Good stop for a road weary traveler. The food is decent and reasonably priced. The staff is also friendly.

Excellent meal of fish fillets and fries and the Indian taco my husband had was delicious.

Place was nearly empty upon my arrival. The food was very good. I ordered the Indian Taco with all the fixings. The only downside to this meal ... the building itself. What a dump of a restaurant. I suppose it could be due to the size of the town and location compared to other towns. read more

From the moment we walked in this place, we were ignored and dismissed. We came in a large group, but we had called ahead. Many other people were attended to before we were. We had to ask to get served. We were never even greeted, smiled at, told thank you. Our waitress seemed very inconvenienced by us. We remained polite and upbeat, but It was difficult. The table we sat at was dirty. I took the tip left there and the dirty glasses up to the bar for them and they did not seem to even care or appreciate it. When we asked for something to wipe the table, they took a napkin off the table and picked up the visible piece of food, but that was it. Once we did get to put our order in, our food came fast. We were never checked on or asked for refills. The place was a little busy, but that doesn't excuse the rude treatment. When it slowed down, the waitress still didn't check on us or get us refills until we flagged her down. The food here is very good but don't expect good service. I've never been to a restaurant where the severs don't ask if you food is okay or don't automatically refill your water glass or don't bring cream with your coffee. If it weren't for the good country-style food at reasonable prices this place would see only one star. read more

Best steak and eggs I have had in Nebraska for breakfast. French Dip also a great lunch menu item with appropriately sliced beef making up for not using a baguette. Dinner and breakfast steaks are cooked appropriately to order. Indian Tacos also a reputable lunch and dinner item. This is a good old fashioned Sandhills eating establishment. read more

I agree with previous reviewers that low expectations should be set before you go, and then you'll be fine with your experience. Our waitress was GREAT! The food was fine (not great/not horrible). Salads are made with iceberg lettuce, but dressings are done in house. Chicken strips are comparable to Tyson brand frozen strips, but they're served hot and again the house dressings for dipping are great. Also had a baked potato which you cant really mess up. Best burger I've had in a long time. Courteous waitress and fair price. My husband had the meatloaf sandwich and loved it.

I can't believe this place is getting 3 stars! :( Keep in mind this a small town restaurant, so don't expect the Cheese Cake Factory... I had the Philly and it was really good! Although the staff is friendly and the pie tastes good, the food is ordinary and the atmosphere isn't great.

Wonderful welcoming hometown atmosphere great food and staff to match! I have not been here to eat since September and the waitress I had then recognized me and greeted me as if I was an old friend. The cafe is like going to grandma's house. At night the saloon is open so this place truly has something to offer to everyone. Truck parking in the back so drivers have a place to relax and stretch the wrinkles from there bellies too! read more

The food was really good. I was actually surprised. I had their 12 oz steak and they cooked it right. The cheese and broccoli soup was my favorite part of the meal. So if you're passing through Valentine as I was, this is a great choice over the McDonalds down the street if you have the time to stop. read more

We stopped here while in Valentine, NE on our Summer vacation. It's a great place for family style eating, and the prices are right in-line for a restaurant of this type. We had this place recommended to us by the Trade Winds Motel people, and were glad we went here. I personally had a great burger, and everyone in our party was satisfied with what they ate. There are "fancier" places to eat in Valentine, NE, but this does the trick if what you need is a nicer-type restaurant, along with a family friendly atmosphere and affordable prices. I would recommend the Bunkhouse, and eat there again in the future. read more

If you go here stick with BEEF items! Their beef dishes are generally good but their other food is lacking. Ordered the special that was supposed to be fettuccine Alfredo- the sauce wasn't seasoned at all and the texture made me think it was unseasoned milk gravy. Thick and clumpy, just no. Getting seated was fairly quick as the restaurant was maybe 1/4 full. The food was delivered by a different person than took the order. When we looked for water refills and then finally gave up and wanted the check the waitress was no where to be found. After waiting another 15 minutes snagged the hostess (possible owner?) who said she'd check on it. Come to find out that the waitress has left for the night. Have eaten here several times when traveling and service has always been so/so. Pricing is cheap though. Finally, what the heck kind of place tells you AFTER you've eaten and paid that you're not allowed to use their bathroom! Again, hostess/owner said we couldn't use the bathroom before getting back on the road because we'd disturb the diners in the other side of the space. read more

Ate Breakfast here on our way out to Sturgis. This was a great little breakfast spot. Food was good with great service. Ham and Cheese Omelette was delicious. Would definitely stop here for breakfast next time I'm traveling through. read more

We stopped for our midday meal on a roadtrip from California to South Dakota. After several disappointing stops along the way, this stop was well worth the wait! Each of us ordered something entirely different and were well satisfied. The cocnut cream pie was the best I have ever had. We also experienced good service. It was pretty quiet in there tho bc we stopped about 130. We have noted it as the place to stop on future road trips. read more

We stopped at The Bunkhouse after a weekend of camping because my kids had their hearts set on pancakes. She took our order at 9:30 and at 10:30 we left with no food in sight. I asked the waitresses three times if they would at least bring the kids' food and they said NO. When we got up to leave, no one tried to convince us to stay - which makes me think the food was still not ready. My kids were disappointed to be at the pizza hut at 11:00 when they wanted syrup at 9:30. read more

I have eaten breakfast her on four different occasions. They only serve breakfast until 11 a.m and not a minute over. The cooks for sure run this place. Today my visit was on a Sunday and they were packed and had major problems handling the crowd. I saw them turn at least 5 groups away and at 11 a.m. told people we are backed up and it would be 40 minutes until they started serving lunch. It took about an hour to get our order. The wait staff was good but they're at the mercy of the slow cooks. I asked on my first visit why they did not serve breakfast all day and was told the cooks would not stand for it. I say time to find new cooks that can handle it. Food is usually good but if I owned this place I would not let the cooks have the power they have as they keep the rest of the staff on edge we thought. If you want a sit down breakfast this is the only place in town. Maybe avoid a busy Sunday and you will for sure get a good breakfast and most include coffee. But do not show up at 10:58 a.m. the cook may of cut off breakfast. read more
