I was excited to see it as I'm a fan of comic books and wrote both my M.A. thesis and PhD dissertation about comic book history. It's a private residence, so we only read the signage and took some photos near the signs, but the owners clearly enjoy their historical legacy and care for it well. They have Superman statues visible in their garden and cardboard cutouts of Superman in the upstairs windows. Just know that it's a one-way street and be respectful if you want to read the signage.

With its colorful porch flowers and new siding, the former Siegel residence is the best-looking home in a hardscrabble neighborhood. It's still lived in as a house, and its current owners have said they will give a local Superman society first crack at buying it when they leave. In return, the society helps to keep the place up now. "Jerry wasn't popular," the sign notes, but he "gave us something to believe in." and visit only once if you must....

Very exciting to be in his neighborhood for a few hours. The neighboring stores and restaurants were a lot of fun to browse; especially the independent bookstore and a record shop that his cousin works at, fortunate find since he pointed us to the park. The space is set very nicely - with areas for parents to sit that are shady or sunny. The activities are impressive, as the little (big) buildings for the kids to play in really allow for them to use their imaginations to play. Great to see a playground have both the physical activities and imagination type of activities. We really enjoyed it and will return when we're in the area again. The only negative, which doesn't really reduce my rating at all, nor does it keep the kids from having fun, is the fact that some areas do need some repair work. This is why it's important to leave a donation on your way out, if you're able. Hopefully this park can be maintained for years to come!

So on a recent road trip to the Cleveland area (we're from Buffalo NY), we decided to take in some Garfield history. There are three historic sites all within about a half hour of each other: his birthplace, his later home, and his gravesite. We made it to the first two on this trip, Garfield's birthplace being our first stop. Garfield is know as the last of the log cabin presidents. His birthplace cabin is located in a municipal building complex. It is clearly marked from the road, and there is plenty of parking in the lot. Garfield's original birthplace cabin no longer exists, but is known to have been in walking distance from where this careful recreation now stands. No images of his actual cabin exist either, but detailed journal entries about its dimensions and style do, which are the basis for this cabin. When you park, there is a short brick trail that is clearly marked as leading to the Garfield cabin. We visited at a time the cabin was not open, but saw that from April to September there are Saturday tours. We also visited when the weather was less than ideal, so didn't walk the trails behind the cabin. The trail leads to where the actual cabin is speculated to have been. Near the cabin is a statue of Garfield and a few other placards explaining some historical significances. There is also a QR code for a self-walking audio tour. We listened to the audio tour on the drive home, very interesting! This branch has a convent book drop and pick up area. Since it's during COVID there outdoor picnic area is available if you want to hang out side. The parking lot has a few pot holes so watch out. This location is beautiful. The folks that manage it are committed to returning it to it's original wild beauty. They are in the midst of a large project to remove all the invasive species and replant with everything native to the area. So far they have done a marvelous job. I can't even imagine the cost involved. They are taking donations if you want to help. There is a large marsh area you can walk through on raised walkways and see all the work going on. There is another very large wooded area with nicely marked and maintained trails you can stroll through and just enjoy the beauty of the natural habitat. The main lodge is a very nice facility with plenty of room for children to play and classrooms for education. I highly recommend you take a sunny day and visit the "Nature Center at Shaker Lakes". See for yourself. It's a worthwhile project.

A cool memory of the course are the wooden steps leading up to the former first tee. Signs show the distances of the many paths. There is shade, but bring a water bottle. A few benches are along the way. Call to get a tour with a naturalist using golf cars! Along our walk we saw a baby mole scurrying along the grass. A Monarch caterpillar was on a milkweed plant, and the milkweeds are everywhere. Love trees? Lots of oak trees and others line the paths. Redwing blackbirds were chirping. In the mornings and evenings I've was told you can see a lot of deer. A shelter is available for group events. There are a few picnic tables under the trees. More tables are needed. Large parking area. Handicapped accessible.
