We got to meet Gregory Box Johnson - a pilot who went to the Space station twice! We also seen the zero gravity facility where NASA can make objects become weightless for slightly over 5 seconds as it drops below ground over 430 feet. We were taken into the control room of where rocket engines are tested - inside joke (where pigs fly!)! The employees of mass were not only knowledgeable, but friendly and willing to answer all questions asked. I am so excited to take my girls back for open house tours over the next few years! I love that one of their three directors is from Puerto Rico. With the right support and hard work you can be anything you want to be!

We were not the first tour of the day...l so we got the bum's rush at times... they do have a gift shop still open... BUT... the larger exhibit / museum space is closed... it has been moved to the Great Lakes Science Center. Soooo... if you are looking to let your kids crawl and explore head to the Science Center... if you are looking to get a great geek's view of one of the departments and talk to staff take the guided tour as early in the day as you can.

There are 404 to get as of this writing in May of 2014, and one of them is the David Berger National Memorial found on the grounds of Mandel Jewish Community Center in Beachwood, Ohio. Frankly, it was on a fluke that we even stopped here. We were exploring other National Parks and National Historic Sites in NE Ohio, and our Fodor's America's National Parks listed this as one of the 369 National Park sites as of the 1996/1997 printing. We investigated it online, and sure enough, this somewhat lonely statue south of the main entrance of the Mandel JCC is one of our nation's few National Memorials. Designed by David E. Davis, an internationally renowned Cleveland sculptor, the work has had several homes since it was authorized by Congress as the David Berger National Memorial on March 5, 1980 (Public Law 96-199). Since the fall of 2006 it has been at it's current location after being restored at McKay Lodge Fine Arts Conservation Laboratory, in Oberlin, Ohio, in the year or so before its instillation at its current locale. It is a simple, but somehow very moving sculpture honoring all of the athletes and coaches that were murdered by Palestinian Terrorists at the 1972 Munich Olympics. I had no memory that one of those athletes was an America citizen, and Jewish Olympic athlete, David Berger. This sculpture is his National Memorial. The half circles represent 5 broken Olympic circles, the base consists of a support for those Olympic Circles representing each of the slain athlete's, with David Berger's support being slightly different from all the others to represent him individually as the sole lost American citizen in this tragedy. Not much really, but worth a picnic lunch while we learned about the details of a tragedy long forgotten by most, and a man that could easily be totally forgotten if it had not been for this National Memorial to him. Glad we stopped to relearn this part of our American heritage, and would recommend it to you too. Just don't make it THE reason for your trip here, combine it on your way from some of the other great whole day National Parks in this part of Ohio (Cuyahoga, First Ladies NHS in Canton, or Garfield NHS, to name three, two of which we saw on our spring break trip in April of 2014). Interestingly, it is not listed in the current Fodor's America's National Parks edition that I looked through. But it is listed on the National Park Service website. There is a stamp available for your Passport book, but it needs to be obtained at the Mandel JCC front desk, which has specific hours during which it can be obtained from what we found to be a very cheerful and helpful front desk staff at Mandel JCC. Maybe not worth a separate trip to the SE Cleveland metro area to see, but if you are passing through, or close, and you collect Passport stamps as we do, it is a worthwhile National Memorial to visit, and what you learn about David Berger and the Munich Olympic horror is probably a darn good lesson for us all to not forget.

We took advantage of the annual walk on the lower level of the Veterans Memorial Bridge. We did…read morehave to park and walk a little way because the area was so busy. The walk is free and you have to sign a waiver before entering. They made it very easy with staff waiting to help you near the entrance. Dogs are allowed in the walk. They positioned bands at each end of the bridge and one in the middle. There was also a medical station in the event of an emergency. The experience was unique to me. Views of the river were somewhat obstructed by much of the bridge. The walk was down the middle portion so there was no getting close to the edge. This was clearly for safety reasons. I am happy we were able to walk the bridge this year.

ANNUAL TOUR -- I and plenty of residents and visitors got lucky to see what lies beneath the bridge for the annual self-guided bridge tour and lights show (see my attached photos). This free event was part of a series of events around Cleveland that honours the 50th anniversary of the Cuyahoga River catching on fire. On Saturday, 22 June 2019, the Cuyahoga County's Public Works Department department hosted a tour of the Veteran's Memorial Bridge and Subway station. The bridge tour was awesome. The lower deck (dark, abandoned tunnel), is the part of the bridge I got to tour and that's the part that was open for viewing. According to an online source, this part of the bridge has not been used since 1954 when streetcars were discontinued and it is rarely shown to the public. LIGHTS SHOW -- It was amazing!!! I arrived around 9:30pm. There was one section of the bridge where lights moved around in a pattern on the floor and another section where there were string lights hung up. All the lights had different colours. The whole lights display was fantastic and there was music playing too (see my attached photos). The organization of the event was great and police officers were around to keep everyone safe. I read the details online and signed my waiver beforehand. So when I arrived, I didn't have to wait to sign a waiver. Also, there really was no line to enter the bridge. I had about 2 people in front of me when I arrived. Once I got inside the bridge, it was crowded but not horribly so because people came in and out. I really enjoyed this unique opportunity to view the inside of the bridge (below the car level). My favourite part besides the lights show was seeing the old streetcars that were stationed inside; they looked like subway trains. I also loved the downtown Cleveland view of the Flats neighbourhood from the bridge especially the sunset. I recommend the bridge tour to anyone visiting Cleveland during the summer and also to Cleveland residents. I visited Graffiti HeArt this past weekend after seeing their new mural on Instagram. It was a…read morequick bike ride from downtown (passing through Asiatown for treats, of course!). They give artists a platform to share their murals and street art across the city. Most of the eye catching art around the city was made possible by Graffiti HeArt! Their HQ building itself is a mural, titled "Beautifully Destroyed". Another mural shines right behind, facing East 49th. It was completed in August by Beau Stanton and features the iconic Cleveland Guardians of Traffic. I was raised LDS, so coming to a place like Kirtland (which yes, I'll admit, probably seems…read moreentirely random to the average person) was actually a really interesting experience. Some of my ancestors lived in Kirtland, so seeing a piece of my personal history was really insightful and something I'll never forget. My dad, my brother, and I all went on a guided tour around the grounds which is where the Mormon Church moved to in the 1800s. A lot of these buildings are restored originals where you can see what it was like to be in the village during that time. Kirtland itself is actually a really beautiful small town and from what the tour guides told me, it is quite spectacular in the autumn when the leaves change color. The volunteers were very knowledgable and kind young women who told us a lot about the history of the grounds and had fun facts at nearly every turn. Really cute tour and fun if you are into local history!

Wow, such an awesome event! A friend gave my fiancé and I some VIP tickets to the Bourbon Boxcar…read moretasting event this weekend and we both had a great time! The event was at Tenk on the west bank of the Flats and I think it was the perfect venue for it. The general admission line to get in was long and slow, but the VIP line moved pretty quickly! Lucky us. :D It started with a few displays showing water in a cave, wood and grains, along with a guide and prerecorded narrations on how bourbon is made..kinda cheesy and lame. Then we got our drink tokens and VIP wrist bands before boarding a replica boxcar where a cool guy gave an introduction for the event. Four companies were there: Jim Beam, Maker's Mark, Knob Creek, and Basil Hayden's. Each person was given a token for a sample at each bourbon and two tokens for a bar drink. Samples and drinks were great and the place was packed! They also had a caterer serving up pulled pork sliders and biscuits with assorted spreads and toppings. Yumm! We had great night in the CLE!
