Got into Valentine in time for a late dinner. Tired and hungry and no clue where to eat. Picked Bunkhouse because saw it while at stop light. What a great chance discovery! As soon as walked in the bright, clean atmosphere felt welcoming. Almost as soon as we set down we greeted and served quickly, efficiently, and friendly. Fast and friendly service. Our server got our order right and checked on us a few times to make sure everything was okay. This sounds weird but the broccoli side was the hit of the meal--charred on the flat top and seasoned perfectly. Good BBQ and pot roast, but the gravy was really salty and didn't taste homemade. My companion's steak salad was good, too. This is the only place in town we found with a selection of veggies, which is really nice when you're on the road and tired of starchy stuff. Very typical old fashioned diner-style. We had the roast beef dinner and a mushroom Swiss burger. The food was not bad, not great. The roast beef was acceptable but I did not care for the gravy at all- very salty and tasted artificial. The mushroom Swiss burger was better, but mushrooms were not fresh. I had the salad bar and again, it was ok but not great. This was one of the only places open for dinner for a sit down place on a Sunday night. It's definitely more of a bar than a restaurant. The music was very loud. Our food was very basic. We got the fried fish dinner. And it tasted good. We also got the taco salad. Which really had a very little lettuce and vegetables. You can get the taco salad with tortilla chips or in the fried taco bowl. Our waitress worked really hard to serve a lot of people in a short amount of time. If we return and are there on a Sunday night, we would probably choose a different venue if we want salad. read more

Don't judge a book by its cover! This is a great place. Not much to look at on the outside, nor the inside for that matter. Feels like a dark, local bar.... Service and food were fantastic. My friend and I bellied up to the bar just before dinner started. We had run the Sandhills Marathon and were starving for a meal. Our bartender who was extremely friendly helped take care of us with prompt drinks and meals. I was able to make the bacon cheeseburger into an 8oz instead of 6 to order it medium rare. Very friendly atmosphere and it felt like a roadside dinner that I might have ate at with my family back in the 80's. Background: On this trip to Valentine I was planning on eating at the Peppermill. I was challenged to try a medium-rare ribeye from them, and guaranteed that it would be the best steak I have ever had (a tall wager since I've had some amazing steaks across the US and around the world). I planned on taking on the challenge. However, after talking to a couple long-time Valentine residents about dining options, I was advised to give the Bunkhouse a try. So I did. Food: Me: chicken fried steak Offspring: chicken fried steak Spouse: Indian taco Impression: Since I had chicken fried steak on my last visit (to the Peppermill) (judged "meh" in my review on them), I figured I would compare apples-to-apples and try the Bunkhouse's chicken fried steak. The portion was smaller, but the price was also lower. I found the texture and flavor to be better. The gravy was better, also. The mashed potatoes were decent; not the best, but not bad. All-in-all, a pretty good meal. Not the best chicken fried steak I've had, but pretty good. Unlike my last visit to Valentine, I had the spousal unit and offspring in tow this time, and they also liked the Bunkhouse chicken fried steak. We all agreed that it was tender, had a nice crust, was not greasy, and had a good flavor. The spouse ordered the Indian tacos. We have had lots of Indian/Navajo fry bread and Indian tacos in the 4-corners region (NM, CO, AZ, UT), and we often make fry bread and sopaipillas at home, so she wanted to try them. She said it was good. Bottom line: I like the chicken fried steak here better. I don't know if I'll come back here next time I'm in town, but I don't have any complaints...maybe I will, or maybe I'll see if the Peppermill's medium-rare ribeye is the best steak I've ever had. One last bit of feedback for Bunkhouse: Put a big obvious sign up saying the bar/saloon side is open for dining! Had I not been told, I would not have known, and I would have gone to the competition. Had I not told a guy in the Bunkhouse parking lot that he could eat in the bar/saloon, he would have gone to McDonalds (he told me so). So advertise that you're open for dining in! read more

I had THE hardest time finding an Indian Taco in the off season as I made my way from Nebraska, through Hot Springs, SD and back through Nebraska to home. Because Indian Fry Bread is the bread of SD, I was on a mission to find some on this trip since I had never had it before. The first place was Dale's in Hot Springs, but it was closed. Apparently they have them at the cafe in Mt. Rushmore, but I missed that memo! Then, when we got to Deadwood, we drove several miles out of town TWICE to find one at Cheyenne Crossing, only to find out they are also closed Monday through Wednesday. I thought for SURE I could find one in Rapid City, but even a call to the tourism center said, nope, sorry, it's off season. My final option was to drive through the country to Valentine, where I finally got my Indian Taco. It was pretty good (the tomatoes were not very fresh). And it made my stomach ache. I'm not used to all that fried bread. But I got my Indian Taco. I was pleased as punch. So props to The Bunkhouse for having Indian Tacos! read more

Stopped on Sunday morning for breakfast. They had a buffet for $18.00 for adults. Kind of pricey and they wanted another $2.00 for orange juice. Besides this restaurant, one other(Raine motel- Indian food- which I should have gone to instead)is opened on Sundays in Valentine, Nebraska. Food was mediocre. We had the bunkhouse burger, one for me and my husband. Our server, was frustrated, and she acted as she was not happy to be there. She was the only server ( maybe this is why? But another arrived later, and her attitude was the same) Since the burger had two cheese, I asked only for the Swiss, she rolled her eyes- so- I still got the burger with both cheese in it. The burger was flavorless, came with potatoe chips, and with a Texas toast bread- some overcooked onions, and peppers maybe? Not sure- it was stuck to the bread- I did not eat any of the bread at all. Also, you would think that a burger automatically comes with lettuce and tomatoes- - not the case- she never offered or said that it came separate, or if we would like it- so I asked her no tomatoe and lettuce?? She said it's separate and I did not ask for it- ok- how would I have known? Well nonetheless she was not happy that I asked for me and my family too. -The burger meat tasted like it had fillers- -Also water is charged- it's Desani water for $1.00 - not sure if there was an option for tap- I did not want to ask the server, she was direct about the paid water... -There was an option for fries or onion rings, but it was $3 more- and when you paid for this, you got the choice you asked for minus the chips that it was supposed to come with Overall- maybe if the waitress would have been nicer and accommodating- even if the food was mediocre, I would have given a better rating. Well the place I wanted to eat was closed on Sunday so we went here to have a sandwich and hope to play pool. Ordered the French dip, or philly, not sure... had a lot to drink. Oh, drinks were good, pool table and juke box were great, and that sandwich was actually amazing. Fries were good, I think my buddy had a reuben, or a patty melt, not sure... had a lot to drink. I just got back from a road trip to the Sandhills, and I ate at this hometown cafe twice while in the Valentine area. It was a fantastic little diner. Both occasions were for breakfast. The first time I had a bacon and cheese omelet that came with toast, hash browns AND coffee. The omelet was great-nice and fluffy and the right amount of cheese and bacon. The hash browns were fresh potatoes, and they were cooked very well. All ringing in at $6.95! That's so freakin' cheap! The next time I had their Bunkhouse Breakfast Sandwich. DELISH. Wonderful eggs, cheese and bacon on a thick, buttered, toasted english muffin. This meal also came with hashbrowns and coffee. With a grand total coming to.....$5.95! You really just can't beat that price, especially when your coffee is included. I usually spend a buck fifty on coffee alone at some places. This is a great small town cafe.
