Best veterinary clinic. We are very sad the Dr. Craig Elbell passing. We will still be going there because of his wife Dr. Leslie .

This is probably the saddest review that I will be doing. I came to this vet spot because my dog was having serious health issues due to her age. Bulverde Bexar Veterinary was recommended due to pricing, and and their walk-in policy. Basically, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, they allow for walk-ins on a first come, first serve basis. It was a very long wait because we arrived much later than their 8 am opening, and there were quite a few people ahead of us, but the place's system is pretty good system. They get your name, phone number and give you a call when they are ready for your pet. The place is clean, staff is very helpful and kind, and their prices were better than many other places. Long story short, this was a very sad visit, but it was handled very well, and with compassion. I can't recommend them enough. read more

Exceptional client care! It's been six years now that I have been bringing my pomeranian in for annual check-ups. Unlike almost every other dog, my pomeranian loves to visit the vet. The location is out of the way from where I reside, but everything else outweighs that one con. The service here is very effective and efficient. As a customer with tons of love for my pomeranians' well-being - we are both taken care of here at Bulverde Bexar Veterinary Clinic - I always leave here with my mind at ease and Dr. Craig Elbel and his wife always ensure the best care for my pom. & YES, Covid-19 precautions are up to par! I recommend bringing in your cat or dog early in the morning to get your name on the list to be seen in a good timely manner (since Covid-19, one visitor at a time can be seen) and if you work an 8am-5pm job, its best to get your name on that list so you can be done with that and right back too work! read more

This is my baby girl Penelope. I've waited almost 4 weeks to write this review. She died the weekend of Mother's Day. I drove her to the clinic because she was vomiting blood. My drive is 45 mins away. It was a Saturday. I walked in a few minutes before 2 pm. They close at 3:00 on Saturdays. I told Courtney her problem. She told me they couldn't see her, then walks in Dr Leslie. I tell her what's going on with baby girl. She tells me. "I'm leaving and cannot treat her. She requires an IV. I can't commit to treating her!" They were all very rude and knew my dog was critical yet turned us away! I had to drive another hour to an ER Clinic then wait another hour for her to be seen. She died that day. I can't tell you the pain I'm still in after losing her. I don't know Dr Leslie would have treated her if she would have lived but another 2 hours was crucial in her condition. Writing this review has been a difficult decision. I've have been taking my dogs to Dr Craig for over 25 years before he was married! He was always caring with my dogs. I've Refered many people but no more! The staff now is always very rude! It's not the same kind of care my dogs use to get years ago. Dr Leslie (wife) has an attitude with all the dog parents that go in. This was and will be my last visit here. Leslie, You refused to treat my dog and now she's dead I only have her ashes. I hope the hour that you were supposed to be open and you closed was worth it! I read in another review y'all won't treat people's dogs who have written a bad review. Great experience! They let you wait in the car with your dog rather than in a crowded waiting room and call you when they are ready. The vet was personable and seemed to care much more than the corporate owned clinics that are just focused on profit. Would definitely recommend! We recently had a traumatic pet emergency with our Pomeranian, which was after hours. We were able to get a hold of Dr. Elbel to explain our emergency and if it were not for their previous commitment at a later event I believe they would have stayed late to assist our Pomeranian. However, he recommended a Emergency Veterinarian Clinic (EVC) in Stone Oak who would be better prepared for over night care which was needed. (That experience is a separate review). We have been going to see Dr. Elbel and his staff for years. Dr. Elbel is awesome and very good at what he does. He may not be the most talkative person, but the information he gives you is good and they are very reasonable. His approach is somewhat "Old School" but he is very knowledgeable and provides excellent care. Unfortunately for us, we live in a rural area and to date, all three of our small breed dogs have been attacked on our property by different neighboring animals. Dr. Elbel truly saved the lives of all three as each of these three events were very serious. If you live in the Spring Branch, Bulverde, Comal Area, I highly recommend this clinic for all your pet needs.I do recommend that you prepare to wait. as it is a walk-in, first come first served clinic. The staff is very nice but the Doctor could use a lesson on how to treat animals & people.

I took my 12 year old kitty in for a severe skin rash today (a Wednesday around 2 pm). I hadn't taken her to them in over ten years but they still had her old records and mine on file. While the vet who helped us was a little abrupt, she was direct and efficient. The staff at the front desk was super helpful and talked with me in detail about the various flea treatments they have available. I was able to make a good, informed decision (especially since I had also previously compared many of them online). The office itself is well lit, spacious and clean as is the restroom. We were out of the office in about half an hour. Best of all, they are super affordable! Steroid shot and 8 mo. supply of high quality multi-flea meds for $137. Can't be beat! I first heard about Dr. Elbel from my daughter-in-law who took her babies here before they moved out to LaVernia and she liked the vet and pricing a lot. She forwarned me about Dr. Elbel's bedside manner, not the most sociable she'd ever been to, so I was prepared and ultimately surprised because Dr. Elbel was just as nice, informative and easy to talk to as any vet I've ever been to. I took my Miniature Schnauzer in the first time I went and the staff took me back in no time, prepared the shots and heartworm test, then Dr. Elbel came in to administer the shots and test. In and out without too much delay and the prices were exceptional. The second time I went in I took my pit bull for her shots and heartworm test/meds. Dr. Leslie performed this time, and she was so sweet to my girl in settling her down and getting us in and out as quickly as possible without giving me the impression she was in a hurry, again pricing very reasonable. The third time was to take my pit bull back with a lump that developed between her shoulder blades that concerned me. It was a little before 1:00pm and I was the only person waiting, Dr. Elbel came into the waiting room and when he saw me asked me what was going on with my girl, and proceeded to come over and sit next to me. He asked me a lot of questions about Meadow, and said let's go into the exam room, Dr. Leslie came in also to assist. Dr. Elbel spent at least 30 minutes with us, checking and rechecking the lump, taking her temp, weighing her, etc. Dr. Elbel gave her a steroid and amoxicillin for 7 days and asked me to call them the following Thursday to see how she is doing. All in all, I left with the feeling my baby had been well taken care of, as well as assuring me she was going to be fine. I cannot say enough good things about these doctors and their staff! Dr. Elbel and Dr. Leslie are the only vets my girls will be seeing from now on! read more

The lady that answers the phone at this place is absolutely horrendous. She always acts like you are really putting her out when you need something. Thank goodness for the two docs; otherwise, this place would surely go out of business. It does happen to be the most affordable vet in town, and I do really like the doctors. They are very thorough and aren't trying to just bill you for unnecessary things. I trust them. A friend recently recommended this place to us, so we gave it a go. We previously were using Cibolo Canyons Vet, who I thought were great, but I am always looking to get the best care (and let's be honest, the best price) for my furbaby that I can. The location is lovely, really out in the middle of nowhere, and they have a multitude of farm animals on the property. Parking is plentiful and though this clinic is walk-in only (appointments for surgical procedures only), there were only 2 people ahead of us when we went in on a Saturday morning. The front desk personnel seemed a little flustered about registering my dog as a new patient, but overall the check-in was pretty smooth. Our visit that day was only for a routine exam, to update his vaccinations, and to get a new prescription for his heartworm medications. The doctor came in to perform the heartworm test and ask what we needed... honestly I just wanted a medical professional to give him a good once-over and make sure everything looked/felt good. He listened to his heart and gave him a quick look... I guess I am just used to other vets really giving a good thorough exam, and I felt this doctor's exam was a bit short for my liking, but I was kind of prepared for that going in. He is just kind of an old school vet and a man of very few words. They were offering a special rebate on his heartworm medications and (unbelievably!) the final cost was even less than what I've paid on 1800-PET-MEDS. The total for the exam, his new prescription and the vaccinations was around $100. I was shocked at how cheap it all was. Would definitely recommend! read more

The staff here is wonderful. Never have I had anyone be mad or rude to me. They love my dogs and treat them like they were there own. They do not take appointments and the wait is lengthy at times. I have been going here for several years, and really like it. The only reason for a 4 star rating and not a 5 is due to the no appointments... If you plan properly, you can be in and out in about an hour. I have, however, waited for nearly 2 hours to be seen. BUT Dr. Elbel is awesome and very good at what he does. He may not be the most talkative person, but the information he gives you is good. AND they are very reasonable. Our Princess is back at home recovering thanks to the wonderful staff at Bulverde Bexar Veterinary Clinic. For those of you looking for an excellent clinic for your fur babies, PLEASE consider BBVC. We discovered Princess had a pea size lump on the back of her neck about a year ago. We took her to Cibolo Canyon Vet Hospital off TPC and were told it was a fatty cyst, nothing to be concerned about. Over the past 2 months it rapidly grew to a golf ball size so I took her back and was told it had to be removed. We were quoted a cost of $657-$1357 and were sent home with antibiotics. Unfortunately it began to rupture while I was out of town so on the recommendation of my sons girlfriend they rushed her to BBVC. Not only did they drain her cyst, they took care of her ears and scheduled surgery for today. Total cost $220. ALWAYS GET A SECOND OPINION!!! They are truly in it for the animals. Good veterinary work and reasonable prices but staff has a really POOR attitude when it comes to dealing with customers. This vets office could be so much better than it currently is. We've lived in the area for just over a year now and have multiple visits behind us. This isn't just a case of a few rough or busy days but rather a pretty much ongoing issue. BBVC could really use some sensitivity training, an office manager with better organizational skills, better in-house coordination and communication, and some customer service classes for their front desk staff and vet techs. read more

This clinic did everything to diagnose a bowel blockage in my golden retriever, did his surgery, treated him like a king. Very scary time as he is my baby and the whole staff was wonderful. Called to make an appointment, I was told to be there before 3 pm. I had my dog as a new patient, with my 7 year old in tow. The vet was fine, but the front desk employees and a possible tech was very rude. I did not bring my care credit card, since I was in a rush to get to their office. Instead of helping me, I was embarrased and belittled in the middle of the waiting room. Their words "don't you have another card? You knew you were coming, why didn't you bring it? We're going to have to take everything back." I called merchant services myself after talking to customer service. I'm not even the merchant! Finally, after talking to care credit myself on my phone and passing them the operator it was taken care of. One of the worst customer service I have experienced! Never again! read more

They take care of all the white people first (sorry for noticing) me an my girlfriend are both Hispanic, an have been here for 2 hours first outside in the car and now inside waiting for another 30 minutes or so an they haven't even asked what's wrong with our dog. All at the same time multiple white people have came in after us an instantly gotten help and their dogs have been takin care of. Our sweet dog was dropped off at 8am. When they brought her out to me at 4:30, she was totally out of it. Her tongue was hanging out the side of her mouth. She wasn't wagging her tail, she urinated a large amount in the car. I took her back in, very concerned. That's when everything went south. The woman employee did not tell me why her tongue was hanging out the side of her mouth. I asked her 3 times, but she was on the computer and talking to several people. I had reminded her that our dog has a murmur. She said, "Oh, that could be why." I asked them 6 times what time she had her procedure. They wouldn't answer because they didn't know. They finally said, "early afternoon." I finally told the woman that I wanted to talk to the doctor. She said, " I AM one of the doctors!" I said, "Can you look on her chart and tell me what time she had her procedure,". She said, "What did she have done?" I replied, "She had her teeth cleaned and She's been here since 8am. She should not still be 'out of it'." "Well will give her a shot to wake her up." Never could tell me what time they cleaned her teeth. The male doctor came out and I can't begin to tell you how odd and unprofessional he was. I told him, "Our dog has a murmur and is 10. You've had her 8 1/2 hours, she hasn't eaten in 24 hrs, and y'all brought her out like you just now finished cleaning her teeth. She was NOT ready to go home! She urinated a large amount in the car, which she never does, she wasn't walking normally, no tail wagging, her tongue was hanging out the side of her mouth." He kept saying, "She's fine now, see? Her teeth are nice. What else do you want me to say?" I said, if you cleaned her teeth at 1pm, why was she still like that at 4:30?" He never did answer that. The female doctor butted in and said, "You didn't call us." Huh??? My daughter was on speaker phone. When she arrived, I went to the car. They lied to her about several things and my daughter knew it. The male doc also had a conversation in the waiting area with a man. They made a joke about a newborn calf dying because the mother cow stepped on it, broke his leg. "Animals are stupid. Yeah, cows are stupid, that's why I eat'em." Totally unprofessional. We never found out if our dog had difficulty recovering from anesthesia due to her murmur, OR if they had just cleaned her teeth late and brought her out too soon. They were busy, an employee was rushing out to go somewhere, they even asked me, "Now what did your dog have done today?" They were nice to my daughter, but not honest. The male doc was nervous. He just kept saying, "She's fine now." read more

I took my 5 year old miniature schnauzer yesterday and walked in without an appointment. I was immediately greeted by the friendly front desk staff who signed me in. Even though there were 4 other families ahead of me, I was there for approximately one hour, which included my pet's exam and treatment. It definitely has that small town, country vet feeling, which made it feel very personal and friendly. Even all of the other pet owners were friendly and warm. I'll be taking my dog back in a few weeks for teeth cleaning and expect that experience to be a positive one as well. All around terrible experience. I went to this clinic because of the pricing. You get what you pay for! My regular vet charges an outrageous amount of money for a teeth cleaning ($900) and I heard about this place from family, but I will never be back and neither will my family members. Leslie Degen is one of the vets and she has the worst attitude I've ever encountered at any clinic. Horribly unprofessional and rude. I'll call her Leslie because she doesn't deserve the respect of the title "Dr." My dog had been dropped off at 8am. Leslie brought my dog out after her cleaning at 4:30pm and my dog was totally out of it, with her tongue still limp and hanging out the side of her mouth (not panting). My mom who is basically my dog's co-owner picked her up and my dog was so out of it she didn't even recognize her. I'm no idiot, they had JUST done the procedure. She was loopy and peed all over the car. In other words, my dog had not been taken out since her procedure. My mom asked what time the procedure was performed and Leslie responded, "I'm not sure" then "early afternoon" then "2:00". She had no earthly clue. I asked my mom to go back in and get the details. I was on speaker phone by then. She requested paperwork and all she got was sass from the vets. It was clear that the procedure had just taken place. Most vet clinics would document the time, and also monitor the dog after the procedure and not send them home until they are sure they are ok coming out of anesthesia (not to mention my dog has a heart murmur). My mom also asked why her tongue had been hanging out like that. Leslie resounded, "she's just tired". Umm, ok? If she had her procedure hours ago, shouldn't she be a little more awake by now?? Idiot!! Or they must think we are. I was fuming as I listened to all of this on speaker phone. They gave her a shot "to wake her up". I wanted documentation of what that shot was. They wouldn't provide it to my mom so I went over there myself. Poor Dr. Elbel, he knew I was coming and was prepared with a speech. He kept rambling and didn't make much sense. Finally his tech cut him off and said "Stop, just let me tell her, the reason her tongue was hanging out is because we move the tongue over so that they don't choke on it as they're coming to after surgery". I pointed at her and said "THAT is what we've been wanting to hear, thank you". She has a brain and I'll say the other tech I've seen there was also great. Leslie the vet couldn't understand why I would want paperwork. What an idiot! I finally got it. She also lied to me about the conversation she had with my mom, which I was on speaker phone during that conversation so I know she's lying. Dr. Elbel seems nice but weird and can't get a point across to save his life, and Leslie is a word I won't type publicly. To top it off, my mom also overheard the male vet talking about one of their patients, a little calf that died because his mom stepped on him. He said "well animals are stupid, that's why I eat them." I thought that was so unprofessional considering it's his JOB to save animals. Disgusting place, disgusting vets. Beware!!!! read more

I have followed this clinic for at least 10 years and they are the best! The staff is wonderful and Doc Leslie and Doc Craig truly care about your pets! I have many adopted cats and dogs, and wouldn't be able to save this many without their help and reasonable prices.
