There was just one guy assembling all the orders while the others were at the cash register or in the back prepping. Not quite fast food. The shrimps were plump and juicy, while the chicken was flavourful but dry. The tacos are really stuffed to the brim which seems appealing, but in the end was not fantastic as everything exploded out of the tortilla. The chips with salsa isn't too bad of a deal, nice that it came with two salsas. The chips were crispy and toasted, but the ones at the bottom became soggified. read more

I love my burrito bowls, so it was no surprise that I ended up ordering their naked burrito. My naked burrito was piled high, which I loved. No one likes to be skimped out on their food. They have a range of meat to choose from, including the typical carnitas (slow braised pulled pork), pollo achiote (marinated roasted chicken), camarones (sauteed chile lime shrimp), and barbacoa (slow-cooked beef braised in ancho chipotle adobo sauce), which I ended up getting. It also comes with mexican rice, the choice of either black or refried pinto beans (I got the black beans, because I prefer to have the beans whole), cheese, and salsa. I also added lettuce, corn, sour cream, green onions, lime juice, and their hottest sauce, plus one other sauce I forgot the name of. Since it was piled so high, it was somewhat difficult to mix everything up. Overall, it was really delicious, and I enjoyed the barbacoa. It was a lot saucier than I wanted, but I guess that is to be expected, since I did have sour cream and other sauces in it. read more

Nothing wrong with a giant burrito every so often, and this place near my house does it very well. Burrito del Rio is tucked in off River Avenue, a little bit away from the main Osborne Village strip. Regardless it's a well known place that's often busy. It has your typical Mexican-theme set up that you expect for a burrito restaurant. Both times I've been here so far I've had the barbacoa burrito with black beans and cheese. There's also other assortments of toppings that you can add to your burrito. At the end you'll get a giant burrito (regardless of size) at a very affordable price. The reviews here speak for themselves. It's tasty, filling, and will fill you up and beyond. There's always repeat customers here and for a reason too; people know you get incredible value for the food you get here. Service however can be hit or miss. It depends on who's working that day. Not sure if I just ordered wrong, but I did not enjoy my meal here and felt that it was not quality and not worth the money. Sorry Winnipeg, I don't mean to hate. I just find that a lot of food does not equal a good experience. However, I feel like I may be the only one since I have a hunch this place is popular. On the most positive side, I did really enjoy my margarita. The food, not so much. I really didn't enjoy my bare burrito (without the tortilla). The guacamole was tasteless which never helps and I guess I asked for too much hot sauce, but this meal ended up just being mushy. If I was effing up my order, homegirl behind the glass making it, hook a sister up and let me know. The shrimps were miniscule, clearly frozen and not delicious at all. My fellow Yelper Michelle V enjoyed her burrito and it was ginormous, so there's that. I however just didn't think the ingredients were looking so fresh and so good. Highlight of the meal: the homeless guy who asked if I was going to finish my meal and then took my plate to go. Also, they were playing A Tribe Called Quest. I love this place and always enjoy the food here because it tastes fresh and it's quick! But recently I learned that their refried beans is made with BACON!!!! I eat pork but I know others who don't and know that they would be very annoyed to learn that there's pork in the beans. I learned the bacon info from a friend so when I asked staff at the restaurant if there is bacon in the refried beans they said "yes, but we're not allowed to tell people that." I asked why and they said the owner doesn't want people to know the recipe. Um, here's the thing, I make my refried beans with no meat products in there and I assume most people would not even consider asking if the refried beans are vegetarian based. But I find it very off putting that the owner would tell their staff to purposely not to tell people that there's bacon in there. So lesson learned for all those who are vegetarian or avoid pork for other reasons - make sure you specifically ask the items you assume are vegetarian are actually meat free! read more

Dirty interior - all of the tables need a thorough wipe down and fixtures need a dust. Sauce bottles sticky to the touch. Employee behind the counter weighing out meat portions to order. I understand portion control and food cost but prep the portions in the back so they are ready for service. This was taking extra time during a busy lunch and also makes your establishment appear stingy. I opted for no rice and corn so asked for extra lettuce since my burrito was looking a lot smaller than my dining companion's burrito. The employee proceeded to add THREE extra pieces of shredded lettuce (not exaggerating). When I asked for more they got defensive and argued with me. Upgraded to a combo and watched as the corn chips were taken from a store bought bag. From the other reviews of this place we were really expecting a lot better. Try QDOBA - they're super friendly, have a way better variety of free hot sauces and also have house made chips and picked jalapenos. Oh, and better food! read more

You can layer that with some beans (black, retried or both), and some Spanish rice. Next comes the cheese - yes, please! Lettuce? If I must. Choice of homemade fresh salsa - mild, medium or HOT! My tastebuds are weak, I always go with mild. Other options are guacamole and sour cream to cool down that heat. Sprinkle on some cilantro and green onions. Add some jalapenos for the heat lovers. And somehow...like magic...they will make everything fit and wrap it tight. Lastly, stuff that bad boy in between a grill press and your massive burrito is ready. Wow that's a big burrito! I had the carnitas burrito, medium. The burrito was tasty but a little bit to spicy for me, so I couldn't really taste the marination on the meat, unless it was just marinated with peppers. Their salsa could use a little bit more taste, besides tomatoes. The place was clean and it does get busy. You must try it! read more

It's hard to judge a food like tacos and burritos. The ideal burrito should present a balance of flavour, fill you up and leave you licking your fingertips. Burrito Del Rio delivers on all fronts. I'm not a huge fan of the Subway approach to food preparation. I'd rather that the restaurant owner decide how they want to present their cuisine and maybe give me a choice of spice level. If I wanted to build my own burrito I would just make one at home. I go to a restaurant to have someone else do the preparation for me. Despite that I dream about burrito del rio. I crave their burritos like a drunk frat boy at spring break chasing coeds in bikinis. Come to me pork burrito. Let me taste and experience you with my lips and tongue. I will consume you.... errr... This place seems like it's trying to be a local alternative to Q'Doba. The ingredients at the time of my visit looked like they'd been sitting out for a bit. The refried beans had bacon in them, which really annoyed me as I don't eat meat and love refried beans. That kind of undoes most of my reason for coming there. What they referred to as salsa options (mild, medium, hot) didn't quite make sense to me. The mild looked like a bruschetta (pico de gallo), the medium didn't look like a tomato based salsa and the hot while of the right consistency to be called "salsa", was obviously too spicy for me to want! I tried the pico de gallo but it utterly ruined my meal. Too oniony and not my personal thing. The panini press was cute and an interesting touch, I think it can stay. The people serving me were crabby and disorganized however. How could this place be fixed? - Take the bacon out of the refried beans - Offer proper salsa selection, especially if you're offering it as a dip for your nachos - Cheer up! I think until I try some of the other places in the city, La Fiesta is still a better mexican option. Drive to Grand Forks and check out Q'Doba for a cleaner implementation of this concept. read more

Great neighbourhood spot for a quick bite. I am no expert on authentic Mexican food or even Tex-Mex. All I know is that the salsas are freshly made and there's lots of cilantro involved in the proceedings, which is authentic enough for me. Gluten-free folks can enjoy the corn tortilla tacos or my favourite -- a "naked" burrito, where the burrito is served in a bowl sans flour tortilla. The staff can be hit and miss; sometimes they're cool and friendly, other times they're space cadets. They also serve Jarritos soda. read more

This restaurant is great! I always get prompt service and the food is so delicious! Making any combination of burrito or naked burrito (burrito in a bowl sans tortilla) to meet the needs of your cravings is just great! I am always there, the food is always consistently cooked and presented! The only issue, is when you eat in and order the naked burrito they only offer plastic cutlery. This is only a problem as the forks are tiny and flimsy, not very good for eating what is basically a hearty salad. read more

I've been here three times now and can't get enough of it. I had tried Chipotle for the first time last spring in Minneapolis and loved that, really wish we had it in Winnipeg but we don't yet. Burrito Del Rio would be the closest thing we have so I will keep going back. Actually wish their hot salsa was even hotter than it is though. One other "beef" I have with them is that my girlfriend is a vegetarian and they use bacon in their refried beans. Too bad so many places do that since it's not necessary. What a great tiny little restaurant that surely packs in a punch! This Osborne Village gem is just on the main level of an apartment building on River Avenue (just off of Osborne Village in Winnipeg, Manitoba). I have to say it does get quite busy (line up sometimes goes out the door) so plan ahead of time if you need to get back in a hurry to work. The portion sizes are massive. I always get a medium size in chicken and boy am I stuffed 3/4 of the way through it. Come HUNGRY! Everything tastes really fresh. I highly recommend this joint. On my visit to Winnipeg I was craving a fast Mexican lunch. Burrito del Rio popped up on the gps and I was so lucky to have found this little gem! I had a delicious pork taco with lots of fresh greens, black beans and delicious fresh salsa. Lunch cost me less than $5! I loved the variety of toppings and fillings. Mmmmm carnitas. I was worried that there wouldn't been a good place for Mexican in town but this is good. I got a mediano burrito in a combo meal, and it was way more food than I could eat. The carnitas was beautifully seasoned and just spicy enough and they had a nice variety of toppings available to choose from. I particularly like that they have fresh cilantro to sprinkle on top - I can't get enough cilantro. The combo meal came with a ridiculous amount of tortilla chips and some really good guacamole. Guacamole is so easy to screw up, so I'm always impressed when a restaurant gets it right (here up north especially.) They had a nice selection of Mexican drinks to choose from too. I got the mango soda which was ever so yummy. The atmosphere was nice and comfortable, and the counter service was nice, though not quite as speedy as I would expect. Still, no complaints. I originally had a craving for sushi but decided I'd try this place out after my options were narrowing down and it was starting to get dark (I was told not to walk around Winnipeg by myself after dark.) Ended up being pleasantly surprised over how good their burritos were. Fresh ingredients and great taste. Coming from San Francisco, I've been looking all over for a taqueria in Winnipeg. When I heard that this place was opening up, I was really looking forward to it but alas, it's no taqueria (nor a real Mexican burrito joint). I wish they would just open up a Qdoba or Chipotle in Winnipeg since none of the carne asada burritos I've eaten in Winnipeg have ever tasted like anything. The meat here was bland and lacked the char broiled flavor and taste I've been looking for. How is that possible? The ingredients seem healthy enough. Perhaps maybe too healthy which is why it lacks flavor. Their way of preparing burritos is more "authentic" than say, Casa Burrito but finishing it off on a panini press isn't what I'm used to. Since there's no real burrito joint in Winnipeg (yet), I've been settling for the next best thing, shawarma! My search for a nice, big, cheap burrito continues. For a place that models itself after an inner city taqueria, the prices are definitely NOT inner city ($8 for 3 tacos?). There's not much wrong with Burrito del Rio. i had a shrimp burrito and it was delicious. The chef came to the front and put six shrimp directly from the pan onto my burrito! The tortilla is quickly steamed to make it soft, they put lime juice into their sour cream, they have fresh salsa, and the staff was super friendly. Just to update everyone, they have added a vegetarian bean option, black beans, and the girl serving us said "Our refried beans are made with bacon but we also have black beans which are vegetarian". I guess they must have picked up on the fact that vegetarians are left out (my mom is a vege so she was happy about that) My only note is the girl was making my sister and my burritos at the same time and we had almost identicle burritos except my sister asked for no chipotle and the girl put it on both burritos by accident. The girl was super apologetic and offered to make a whole new burrito but my sister said it was A-OKAY and even liked the chipotle in the end! The staff came out to eat while we were there since it was around 2:30pm. They sat directly behind us but we barely noticed. They were very quiet and had appropriate conversation (I didn't have to hear about their friday night) and were really respectful. I was impressed by the food and the service. read more

Not sure what I think of this place yet, I am giving it the benefit of the doubt right now and giving it a 3, it could do better. We stopped by for a quick bite. It started with one of the staff showed up and started to help us, and the rest shuffled out after being call a few time they looked like they did not want to be there. Most of the ingredient used seemed fresh, however the corn was overheated and in some cases hard. Overall ignoring the corn the meal was good. I've never been disappointed with this place -- and I've worked my way through the whole menu over the space of about four months over the summer. It's all good. My advice: pay the extra buck or two and get whatever you want in a grande size. You'll be absolutely stuffed. It's great value for the money. As for the bacon in the beans, when I first went there back in June, they told me that there was bacon in them when they offered them to me. Down side: pop is expensive here. Doesn't bother me so much because I usually get my order to go. Just as well, though, because this place is so popular, it fills up fast, and the line to get served can be brutal if the weather is nice, making conversation difficult at best. I've eaten there 3 times. The first time I had the Beef Burrito. It was broken open before it was grilled making it impossible to pick up to eat. They had no cutlery. I ate what I could with the taco chips they give, but ended up throwing out more than 1/2 of it. A good thing too because it tasted funny/off and I ended up sick that evening. I gave it another chance sometime later and had the same thing, this time as take out. I ended up throwing it out again because it tasted funny/off. At the encouragement of my dentist's receptionist, I tried it a 3rd time. This time I had the chicken burrito. It was passable, but nothing I'd order again. The ambiance is loud. It's a fast food type setting. You order at the counter, carry your basket to the table, and even dump your own trash in the garbage cans. Yet they have a TIP JAR at the register!! read more

Went to Burrito Del Rio last night for a burrito. I visit this place about once every two months. We got there just in time, as a huge lineup started right behind us. The staff here are great, quick and laid back! It was great food! Cleanliness however was substandard! Most tables dirty, piles of garbage and food around the garbage can, and the bathroom...let's just say I learned as a female how to pee standing up! I introduced my brother inlaw to burrito del rio for the first time and he had some looooonnnngggg a$$ strand of blonde hair in his burrito . He was pretty stoked , we thought it was just amazingly cheese . But it was along strand of hair. Other than that , staff should wear hair nets but it ain't gonna stop me for eating there . OMG love the food here!! im totally a devoted customer.Being a latin girl it's hard to find good tasting mexican food in winnipeg. the music is good, the restraunt is clean and the staff are really nice. Love the tacos,the drinks,the burritos and everything about it. Some of the staff are really good looking 2. that other guy with the bad review was an ass.He seemed really arogant. i would have been bitchy to someone with an attitude like that too. When i went there last month i was served by a hot tattoo spanish guy and. the cashier girl with the brown hair was georgous, they were both really helpful.The other staff of guys are hot too and the girls are really pretty. Have been trying out various Mexican style restaurants. Found this one to be so so. I enjoyed Pork Burrito, medium which was a good size. Rest of my family is vegetarian, so it would be nice to have refried beans that are vegetarian. Sorry, black beans while nice, are not what is needed. Found staff to be rushed, and disorganized, but doing best they could. Hard to find napkins and cutlery. Salsa, while I enjoyed it, my companion did not. This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in the world and I go to Mexico City pretty often. Its just a huge beef taco full of rice, beans, corn, re fried beans, lettuce, cheese. Only down side is it can be kind of messy to eat, especially when you are almost finished. I want one right now. read more

A couple weeks ago I attended the river location instead of my usual location of Corydon, despite a friend telling me the service was notoriously bad there. I went in like usual to find what appeared like 2 staff and 1 person not in a uniform behind the counter. The girl that was not in uniform was clearly making her own food while the 2 customers ahead of me were clearly her friends. At this point it was not a problem they all had naked burritos with more food in them than I had ever seen before, I figured today was my lucky day. The girl behind the counter making her food then proceeded to sit down with the other 2 customers which brought me to my turn. The service from the male worker was poor, my friend watching the interaction said this guy clearly doesn't want to help you, his demeanour changed from the previous customers to me. He then proceeded to pull out a scale and weigh my meat which I have never seen before, this wouldn't have been a problem. I just wondered why the 2 customers and the staff members bowls before me didn't get weighed. Why was I so special, I guess their money is better than mine. I proceeded through the process ending up with the smallest bowl I have ever seen which was not filling at all. My friend then to prove a point took me to the corydon location where everything was status quo, service was excellent and the bowl was the normal size. I as well as all my co workers and friends will no longer attend the river location due to the service, we still love the food and want to support the business but will be going to the corydon location from now on. read more
