestions to help improve your smile and delivers results. I used to get so anxious for cleanings but Bianca, my hygienist, is an angel in scrubs. She is patient, gentle, and easy to engage with, all of which make for a comfortable experience. Tameka is extremely competent when it comes to handling appointments and insurance. Even when I changed insurances over in the new year, she had all my information ready to go and I never had to lift a finger. Dr. Kemp was great for cleanings, but after getting my first filling from her, I am not going back nor would I ever recommend her. She told me I needed a cavity treated on a tooth that was completely pain free (which I get happens a lot), but after her treatment, it was in EXCRUCIATING pain. She claims some of the bacteria are microscopic (aren't all??), and caused her to not get all of it -- or that the filling went too deep and is now irritating the nerve. Needless to say, she recommended immediately that I get a root canal, now costing me well over $1000. I got a second opinion who told me to give it at least a month to see how it goes (unlike Dr. Kemp's rash advice), but unfortunately the pain is still so bad that a root canal is now in my future - for a tooth that never bothered me and whose treatment was completely mismanaged (I've now had 2 other dentists tell me the filling went way too deep). And now I'm in the hole for a ton of $$, even after insurance kicks in. Beyond that, they overcharged me for previous work, and only after I asked about it did they refund me. Had I not asked, they would have kept my overpayment dollars. Nope, no thanks. This is not worth any fancy interior or timely appointments. read more

I feel comfortable, all my procedures have been great and I can not recommend them enough. I had Invisalign and teeth removal and could not be more happy with the results. I absolutely LOVE Bull City Dental!!! Everyone is so kind and personable. I never have to wait longer than 10 minutes to be seen. Dr. Kemp is the BEST! She always asks how my family and I are doing, and she always answers my questions very plainly, yet thoroughly. The modern decor makes it feel like I'm ANYWHERE but a dentist office. The layout of the office is very open while still achieving patient privacy. To top it all off...the overhead music choice is fabulous! Not good, because of a non durable root canal. I will advise anyone needing a root canal to first look into whether or not the root canal is needed and if so, how long would that root canal be good. Another advise is, do not let the dentist tell you that you need a root canal unless you have consulted another dentist/orthodontist. in July of 2021, I was TOLD that I needed a root canal on tooth #31, mind you, I did not go there complaining about this tooth, but, the dentist Ms. Lady dentist, took it upon herself to advice on a root canal. She contacted her partner orthodontist from another location, and root canal was done on July of 2021. Not a year had passed, when that root canal/crown came off and I had to go to a local dentist to get it glued in place but not without an advice from this dentist that the crown was too small for the the space and that is why it felt off. Needless, to say, one two years to the date (07/11/23) that tooth got extracted, but yet, I spent over a thousand dollars on a root canal on a tooth that could have probably been better off extracted for under $200.00. One of the best dentist experiences I've ever had. Everyone was friendly, helpful, and professional, from the receptionist to the hygienist to the dentist herself. I was fairly anxious going in, but left super relieved and was extremely happy with the work they did. I requested an appointment early in the week and they were able to accommodate me within just a few days, and fit both a cleaning and bonding into a single morning. I tried to give this place a chance. Minority owned and mainly female staffed. The hygienist was amazing, super sweet and gentle, explained everything she did before she did it and told me why she was doing it. She stated to me that the dentist might request for fillings due to grooves in my teeth. The dentist comes back and talks dental jargon with the hygienist and tells me I need 8+ fillings. Never explains that they were for cavities. I had never before had a filling at the age of 24. They happened to have an opening right after my cleaning and I said why not, I am already here. The dentist sits down opens my mouth and sticks a swab with what seemed to be a numbing agent on my gums. I stop her immediately and ask wait will this involve needles??? Since I vasovagal (pass out) with needles if not completely laying flat. She laughs and say yes. Now I am very upset but half of my mouth is numb and I feel like I have no choice but to keep going. Being a health care provider myself I ALWAYS explain any and everything I am doing to a client before I do it. How could she not take the 3 seconds it takes to explain what she is doing. After my first filling I went to my orthodontist and they told me they got my records and that my dentist told them I had a couple more cavities they recommend I fill. CAVITIES???! No one explained anything to me about a cavity. I just assumed it was the grooves the hygienist told me about. Knowing I can't get orthodontia done with out my fillings, I try and hurry through the fillings. Telling myself it won't be as bad the next time, it was just a bad day. After 3 weeks, my first filling is very painful even without any stimulation. I went in for my second set of fillings and they told me they had to redo my first set. I believe it was a dental assistant who I spoke with first, that explain that my teeth didn't set correctly. I waited for the dentist to come in, who rushed in, sat down and immediately stuck a numbing swab in my mouth. With out warning.... SHOT.... At this point I am angry. That wasn't just a bad day, it's a bad dentist!!! After fixing my first set of fillings and almost finishing my second they realized that I needed another filling on my top right teeth which they were currently working on... Sooo close to getting my braces, I say why not go in for my third set and just get it over with. Any time in the past I have gone into the office they had NEVER made me or anyone wait outside. My appointment is at 12:30, without thinking I show up at 12:15. The front desk lady asks me "name?", I tell her my name and she asks "is your appointment at 12:30" I respond "yes ma'am" to what she responds "Well come back at 12:30". As you can read from above my experience with this place was already not the best but I've never had an issue like this to be made feel so small. Thankfully I was with a friend who just walked around outside with me for 15 minutes. I came back @ 12:32. When I open the door the lady yells "stop" and just starts waving to outside, like get back out. There was a customer standing infront if the desk but again never have they made me wait outside. I was so upset that I immediately in tears went outside and called a different dentist office to see how soon they could get me in. When they told me they could see me the next day, I opened the door and said I will be canceling my appointment. Did I mention all of my fillings are now in excruciating pain when I had NO previous tooth pain to coming here.I have read in reviews I am NOT the only person to experience this with them!! I am upset that I had to experience something like this, never would I thought things like this actually happen. read more

When I first walked by this spot and saw that there was a dental office, I was disappointed there was yet another storefront downtown taken up by offices. But then, my tooth cracked. And I hate the dentist, so I avoided going. I also ditched my last dentist in North Durham after a botched root canal (end result, tooth pulled). So when this tooth started to hurt, I was pretty stoked to realize I could be seen downtown, where I work. When I emailed about an appointment, I not only got a response promptly but they called me as well (important, as I likely would've just kept avoiding going). I went in for an assessment- the appointment was easy to get, it was quick and everyone was so nice. Today I returned to Bull City Dental to have the problem tooth pulled. I was in and out in less than 30 minutes. It was probably the most painless dental experience I've had. On my way out I made appointments for cleanings for my whole family. I think Durham is lucky to get such a talented dentist right in downtown! read more

If I could give Dr Kemp and Bull City Dental 10 stars, I wholeheartedly would. I initially chose to establish dental care here after hearing enthusiastic praise for Dr Kemp and her establishment from colleagues, which were echoed in the reviews I read. My experience has been nothing short of exceeding my already high expectations. Dr Kemp and her staff have been paragons of professionalism, expertise, and care. I had extenuating circumstances arise shortly after I began the Invisalign process that necessitated I discontinue treatment, and after doing a deep dive on the internet, had extreme anxiety about whether I had any chance of getting my money back. To my great relief, Dr Kemp (and her entire staff, but particularly Liza) graciously worked with me and I was able to refund almost all of the lump sum I had paid upfront (ie everything minus the cost of the office visit, and the fee Invisalign charged for having already manufactured the first set of aligners). This is an honest, caring, and competent doctor and establishment and I couldn't recommend them anymore highly. read more

Had issues with a filling (this has never happened before) and they tried to charge me for the make-up work many months later--the work they ensured was going to be no charge to me at the time of the appointment. Completely unprofessional communication from administrative staff and seems like there was a lot of miscommunication between the dentists / staff. The administrative rep later called to apologize, but this was after having a completely rude and stressful exchange regarding a bill and my insurance. Yikes...Getting seen quickly is not worth the exemption from good communication and care. Seeking a new dentist's office and would definitely not recommend. read more

I had some serious tooth pain over the weekend and called right away Monday morning. They got me in that morning for a consult and then that afternoon for a root canal. I was told what would happen and why. Everyone was friendly and professional. I walked away that afternoon with no tooth pain. I even went back to work that same day. The entire staff is very professional. Dr. Audrey Kemp has been extremely helpful in providing dental services related to complications from my previous radiation therapy. Dr. Kemp and her staff have also been patient and supportive in providing dental services to my adult son, who is on the Autism Spectrum. The office is located in downtown Durham and has ample street parking and access to a nearby parking garage. Dr. Kemp has been my dentist for about two years and her entire office is outstanding. Everyone is friendly, kind, prompt, and professional at all times. The space itself is also very relaxing, with dim lighting and comfy chairs. The hygienist even hands you a hot lavender towel at the end of a procedure. When I chipped a tooth at 4pm one day, the receptionist got me in to have it fixed at 8am the next day. Couldn't be happier with Bull City Dental.
