This review is for the lodge restaurant. (not the lodge, the cabin, or the state park). Yikes! Please avoid eating here. If you must, the way to go is order a pizza to go and pick it up when it is ready. The pros: beautiful view over the water, great at sun down. The cons: the food took way too long to come out. They forgot to bring the soup and salad we order before the meal, and by the time they went to get my soup, they had run out of that kind! See attached photos and video of the fish. Sad to say both my wife and I ordered that same meal. When it finally did come out the fish was so deeply fried that it was rock hard and there was not much remanence of any kind of fish meat left to be scavenged. Not even a forest dwelling mongrel would have gone for this disastrous preparation. I asked the waitress if it was supposed to be like this and she said "yes". (looking back that is a pretty funny answer) I told her that we were not going to be able to eat the meal. I mean even if we wanted to, it really wasn't food at this point. Is there anything she could do for us? After going to the back and having a discussion with her manger, she came back and said she could provide 30% off of each fish meal..... that is so close to doing nothing. And it wasn't just us. After we "ate" another couple stopped us and told us about the terrible experience they had with the meal. Burr Oak Lodge Restaurant, I suggest you just serve pizza. read more

Peaceful winter weekend My husband and I decided to stay here for a relaxing weekend and it did not disappoint. We started our journey at the nature center and met Julie. She gave us great advice on hiking trails and restaurants in the area. We proceeded to the lodge to check into our room. The lodge is older but well maintained. It has a beautiful lobby with large windows to overlook the lake. Lots of seating areas, games to play and a fireplace. Our room was huge. It had a bedroom and living room area plus two bathrooms. The lodge has everything you need if you don't want to leave - pool, restaurant, exercise room, hiking trails, etc. Plus the best part we practically had the place to ourselves! read more

I was nervous going to Burr Oak State Park Lodge after Ohio's Deer Creek State Lodge, but this lodge was a huge improvement! This is much nicer! It is a bit dated, but not terrible. Compared to Deer Creek State Lodge, this is vastly better! It was quiet, peaceful, and serene. The rooms and beds are very comfortable and clean. Room air conditioning worked great, and the bed appeared to be new. I checked the whole mattress, no bed bugs. The carpets looked a little worn, but again, Deer Creek was so so much worse. I did not see any trash anywhere, this was an extremely clean Lodge/facility. The heated swimming pool was nice, with towels guests could use. Lots of outdoor spaces. The food at Burr Oak Lodge was excellent! Expect to spend about $16-$20 per person, per meal. Food was good. All the Burr Oak staff were extremely nice and helpful! I have no complaints about Burr Oak Lodge! Only 4 starts instead of 5 stars simply due to slightly outdated ambiance and decor. read more

I have stayed at all of the Ohio State Lodges. I have enjoyed them ALL until coming upon this one. This was the worst and an embarrassment to our state. First, upon arrival our DELUXE cabin was dirty. We needed to clean it to use it. The bucket we were provided was cracked except for 2 inches at the bottom and the mop should have been thrown away years ago. The screened in porch was so full of dirt that we needed to sweep it prior to mopping. We ended up with over a dustpan of dirt. The top of the fridge had not been cleaned for a long time. The full size bed at the head went to the floor. It ended up it was missing a support board. To get out of the bed the person had to climb at the end or over the other person. We requested towels, as we were only provided with 2 sets for 6 people, and 24 hours later we drove to the lodge to get them. The linens were a fitted sheet on the bed and another fitted sheet to cover with. There were NO blankets provided. We were provided with a thin comforter. We were provided with no tissues and needed to use TP as tissues. The indoor pool was closed. Upon check in we were told the beach was down the path next to the lodge. There was no beach down the path by the lodge, it was a boat dock. The pictures on the website should be updated. If you look at the pictures there is a nice mini golf and tennis court. However, when you are there the pristine mini golf is overrun with weeds as high as your hip. The tennis court has last falls leaves on it and garbage. For example, there was a Gatorade bottle left on the court so long that the top bright orange cap had turned a light orange almost white color. We were offered a refund of 1 night from the manager. UPDATE: Upon speaking to the GM we were refunded a second night and they are updating the cabins. read more

My boyfriend and decided we needed an escape from the city life...so we ventured here. The lodge is set back in the park so it's a little drive to get to. The lodge is a little older and kinda needs remodeling. There is a restaurant/bar in the lodge. There is an indoor pool but no hot tub. The rooms are simple, but bring your own pillow (theirs are flat) and bring a blanket (if freeze baby like me) the sheets are thin. We ate dinner in the lodge and the service was friendly but slow. We ordered a dozen wings (half BBQ and half buffalo). The wings were really good but they listed them as "jumbo" and they were on the small size. For main course he ordered the buckeye burger with fries. He said it was okay nothing special (he eats a lot of burgers). I ordered the veggie burger with their homemade chips. I thought that the burger was good but nothing I would do a kart wheel to go back for. I also ordered a hot chocolate and that was fantastic. It's a nice get away here to bring the family. read more

We stopped in the restaurant for dinner. Food is pricy for the quality... $50 for two, including desert. The veg (no choice offered) was obviously canned, surprising at the height of farmers market season when good local produce should be available (and used). Service was good but spoiled by the quality of the food. For those who plan on hiking the many local trails box lunches (sandwich, apple,cookie, soda/water?) are available for $11. read more

Family and I spent a weekend here but it left us disappointed. The remodel and interior is excellent, the rooms were clean and good size. The issue becomes logistics: 1. There is no easy way to get to a walking path. You have to drive your car to the closest trail. 2. The mini golf was unattended. The yard games were scattered and people just grabbed what they could. 3. Restaurant closed at 10pm on a Saturday night. The bar was nice but getting waited on was a slow. 4. The lake had boat rentals but you could only go 10mph... If they could relocate this nice lodge to Hueston Woods, then you're onto something! Hueston Woods lacks a remodeled lodge but they do everything else right. read more

We stayed at the Lodge for one night. The room was nice, clean and spacious. Although there were some odd things like hard to find light switches and a random sink in the living area. The room was very dark. The outside of the lodge was very tired looking. The paint was peeling off of the shutters on the lower level rooms. The stair cases looked as they had not been mopped in weeks. The exterior areas were not well kept-moss and dirt on stairways and walls. The most disappointing factor was the cigarette butts all over. There were at least 2 areas, near exit doors, where there were trash cans with ash trays on top. The cigarette butts were flowing over the ash tray. Then there was one of those plastic ash tray receptacles right outside of the restaurant door (which may be against code in OH). So, if you were sitting outside having a drink, you could smell someone smoking. The restaurant was OK. The staff was nice and the food was average. I'll never go back to this State Park. read more

Welcome brochure: "Our entire staff is dedicated to one purpose, and that is making your stay as relaxing and refreshing as possible. We want to exceed, not just meet, your expectations." Reality: Maintenance was banging around in the storage room next to our room, at midnight. It stopped after 15 minutes so I didn't complain, but when it occurred again on the second night I called the front desk. I asked that she have them stop moving furniture into the storage room, since it was 1220 in the morning and I needed to get some rest. Her response was "I'll mention it to them." No apology was offered, and certainly no meeting or exceeding expectations philosophy was in evidence! It went on for another 15 minutes, and I was about to go out and have the front desk wake up THEIR manager, but it stopped. I don't recommend this establishment, but if you DO go, stay away from room 219! read more

The lodge looks great. The walls in the rooms must be paper thin. We could hear the next room like they were in the room with us. Had dinner in the dining room. It was okay. The meal I ordered was supposed to come with corn fritters. It came with swap fried buffalo cauliflower. When I asked the server she said that is what they have been doing lately, was it okay. I said no, it's deal fried cauliflower. We did get a 10% discount. read more

I love staying here. I ran on the treadmill, went on a four mile hike in the snow, went swimming in February, and got a pepperoni pizza to go from the restaurant. I am leaving one star because I have to to leave a review. We stayed in a cabin. To say it was in bad shape is an under statement. The curtains were ripped, the furniture was filthy and out dated. There were cobwebs under the bed, the boxspring was coming apart and sagging. This cabin was 150 a night with a AAA discount. This was a huge rip off!! We did go into the hotel a few times and found it too to be out dated and in disparate need of repairs. We went to the restaurant and found the food to be over priced. Been a few years since last visited. Very, very worn, tired looking. Check in at 5 pm. Restaurant closes at 8. So hurried to eat. Had a cup of coffee in Lobby. Then to room to unpack. Booked a family suite. Realized the tub was dirty and had hair in it. Had to use the shower stall in other bathroom. But, hair stuck in drain. At 9pm moved to room in other wing. Guess what... dirt balls on floor behind door and dried dirt spots in entry and master bathroom floor. Very disappointed. Never again. read more

This place is an absolute gem! I made a spur of the moment decision to stay here and could not be happier with my experience. My room was spotless; the atmosphere was fun and inviting. I have been to this Ohio park/resort several times, enjoying the roads in SE Ohio. The restaurant is pleasnt with good views. But...why does the kitchen not open until NOON on a Saturday? Really? Pathetic. But the waitress was pleasant and attentive without being obnoxious about it...and the manager made an obligatory visit to see if 'everything is allright'. Problem is it took nearly 40 minutes to bring out the food for a table of 6 in a nearly empty restaurant. I will go back, for the scenery and the roads, but not for the service. read more

Just spent a couple of nights here with the family during spring break, which is not peak season at the park. In fact it is not even close to peak season. Which is probably why there aren't more stars above. First the bad - the rooms are small and kinda spartan, but that's OK. Its a State Park lodge not a marriot. What wasn't great is that our room had not been cleaned very well, we found lots of trash next to the beds and the night stand that would have been found if they had cleaned thoroughly. Also, the food prices at the Lodge Restaurant were definitely on the high side. $13 for a plate of baked ziti that wasn't even really baked? $14-15 for a chicken breast on a plate of plain pasta? C'mon, Man!! Now the Good - The Lodge had a nice view of the Lake and the staff could not have been nicer. They also have a very nice pool which was clean and had cool glass ceilings that let lots of light in. The food in the dining room was pretty dece, although expensive as discussed above. Overall, the Park was in good shape for being "off season" and we did some hiking along scenic paths overlooking the lake just about anywhere you go. Also, the cabins looked nice that you can rent. Next time, we are going to check that option out. Burr Oak deserves another visit during the summer when it has all its facilities rolled out and everything is in full bloom!! read more

Cardinal Dinning Restaurant has some really good thin crust pizza! Pool is real nice too and chemicals are well balanced. Beds are comfortable in the lodge. We just returned from a wonderful long weekend at Burr Oak Lodge. The location was selected as a mid-meeting-point between our home in MI and that of friends from NC. It turned out to be a great choice. In general, the accommodations were very comfortable and clean, the staff were consistently friendly, professional, and helpful and the location was perfect for our shared interests of hiking and exploring. The winding, hilly roads through forested terrain leading to Burr Oak made us feel as if we were truly away from it all for a few days. The lodge was a perfect spot for a meet-up because it offered both comfortable rooms and public spaces. The focus of the centrally-located common area includes a 2-sided fireplace, a great spot to warm up or relax after an excursion. We ate several meals at the on-site Cardinal Dining Room during our stay. Frankly, there aren't many options nearby, so we ate breakfasts there before heading out, dinner the night we arrived, and one late afternoon lunch after a day of hiking within the park. The breakfasts ($9.99 for the buffet) offered the usual suspects of scrambled eggs, bacon/sausage, potatoes, oatmeal/grits, fruit, waffles/pancakes/French toast, bread products, yogurt, donuts, etc. However, the staff were the true gems of the dining experience, consistently friendly, welcoming, and accommodating - simply a really nice way to start each day. Side note - our dinner meal on arrival night was meh, but we found our late lunch pizza and salad meal to be great! The salads were enormous and the pizza surprisingly delicious! When not eating there, we found good restaurants in Nelsonville and Athens during our travels. The room my husband and I had overlooked the woods and lake, which afforded views of lots of woodpeckers and bluebirds in the morning and beautiful sunsets in the evening. I even enjoyed getting up early to go to the fitness room because I had the same beautiful view while on the treadmill. Other notes on our room - our king sized bed was very comfortable, having 2 full bathrooms and a living room felt like a ton of space, and the mini fridge in the room was great to keep beverages and snacks cold. The only thing I was not crazy about was the shower in the master bath. I love the concept of a rain shower, but I haven't quite figured out the benefit of the half wall/glassed shower stall area that has become somewhat popular - other than not having to deal with shower doors or curtains. The look is nice, but despite my best efforts, water constantly splashed out of the shower enclosure onto the bathroom floor and at times, I froze as soon as I stepped out of the hot water. Other than that minor detail, the accommodations were perfect for our stay. As mentioned previously , we enjoyed hiking some of the well-marked trails around the park and found the scenery to be beautiful. However, we were quite shocked when we saw posted warnings around the lake regarding no/limited contact due to toxic algae. With that in mind, we will undoubtedly choose to return to Burr Oak Lodge, but will again do so when water sports are not part of our planned activities. read more

While the accommodation was fine (clean and comfortable) and the park is great (although its showing deferred maintenance because the state has cut so much funding from its parks) and the staff friendly and helpful, I can only give the place 3 stars because of the food. It simply isn't that great for the price and is not what I would expect from a state park lodge. I got the fried fish for dinner. The vegetables were over-cooked and mushy. The fish was mediocre and they didn't even serve a lemon-wedge with it. The overall menu was limited. Not even a simple spaghetti dish for the kids. The breakfast was most disappointing. A buffet was the only option. The pancakes were obviously made from a cheap, low quality mix. My son loves most pancakes, but hated these, and I'd have to agree. We had to ask if cereal was available for my son, but all they had to offer was overly-sugared stuff. The eggs were dry and generally unappealing (I would guess they were a pre-mix rather than fresh). No fresh fruit was offered. Also, every other hotel or lodge I've stayed at that offers breakfast has oatmeal on a daily basis rather than switching back and forth between grits and oatmeal every other day like they do (I was there on grits day). It's not like oatmeal is expensive or difficult to prepare. They didn't even put bowls out for the grits. I would also add that southeast Ohio has a lot of local food producers. You would think the concessionaire running the lodge would use that for the marketing potential like a lot of other places do these days. It would also mean fresher food. We actually ate dinner in Athens on our second night and we went to the grocery store there and bought provisions for breakfast for our second morning. By far the biggest complaint here on Yelp about this place, which is otherwise pretty nice, is the food. You would think they would pay attention, but they obviously aren't. read more

The park and the lake are beautiful but the cabin we rented is in desperate need of a remodel although it looked to be clean it was worn enough that it made the cabin feel dirty. We did visit the lodge for the pool and the restaurant and the lodge seemed to be in better condition. The pool was clean and nice and the service and food and the restaurant were good. read more

We took our grandkids for a getaway trip and had a great time. The lodge was beautiful, loved the family suites, especially the 2 bathrooms, 2 TV's and french doors to close off the 2 rooms, though disappointed our room didn't have a balcony or access to the outside, so wanted to have my morning coffee with a view of the lake. Sadly the stone wall around the property was too high to sit and see the lake over it anyway. We thought we would take our coffee to the gazebo to enjoy the lake, but there wasn't anywhere to sit, they really need a small table & chairs in the gazebo to make it useable. The lobby was beautiful, though there were only 2 rocking chairs to view the lake and they were always occupied. Actually we wanted to sit outside on the porch for the lake view, but there were no chairs. It would be a perfect place for a long row of chairs to enjoy the lake. It was hard to find a place to actually enjoy the lake view. We would have loved to enjoy a fire in the small firepit one evening, but again there were no chairs around it and we did not want to sit on the ground. Mohican Lodge makes a big fire every evening for their guests, but I believe Burr Oak charges for the firewood??? Loved eating in the dining room, our server was excellent and attentive, though the kitchen was slow getting our food out. Their sandwiches were Huge and delicious, but not appealing to the older kids, luckily they were allowed to choose from the kids menu, which was for 10 years old and under. I thank the restaurant for seeing to that even though my grandkids were older. Skip the French Onion Soup, tasted like it came from a can, very bad, but everything else we tried was pretty good. There is no outdoor pool, but the indoor pool was clean and open to the outside, it kept the kids happy. The lodge also offered free access to 4 fishing poles & bait to be used, which we did, very nice surprise. They had a new recreation shack with a new shelter house, playground, new Putt Putt golf, tennis courts, etc. Very nice! One day we rented a pontoon for a couple of hours, the kids loved it, especially the boat swimming area, they could have stayed there all day. Afterwards we drove our car to the very small beach, old & nothing to write home about, but they had a good time. About 20 minutes from the lodge is a place in Nelsonville called the Fun Barn, the kids Loved it!!! A big Arcade with lots of games, 10 first run movies for $4 a ticket, full size pizza's for $5, hamburgers and other food, very inexpensive, It was hard getting them to leave!!! All in all we had a great time at Burr Oak, they are already talking about going back next year! read more

My family decided to have a mini-reunion luncheon at Burr Oak Lodge this past Sunday. Ali Mayle in Sales worked with me over the course of a week to reserve a private dining room for an ever-changing number of attendees. When we arrived, Tyrell (sp?) has assured that our room was clean and ready for us, with a fantastic view over the lake and the fall foliage. Our server, Alexis, was incredibly pleasant, efficient and professional, taking care of numerable orders and separate checks with an ever-ready smile, even taking group photos of us at the end of the delicious meal chosen from a varied menu with something for everyone. This was a top-notch experience and I recommend the lodge highly. read more

I came here expecting great food and service here at the restaurant but it was absolutely atrocious. I waited an hour and a half for our salads and half our food for a table of eight. Half of our food was cold and stale fries. The burgers were not made correctly and had extremely burnt bacon that was black as coal. I was absolutely horrified by what was sent out the window. I can guarantee that I will never come back to this restaurant. Overpriced for cold burnt food. read more

We recently attended a family reunion at Burr Oak Lodge. We stayed in Cabin 16 & paid around $150 per night for 4 nights. The cabin was very spacious, but hardly enjoyable. The décor in the cabin was old and outdated, but I could look past that. What I could not look past was how dirty the place was. It looked like the cabin hadn't been touched in months -- dead bugs on kitchen counter and appliances, as well as in the cabinets, on dishes and pans, and even in the coffee maker. There were cobwebs in every corner of every room, even attached from ceiling to furniture. The beds were probably there from day 1. The bottoms of the box springs were hanging down to the floor, mattresses so flimsy I feared falling onto the nasty floor, dead bugs under the lamps and behind the beds, and only a sheet and a blanket for bedding. I understand we are in nature and there's bugs and spiders, but the outside of the cabin was covered in webs and spiders. My motto for the week was "Don't Look UP". The furniture on the screened porch probably hadn't seen a cleaning cloth since 1988! My husband and I had to clean the cabin before we could even relax a little. We went to town to buy Clorox wipes and returned to wipe down EVERYTHING. We used the vacuum and broom provided to get down cobwebs, kill spiders and clean the floors. Pitiful to pay that kind of money and have to clean your own place before you can feel "un-grossed-out"! Leaving the cabin on Day 5 was a great feeling. We even had the biggest spider I've ever seen help motivate us to move out a little quicker. We went home with bed bug bites on all 3 of us, and had to wash & rewash every single item we took on this trip. I think Burr Oak Lodge could be a beautiful place to enjoy family, friends and nature. But there has to be more investment in the property. It saddens me to see how dilapidated this once beautiful place has become. read more

Great place to stay. Very quiet, beautiful lake, nice lodge rooms with Windows you can open. Restaurant had great service and the food we had was good. Bargain microbrew prices and even $5 a glass house wines. Canoe livery a mile from lodge and rental rate of $12/hour and nobody on the the lake but us and fish and a beautiful big blue Herron. Highly recomended place to stay and eat for a quiet time! We will be back! read more

Wow, how things have changed, the lodge is being renovated and the food is outstanding, they are open for business and it is well worth the visit. They have a $16 10 ounce Ribeye and very unique and interesting options for eating that were never in place before. Chef Fugate is very skilled and has a keen understanding of what is needed to make this a destination worth visiting. The rooms are completely remodeled, at least half of the wing in the lodge, the pool has been redone and is amazing. Totally worth a visit. read more

This is in regards to the restaurant only - I can't comment on the accommodations! The food was expensive and terrible. Service was terrible. And I had the Tuna Steak salad. It was gross and I'm fairly certain it was well past it's expiration date. Oh, and their "draft beers" came in bottles. So, the only reason I'm giving this two stars is because the view is perfect! And that made everything bearable, not better, but bearable. If only they could do something about their food (and prices - definitely not worth the price) and service, they would have a great thing going! read more

We visited Burr Oak for lunch on 11/8/2018. The restaurant opens at 12 noon, and we were seated at opening along with a party of 4. We were the only customers there. It still took 50 minutes to be served. My wife and I ordered french onion soup, "Rich beef broth with caramelized onions, topped with garlic croutons and melted provolone cheese." and a PLT, "Our house made smoked pork served on a toasted Brioche bun topped with bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion straws and finished with golden BBQ sauce." The soup was horrid. Cheap boxed broth with some onions tossed in, grey and nasty with the croutons merely soggy blobs, and with some weird metallic taste. The sandwich was a lump of tepid pork with very little smoke flavor. It had what appeared to be mustard smeared on some edges and came with additional bbq sauce that tasted like some cheap bottled sauce from the local store. Folks, I judge a place by how they feed you, and I would never stay here. read more
