So I came across Mangetout on instagram a few months ago and was impressed with how the food…read morelooked. After reading the reviews and hearing about it some more, We decided to make a day trip if it from London to Southend-on-Sea and see if the food lived up to the hype. Oh boy, the pictures don't do the food justice. Firstly, this is one of the very few places where the food actually looks like the picture!! So my hubby ordered the rib tips for a starter, daughter had the shrimp starter and I had the brisket end starter. We were bowled over by how delicious the starters were. The shrimp was crispy and just plain gorgeous, we've never tasted better, honestly. Just he shrimp alone made the trip worth it. The rib tips and brisket ends were also amazing. So yummy. For our mains, were we glad we'd starved before coming! Hubby had the manwich, massive sandwiches, never seen bigger honestly and he said they were sooo good. Sandwiches came with chips and coleslaw and he demolished the lot to the shock of the waiter lol. My daughter had hickory smoked ribs and that came with corn on the cob, salad, coleslaw and chips. The meat off the rib just literally fell off the bone. It was so delicious and so full of flavour that even she managed to eat most of it. I had the Almighty burger...there are just no words to describe the awesomeness of this beast. It also came with chips and slaw and it was fantastic I ate it all. The portions here are HUGE and we didn't need to eat anything else all day... Apart from dessert coz honestly we'd come all the way, why not have dessert hey? The dessert was amazing, everything was amazing. We were so full at the end, thank God the restaurant is right by the sea and pier so we had a long walk site seeing to get the food down before going back home. We are certainly returning to taste all the other stuff on the menu! YUMMY!!!!!! Service was really good and the music and drinks were excellent

Ive been here twice. First time was good, but very slow service. As it took so long I then asked for it to be takeaway...They then charged service...Not sure what for. Mama's ribs coating was too thick and to be honest not very nice. Perhaps they messed up the recipe? Meat itself was very good, but I struggled to remove as much of the coating as possible. Sweetcorn overcooked. Staff seemed ingenuine...Atmosphere is pretty good, but pretty poor value and food is hit and miss. The place across the road is the opposite. Humble, delicious and well priced.

I stress, this is just my experience, so bare with me and take my following review with a pinch of…read moresalt (which sadly would probably be more seasoning than in their burger patties) I give it 2 stars simply because one of the two waitress smiled at us and made a good attempted at small talk whilst waiting for the card machine to process my "recoiling at the price of the bill" debit card payment, and the posh scruffy kid next to me made me chuckle with his salty egg-and-fork microwave cooking techniques (yes, fork+Microwave) - he was a regular by the sounds of it, so they must have "some spark in the joint"... Sadly I never saw it. It started with me nearly having to explain to an "American style diner" what "Having it naked" means (and incase you don't know - it's having it without the bun). Burger meat was flavourless and bland, the "so called" monterey cheese was actually a slice of regular processed cheddar, they got my milkshake wrong, the chef didn't "double up" my burger (as ordered) - as a consequence one "patty" was left to go cold whilst he cooked the other one, nor did he cook our chips and then argued with the waitress about us NOT ordering chips and waving our ticket about, until the manager turned up and made him read the ticket - to which he clumped a "smaller than McDonalds 'small fries'" hand full (I stress the word "full" being a heavily exaggerated and strong word in this context) of poorly excused French fries in a large basket and flopped a teaspoon of that MontCheddary cheese sauce. The fresh lettuce was warm and wilted. And there was more onion hiding under the slice of MontCheddery than a half price onion sale at G'send market. the lighting was at that annoying shade of red... The type of red where you can't quite tell if your meat is actually cooked or just cold through the sorrow of waiting for his mate to turn up well done.! When I asked for the bill, the waitress wondered off to the till, then back... Straight past me, dealt with another table then back to the till and then I got my bill. For what we got on our plate, the bill was an appalling insult to my culinary deprived stomach.! For example - £5 for our angry chief spit-full of poorly demented fries slightly shown what cheese smells like.! I fatally un-enjoyed the whole experience.

Service was prompt, but average. The pancakes I had were very good, but they were only two small…read moresized ones which I found to be the most disappointing fact of all. The second was the "Maple flavoured" syrup, why not just regular Maple Syrup? And thirdly, the price for such a small meal. I won't be rushing back for more, but I won't be against go back in the future.
