The sausage itself was yummy and the relish was good, but the balance of flavours was ruined by too much rocket leaves. We also shared a cronut: I like cronuts but this one was made cloyingly sweet by a topping of sugar icing. Too bad. Is it me? Are the flavours suited for a different taste? I really wanted to like this place. I'm hoping it was just an off-day. Aside from the food, the service was great. Staff were friendly. Their EFTPOS machine was unavailable so the manager just trusted me to pay later, which I did. Afterwards, we made a quick trip to the nearby market, and drove to the new ferry terminal for a look-see. These extra attractions made the journey nearly worth it.

Poached eggs, sausages, tomato, homemade relish, mushrooms, hash browns, crunchy buttery toast - it was the perfect way to start my morning. But what made it even better was the delicious berry smoothie I coupled with it. I highly recommend both these options, and according to my coffee connoisseur of a boyfriend, their coffee is pretty good too. The outdoor area of Catalina is beautiful - really spacious with big umbrellas and a courtyard, it's the perfect place to enjoy breakfast in the morning sun, or even a cold wine in the late afternoon. Just outside of Albert Park in CBD on a side street was this brunch bistro. The staff was immediately hospitable and was happy to help you. I ordered a mushroom omelette and iced Americano. After paying I sat down in a little reading nook, decorated with a couch, coffee table and BOOKS! How awesome! My coffee came out right away so I was able to enjoy it a bit before my meal came. My omelette came out on a skillet and was absolutely delicious. The vibe in this cafe was relaxed and welcoming - I could've stayed for hours! But I had errands to run, so alas I left. This will definitely be on my brunch to dos next time I'm in Auckland!

It was a few blocks away, and some hills worthy of mentioning (especially when you're pushing a 40-pound, 4-year-old uphill in a stroller), but anyway.... IT WAS SO WORTH IT! Wow, yum. I've had a lot of muesli since moving to New Zealand (it must be on every breakfast menu) and this one eeked it's way into first place. Really, it was right there at the top (see my picture). The coffees were awesome, though I don't prefer hot drinks to be served in glasses ('cuz they get too hot to hold) but I would have happily endured a few minor finger burns to gulp down that caffienated goodness. The only minor issue here was the seating (for us, with 2 kiddos). It's a lovely, long table through the center of the room (the decor is light and beautiful) but it's slightly socially awkward when everyone else is sitting at the far other end of the table (presumably, to avoid the kiddos). That said, however, one of the chefs was super nice to us, brought us lots of extra napkins (pre-emptively) and played peek-a-book with my 1-year-old while we ate and kept him occupied in the stroller. A high chair at the end of that beautiful table would surely have ruined the scene (but would have been helpful). In spite of these little things, our overall experience was excellent. Even my husband said so, and that's saying something :) We will happily come back here every time we are in the area.

Located just up from Glassons and right next to Renkon, this new cafe is easy to spot - you won't miss the bright blue building and outdoor seating. Inside, the decor is light, bright and you can either sit at the very long table in the middle or at the window bar, which would be great for people-watching! Now, onto the food! Couldn't believe how many options there were! From their breakfast and lunch meals (they cook everything fresh to order), to sweet treats from Amandine, raw cheesecakes from The Raw Kitchen, plus amazing paninis (I like the prosciutto one), sandwiches and muffins etc. And we can't forget the coffee! I have to be honest, I didn't actually try one...instead I saw Kombucha (organic probiotic tea) on the menu and had never tried it so I finally did! But if their coffee is as good as their Vulcan Lane store, then I'm sold! Strong, extra hot coffee, just how I like it! If you're not a coffee lover, they also serve an array of drinks, such as sodas, kombucha (as mentioned above), juices, smoothies (I've got my eye on the cacao one) and Hopt soda! Saying the only café in the area has "the best local coffee" is as redundant a title as an Upper Hutt Film Festival award. The café, including the "courtyard" looks like a long prison cell. The only "relaxing" area is in the entrance on ridged stools facing traffic and dirty shops. Two staff members ignored us and relaxed at the tables while a third fluffed about the kitchen before impolitely serving us. Ristretto isn't even on the menu. Affogato, cortardo and doppio are unknown. For a café named after a fancy coffee style, it would be presumed they would know others. Only those in desperate need of a caffeine fix should risk Ristretto.

The best I've ever had in my life! Crunchy on the outside, soft and moist on the inside - they are perfect. Ristretto boasts a really nice covered outdoor area behind the cafe, which also has great shutters that can be altered to protect you from gusty winds and rain if necessary. This area also offers a small playground for children, so they are entertained while you enjoy a delicious cup of coffee and catch up with friends. Ristretto's menu is also fantastic. A full blackboard menu offering everything from breakfasts, salads and light lunches is available, as well as a great selection of mouth-watering cabinet food can be found at Ristretto. Bonus: Most of the wait-staff are young, and they are very friendly. As a semi-regular customer, I am always pleased to see that they remember me and what I usually order. As for the menu, it has all the typical brunch fare plus a few extras including about FIVE, yes I said FIVE, different waffle dishes. However, when I went I couldn't get past all the good-looking cabinet food and being a sucker for baked goods of the savory variety I opted for the spinach and cream cheese muffin. It was served hot out of the tray and was moist, fluffy and god damn delicious. What else is pretty choice is that from 7am - 1030am on Weekdays they offer early bird specials. This includes deals such as eggs how you like them AND a reg coffee for only $9.90....genius! I guess the early bird really does catch the worm.

I didn't get any food, but the girls next to me got a waffle with a huge amount of whipped cream on it with berry sauce, which made me get quite substantial food envy. Nice chilled acoustic music plays in the background, and is quite audible outside as there is an outside speaker. When it is too sunny or raining, they put up a cover over the courtyard, so you can still enjoy your coffee in the atmospheric, cobblestoned space outside without getting too hot or rained on.
