Black dog was tucked away beside the Empire Tavern. Look for the wooden sign with the paw print. Our trio had the Beef Smash Burger, the Brisket burger and the Chicken Sandwich. You can add fries and a beer for $11NZD. There was only one beer available (a hazy IPA which was *mwah* so good!) the fries were more of a Dutch cut than shoestring, but they were also very very good! The pickle chips were sweet pickles; also tasty. It's a small place, with three tables and a long counter. There is an interior connection to the tavern next door. Service was great. There seemed to be two people working this lunch. Front of house takes orders, pours beers and grills the burgers, and operates the fryer. Back of house does the dishes and restocks. Efficient and delicious. If time allows or if we ever come back, I'll be back.

That's seriously amazing considering the burger is pretty massive. If it wasn't for the fun I had watching my skinny mate trying not to throw up during the challenge, then I would have only given velvet a 4 stars. There is nothing wrong with the burger itself, it just feels like its lacking that something special. Then again, I suppose they make it special by setting up a eating challenge so that you can laugh at the demise of your mates or them laughing at you if you are partaking in the challenge.

I ordered the White Lady, which is one of their signature burgers. It had a beef patties, Scotch steak, Colby cheese, bacon, fried egg, grilled pineapple, fried onions, lettuce, and tomato. It sounded like a ton of ingredients, but I figured I had to try their namesake burger. I had taken my food back to my hotel, which was only about a 10-15 minute walk back. Understandably, the burger was a bit soggy. That wasn't the worst part though. My main gripe with this burger though, was the Scotch steak. It was probably my fault for not entirely knowing what a Scotch steak was. The steak was chewy and I was NOT able to bite it off each time I took a bite of the burger. After a couple bites struggling to separate the steak from the rest of the burger, I ended up just taking the steak out and eating it with a fork and knife. I cannot understand why you would put something on a burger if it cannot be bitten off solely with your teeth. It goes against the point of having something handheld. On top of that, the steak was very bland. The burger patties itself was okay, nothing amazing. Coming to New Zealand, I didn't anticipate on having a burger at all, but I was so hungry and didn't know my way around Newmarket, I think coming here was actually fate. I cannot tell you how fantastic the Lamb Burger was--the meat was so tender, the burger literally melted in my mouth. I'm not much of a beetroot eater (and I'm told this is a common topping in Australian and New Zealand burgers), but it was different in a good way. The bun was also really good, so no complains about the burger at all. We also got the Potato Skins with Truffle Aioli--amaaazing! They were hot and fresh when it came to our table and the chunky portions were more than generous. It's such a shame I'm almost 9,000 miles away because I'm craving a meal from this place at this very moment. The staff were a fun bunch, especially our waiter, Liam, who was full of laughs.
