I started this program for my son and ended up taking it for myself. It has been one of the best experiences of my life. I have learned a lot about myself because of this program. I realize I forgot to mention something important. My favorite part of the experience is how inclusive it was. One of the women I partnered with was transgender. I love and appreciate how the staff accepted her into the women's self-defense class openly. You never know these days as society has become more polarized. This class is literally the funnest and the friendliest class ever. I dont know why anyone wouldn't want to sign up!! Its so much fun that you forget you are exercising and after an hour you look ay the clock like "what? Where did the time go?" I have been going here for about a month and a half and i come home sweating like i just got rained on every single day. I go to the morning classes as well and im going to be taking my test at the end of the month!!!! Im so excited and there are also 58 year old men here to kick ass!! Started a few classes here last year before COVID hit full force. What an amazing place. It doesn't matter who you are, what you are, how big you are, what you can lift - this place will bring you to your knees. I love how Chris teaches you such amazing self defense, how to use the others' force against themselves, and builds your self confidence. I also learning to disarm an armed person and get out of choke holds..etc. I eventually was able to thrust 260lb 6'7" classmate off me. Real life stuff. Chris is fantastic, and the other instructors and students I worked with are all great. And the two week trial is an awesome feature. But the billing and account management process is totally unacceptable, and is why I'm giving a two star review. The only account they sell has a minumum commitment of six months ... which totally sucks if you get an injury two months in that prevents you from attending. (Which is what happened to me). But worse, they use an outsourced billing service that makes it deliberately difficult to cancel even after the six months is up and you're on recurring billing. You can't cancel on the service's website. You can't cancel if you call them by phone. I was told that canceling an account requires sending in physical paperwork by mail -- there's no reason for that in 2018 except to make it hard for you to cancel. Canceling because of my back injury requires even more paperwork, which has to be filled out in detail and signed by a doctor. At this point, they have almost a full year of my money for two months of classes, but they're still trying to collect on three more months and make it hard for me to cancel the recurring bill even though I haven't been able to attend for over 10 months. It's a pretty terrible account and billing practice, and a place with good instructors like this should be treating their customers better than that. read more

My fiance and I have been training at Burbank Krav Maga since March 2013. The instructors are great, especially Chris Crouch, the head instructor. Everything is clearly explained and demonstrated. Each Level 1-2 class is structured similar to this example: Warm-up exercises Kicking/punching demo Practice Knife defense demo Practice Knife offense intermediate demo Practice Level 1-2 classes are held Monday-Thursday evenings, with an additional Saturday morning class. The teaching assistants are all very experienced and help you correct your form. I really enjoy the camaraderie here; it's like a big family -- everyone is serious about training, but has a lot of fun doing it. The students there are extremely friendly and the more experienced students really help you when you partner with them. I'm proud to announce that in less than 2 months, I know how to get out of choke hold, properly groin kick, front kick, and side kick, punch and palm strike, and block a knife attack. I've been coming here for the past 3 months and I can honestly say that this place is great! So far, I am still in the Level 1 classes, so I can only accurately review these classes. First this place is located in the basement of the Ultimate Tae Kwon Do. The entrance is directly behind the building, down an alley and you have to ring a bell to enter the school. Keep in mind that there are no signs that actually say "Burbank Krav Maga." Each class starts with about a 5-15 minute cardio/strength based warm up, depending on the instructor. Then after the warm up you get into the lesson. You are almost always paired with a partner and you practice a variety of things (punches, palm strikes, kicks, defense from the ground, preemptive strikes, getting out of chokes, elbows etc). I find all of the instructors and fellow students to be very knowledgeable, approachable and friendly. Everyone really assists you in getting better and perfecting your technique (both the instructors and the students). Classes are offered Monday-Thursday and on Saturdays. I find that for the Level 1 classes, they are the most crowded on Mondays, Tuesdays and Saturdays (it thins out on Wednesdays and Thursdays). If you are new, you can sign up for a free two week trial and if you enroll before your two weeks is up then you get a discounted membership price. Once you are a member then you get a little white card that you stamp every time you come to class to keep track of your classes. In addition to offering classes throughout the week, they also offer a variety of Krav Maga related seminars throughout the Los Angeles area that you can attend. The only downside to this place is that it can get really, really hot + humid despite the fans and A/C. I recommend wearing breathable clothing and bringing water. This is a really great place to learn practical self-defense with a fun group of people! read more

I was looking for a serious Self Defense class where I can learn some basic concepts very quickly with real scenarios. That's where my research lead me to Krav Maga. BKM just happened to be closest to where I live. I am a fan of Martial Arts, but I'm also in my 30's and do not years to dedicate just to get "spiritually in touch". My first introductory class, head instructor Chris Crouch paired me up with an experienced assistant instructor and the next hour would be the most exhausting/painful/non-stop action filled hour I had experienced in a very long time. I was immediately sold. The instructors and students as well were all kind and friendly. They were very careful as to being careful for my safety, and the instructor and assistants were extremely descriptive to make sure I actually understood each move before executing it. I was very skeptical before joining, as my first thoughts before going was ti would be a group of former military personnel wanting to prey on fresh bodies. I was so wrong. Every individual I met during my first class were extremely respectful to me and the art. and the instructors went out of their way to ensure I felt comfortable and had no trouble fitting in. COST: The classes are now offered 5 days a week, and are split up into different times for beginners through advanced. You can go to as many classes you'd like all for the same VERY affordable price. I had tried a couple of other classes initially but cost was a major factor for me, and other schools nearby wanted double of what BKM was charging. GEAR: For most classes, you really don't need any gear unless you really feel you can't punch a light bag without striking gloves, otherwise pads, bags, bamboo sticks, dummy knives, etc are all provided for you. If you decide to join the Sparring class which is one night per week, then you'll need a full set of fight gear for protection. But attendance is not mandatory. CLASSES: If you are a beginner, and have never had any formal training of any kind, this is the place for you. The instructors main goal is to get you used to the concepts of self defense ASAP. Anything can happen at any time or place. And even only after a few classes, you will feel you have a fighting chance in case of such an emergency. This includes training for attackers with weapons like knives and guns, and multiple attackers as well. As I said, the times are all after 6pm, and they have classes 5 days a week. This really helped out with my work schedule. In conclusion, this is a great self defense course designed for real life situations. The staff are great and the students are friendly. There are two things that make a great martial arts class. A good instructor and a good group of students. Burbank Krav Maga has both. Chris, the instructor, has a talent for breaking down techniques and making students feel at ease. He always pushes his students to do their best while understanding their limits so as not to let anyone get hurt. Everything he teaches has a practical real life application. Through timed repetition he also makes sure we get an awesome workout. Chris makes it very clear that his class has one goal, to make sure we all get home safe every day. The students provide a very friendly and encouraging environment. Even as a brand new student you immediately feel like you are being welcomed into the family. Ok, so I only went to two classes. A few years ago I did Krav Maga at a studio in San Diego for many months and so have a decent feel for what a good class is like. They have excellent instructors that take you at your own pace. They are encouraging and complete in their training methods. They also watch out for your fitness level and allow you to stand aside if you need to, but will also give you a little kick in the backside if you're loafing. Very nice studio with good people and good trainers. I am 66 and I really enjoyed my classes with all the younger folks. I was never made to feel left out but included in everything and just did a few less reps or stopped when I needed. Highly recommend and their class prices are very competitive. I did not continue because my circumstances changed and we ended up moving out of town, other wise I probably would be down there still hitting and kicking and getting in the best shape of my life! Having had absolutely zero martial arts experience under my belt, I started coming to Burbank Krav Maga in February. They offer a free two week introductory trial during which you can come as often as you want to the level 1 classes Monday -Thursday and Saturday classes. During those two weeks you decide if Krav is right for you. The owner, Mr. Crouch and the instructors (who I've trained with - there are others), John, Grant and Kayleigh are all fantastic. While they of course are focused on getting students trained in Krav Maga, they are all understanding of the learning aspect of Krav. Six months in and I can honestly say that each class is as good a workout as I've ever had. I leave each class drained and soaked and feeling fantastic. The size of the classes at Burbank Krav Maga, is just right (Up to 14), and I feel I'm getting more personal instruction as a result, Unlike other places where the class size could be well over 25-30, which make it very difficult for the instructor to make sure you are learning the techniques properly because of the small class size Christ, the instructors, is able to make sure you are safe and pushing yourself to the limits. Level 1-2 classes are good for any level, and if you continue to the advance class, there's lots of grappling and sparring. There is even a fight class on wednesdays that is open to all students (sparring with shin guards, head gear, and gloves). I've been going to Burbank Krav Maga for just over a month now, and I've got to say, I couldn't be happier with the experience. Because of my work schedule, I can only go on Saturday mornings, but it's good to know that the VERY reasonable rates allow me to go as many times as I want. I was very pleased by the environment of encouragement, helping fellow students, and the amazing camaraderie that exists in the classes. No macho bullshit, and a great mix of both genders. This welcoming tone is set by the owner/Instructor Chris, who, while being obviously very dedicated to his art, manages to keep it fun while being educational. There's also a fine group of more experienced students who happily help along a clumsy oaf like myself! If you're even considering Krav, then this is where you want to check out first. When I wanted to get back into the martial arts I wanted to learn a system that was easy to grasp, realistic, effective and I discovered Krav Maga. I started learning Krav Maga at BKM back in Jan of 2013 and after 2 months I started to see improvements physically, mentally and most importantly in my martial arts ability. I have been sticking with BKM because of their affordability, class schedules and the instructors like Mr. Chris Crouch. He really knows how to break down the concepts that are taught here and he focuses on the details and performing the techniques slowly so that in time you will develop speed when you need to execute the techniques. At BKM you will learn about getting out of a variety chokes, weapon defenses, Thai combinations, defensive techniques and grappling techniques. They also have a fight class which is awesome because you get to see how effective these moves are and how defend against them. Being a former Marine and a former MMA and Boxing fan and practitioner I thought I knew quite a bit of self defense. Let me just say that I am very impressed with Chris and his team. The set up is easy, prices are relatively inexpensive compared to other Martial Arts schools, and his team is friendly, fair, and extremely knowledgeable. Unfortunately because of work and I have to move to Irvine and was unable to attend more classes. However during the time I was there I learned more than I have in my earlier years of training in other martial arts in a shorter period of time. The classes are both fun, and can be intense depending on how much you want to put out yourself. Krav Maga is the most effective, martial arts system I have practiced (I have done joy jitsu, boxing and MMA). This system will teach you new techniques that enable you to defend yourself or even save your life if you are attacked.
