Tucked away in the hills that overlook the Rhine, you'll find Kloster Eberbach. It is stunning in…read moreits serenity and impressive to think that it was built long ago without the help of modern construction. You may recognize it from the 1986 Sean Connery film "The name of the Rose". My family is emigrated from a city just down the road and that used to be a part of the Monastery's estate, and I'm fortunate to stay in touch with the relatives that stayed behind. On Christmas day last year when everything is closed (and the parents wanted to tend to the Christmas roast -- think the same fuss as a Thanksgiving turkey), we young 'uns headed down to the Abbey to check things out. The buildings were closed, but the grounds were open, and we and some other locals meandered around, finally winding up by the sheep and goats. One little guy kept poking his head out to have his chin scratched, and I was happy to oblige him. I'll look forward to my next visit, hopefully on a day when the place is open so I can tour it and learn more about the Abbey's history!

I came here with a group from work for a team building adventure. We started out breaking into teams for a scavenger hunt around the monastery; then hiked up the top of the hill to see a breath taking view of the countryside and had a light snack at the summit; then returning for a formal tour of the monastery followed by wine tasting in the cellar; and finally we had dinner here at their restaurant to wrap up our 5 hour excursion. Today this place is used for festivals and concerts but you get an appreciation of the dedication and effort of a few men that resulted in an amazing historical landmark. There was also a movie filmed here in the 1980's by Sean Connery. This was a humbling and fantastic experience all rolled into one great adventure that I would highly recommend as a must see place that you will appreciate.

The occasions themselves were sparkling and happy already. But still, how the space grabbed me so from the very first moment. That said, I can't speak for a regular night out. They do close fairly often for private events, which perhaps speaks volumes to how beloved this gentle haunt is. Best to call ahead to make sure they are open. It's beautiful. Lush and elegant, without feeling like a museum. Inviting...into an era long past but brought back to life, without feeling painfully forced and stiff or awkward. You feel like you're in someone's *really*spectacular* home, the meticulously and most lovingly designed living room of someone's abode, rooms that can be comfortably walked around and cherished. The first time there was a live band. I was in heaven. The second time, there were stacks of records piping out tunes. I was charmed. I don't know whether the record player was a touch provided by the private party, or whether that is a staple of the venue. So many questions... I'm going to find an excuse to head back to try out their menu, experience a "normal" night out, and see if their service team is just as warm and friendly to the public. Because if so, it's bound to be another delightful evening. And Frankfurt is all the richer for a piece of poetry and throwback to the golden era as this. Proof that there are places with utter character and flair in Ffm.

When we walked up on the place, I was unsure if we were in the correct location. Once using the speaker box, someone answered the door and escorted us the lounge. We walked through the foyer and were pleasantly surprised as we entered the lounge. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL, like something staged out of a movie. The velvet seating, mirrors, the bar, it was simply beautiful. The pictures really don't do it justice...YOU MUST GO! Now...my opinion of the cocktails!! Exquisite! We were hosted at the bar by a lovely gentlemen with a sparkling personality, while the manager frequently checked in on us as it wasn't too busy. The cocktails were delicious! I usually stick to wine or my signature drink made with tequila but I experimented as this guy was in FACT talented and skilled. I am sure you will love the atmosphere, the service, and the cocktails! ENJOY and CHEERS! I'd love to go back next time Im in the area.
