Now ive done a bit of traveling and sometimes a place that looks great can be kinda gimmicky, so this was my fear with this location, BUT now that I have been I can promise Mystery Spot was easily my favorite part of our trip. The owner was there, she was funny and kind and very knowledgeable! Another highlight was a shock, the layout! it was so easy to walk through and get lost in each room, everything was organized and easy to look through. I can't say enough how much that helped, I hate feeling like a bull in a china shop so feeling comfortable walking around was a big factor for me. My partner and I purchased our first antique and have our eye on our next purchase here, giving us an excuse to come back to the beautiful little paradise that is Phoenicia. Thank you Mystery Spot! You all helped make our holiday extra special. Hope to see you soon!

Behind the glass, faded photos of dead and forgotten strangers stared back at me like ghosts waiting for a train that's never coming. I was inside just the last week, they had lots of cool vintage stuff. On the porch sat a wooden crate full of old vinyl records labeled "YARD SALE IN A BOX. $1 AN ITEM." A Camelot soundtrack album was sticking out, warped slightly by the sun. Over head hung a red upside-down sign that read "MYSTERY SPOT," right next to cheap plastic slogans about Cypress Gardens and Clutter World. My big, lean hound stood on the porch planks, sniffing around the wood like he was trying to catch the scent of a better decade, or just trying to get inside. It's the kind of joint that hoards the cool junk of a thousand lives vintage clothes, oddities, records, etcetera. Its the kind of place where they don't care if you buy anything, or just browse and they probably don't care if you leave. My dog didn't bark, the door didn't open, and the sun just kept beating down on the boardwalk planks, so we just sat for a bit and split a sandwich.

It's kind of hurtful. It's happened multiple times, inside and outside of the store. I recall going to the farmers market and him being inside the store until I came around, he immediately came outside and followed me around :/ It's a big shame as I want to like the store but just can't

That said, the Re-Collector has picked up a few gems so if you're a hard core collector, you'll likely spend a little time flipping through the bins. There's some CDs, DVDs, cassettes, and even a shelf of 8-tracks, and then a bunch of completely randomized tschotschkes. While I'm a sucker for this sort of thing usually we haven't found anything interesting on repeated visits. The music and vibe can be interesting or annoying, which goes double for the Re-Collector himself; he seems to be a bit moody. The store's pretty cramped, too, so go in with your claustrophobia under control and I recommend not taking any bags in, either. Worth a buzz-by if you like random odd used stuff stores, but not a can't miss one-of-those-things IMHO.

Thankfully for the Vinyl Music Vault, nothing that I write will stop a music lover from stopping in, if they're visiting Oneonta - that's just the nature of loving music stores, you always need to see for yourself. The owner is straight out of central casting...assuming your making a movie about an out of touch record store owner from a bygone era. Talking non-stop nonsense about how much each of his records is worth...and if you don't buy it RIGHT NOW, it's going to cost you $100 in just a few months. That literally came out of his mouth a few times. It was amusing to overhear but after a few minutes it became a tired routine. As for prices. His vinyl was a little higher than what I would expect on a few things that I looked out. Nothing too crazy but I didn't spot any deals. His CD prices were bizarre. Someone needs to break it to him about Napster, MP3s and everything that's happened in the last 20 years. $15 for used CD's that can be found at any Goodwill for $1 is just dumb. If you're within a 10 minute drive - Go. But temper your expectations.

The atmosphere is welcoming, the music sets the tone perfectly, and you can tell right away that there's real passion behind everything they do. What really stood out to me was the selection. Whether you're digging through records or checking out everything else they have to offer, there's a unique mix you don't just find anywhere. It's clear that a lot of care goes into curating what's on the shelves, and it makes browsing actually fun instead of overwhelming. The customer service is another level too. You're not just another person walking through the door--they take the time to talk, recommend things, and make you feel comfortable. That kind of energy is hard to come by these days.
