The overall environment of this restaurant is very fun. The music is loud, the TVs are on and they even have some live music some nights. In terms of the food, I'd say it's mediocre. No flavors jumping out at me. Very plain and simple. It's not bad but there's way better out there. It's my first time in Winnipeg and I was out on a date. I think it's a good date spot! We went there on a Friday night, there were four of us. We ordered 2 pitchers of the Mezcal margaritas, plus I drank 2 separate margaritas, the lime and coconut one. The flavours of the margaritas were okay, but between the 3 of us drinking 2 pitchers we were not even tipsy.. I had 5/6 margaritas and I'm a small girl and did it feel even buzzed.. plus each pitcher was $75 plus tax.. it was a total rip off. We spent over $400 on food and drinks, the food was mediocre. Not authentic Mexican at all. We all had severe stomach aches the next day. I honestly do not recommend eating or drinking here, food is not worth it, over priced and basic. Staff is super friendly! As a girl from Las Vegas, the food isn't quite authentic. But I'm not too sure where to find authentic Mexican food here in Winnipeg ‍. As a person with a disability I cannot recommend this place. All the tables are bar height and do not accommodate wheelchairs. Ironic because from the outside it looks disabled friendly, door opener and handicapped parking right at the door. Fortunately I brought my cane and not my wheelchair because had I come in my wheelchair there wasn't a table that I could eat at. My companion has hip issues so perching at a bar table wasn't ideal. When we asked for more normal seating the best we got was a booth that we had to vacate by 6:45 to accommodate a reservation. The prices are steep even with happy hour prices. There was an error on our bill and the attitude we got when we questioned it was incredible. The food was ok but not worth the prices. In short we won't be back. read more

I only had drinks and enjoyed the live music. Prices were on par with the area so no complaints. Decor and staff were friendly and seated me right away. Definitely targetted towards younger crowds that are part of the hipster movement. Overall a good place, don't bring kids. read more

Terrible Service (delivered thru Grubhub) We ordered online at the restaurant and later wanted to modify the order. There was no way to do that. No phone number where someone picks up the phone. The phone access is fully automated. They shouldn't accept take-out orders and then provide no service for them. When the food arrived we were really disappointed. We ordered the pork burrito and the steak burrito. There was hardly any meat and there was no flavor at all, totally flat. I've had better meals at Mexican chain restaurants. We tried literally everything on the menu just to make sure we could find something that tasted authentic. When we first walked in, it took more than 20 minutes to get served. We ordered a steak dinner and were not impressed, but the worst of it was when the restaurant turned into a "nightclub" and we were asked to move so that the bartender's friends could belly up, even though we were still eating and trying to get drinks. When my husband told this to the bartender, the tender told us to get the **** out if we didn't like it, and go back to where we came from. This is the place to be on a Saturday night... and that was in the winter! I've heard about their patios and I can't wait to try out La Roca in the summer. We had a reservation for 7pm and it was ready when we got there. The place is massive and it was full, but that didn't impact service at all. The service was fantastic. Food and drinks came out surprisingly fast - for any night but especially a busy Saturday night. Additionally, all of the staff were so willing to help. Plates were cleared away really fast by any staff walking by and by the super eager bus boy. Seriously, the bus boy genuinely seemed to love being there and it just added to the great dynamic. The food was surprisingly filling and was super tasty. The taco menu is extensive and super tasty. I was so pleasantly surprised with the amount of sides that came with it (two!) and we didn't need the appetizerthat we ordered (although, there was no regrets about that either)! I just really wasn't expecting the amount of food that came with it for the price point - bonus! We were told when we arrived that there was another party booked for our table for 9pm, which wasn't a problem at all. We were just frustrated because around 8:45 we were approached and told that it was time to leave. We were fully prepared to be out by 9 and I understand that the party arrived early but we still had time according to what we were told originally. Have been anxiously awaiting the opening of La Roca. They did a great job on pre-opening promotion and generating buzz. Plus the refreshed location is looking great. Consider this rating an extremely generous 3 as they have a lot of kinks to work out. Had reservations for 7:30 and our table wasn't ready until 7:55. The service was spotty to poor but I have a hard time playing the servers as they seemed to be doing the best they could with what amounted to poor logistics and organization on the part of the restaurant. They apologized often. The food was decent-to-good, the atmosphere started great but got lamer as it become more club-like, the cocktails were excellent. However, miscues like being out of avocados, at a Mexican restaurant where virtually 80% of the plates have avocado or guacamole listed as an ingredient is a massive fail. When asking about allergy information, the waitress often referenced the "box" or "boxes" their food comes in (such as their tortillas). As a place that boasts fresh, on-site made food this seemed an unfortunate, inadvertent discovery. Our table was split - my tacos were delicious, the trio salsa was excellent, the corn and the Mexican beans all delicious. While my dinner mates had mixed results with the skinny tacos, dry shrimp, and the poorest offering being the taco soup. When it came to finishing off the meal, my mescal was only ok and they had run out of coffee so the 2 Spanish coffees (she gave "1/2 the remaining coffee in the restaurant" to each ...?) were virtually undrinkable. In summary, had this business been open longer than a week my review would be scathing. As it is, there is plenty of upside, they have a great vibe (the live guitar was far better than the DJ), great location, and when their patios open should be a very welcome addition to the downtown scene. Hopefully they work out the kinks and get a better avocado supplier and take advantage of the upside, otherwise, I guess we'll see if the next restaurant there can have as great a logo as La Roca. read more

Very disappointing Had a 6pm reservation for a birthday party for approx 16 people. Service was horrible. Very slow servers who are more concerned about talking to eachother. Menu had little selection. With 60% being tacos 8 different ways and very over priced. When food came it was a guessing game of who ordered what a they had no idea what the intensity were. Portions were small. Bill came with item that were not even ours. Ending up being kicked out of our seats as they had book someone else for a 9pm reservation. The manager rudely said "Well guys I need you to finish your drinks and get up. The other party is here" Someone had made a reservation for 30 people for the patio on the roof. Well the servers hade Ron rudely kick people off the patio for a party and give them our seats. As the servers were all pissed off. This all went on as the Owner sat at the bar and drank his Corona's. He thought he would apologize by buying 8 of us a shot.... which we watched the bar tendrils pour 2 oz of tequila, lime and ice. My friends and I got there and the bouncers were extremely rude right off the bat and one of the fat lard bouncer men kept yelling at us for no reason. They wouldn't let us in before the 10:30 time so we would conveniently have to pay cover. NOT to mention it was frigid cold outside and they would not let us in despite it not being busy at all. On a business trip, found this place on Yelp, very modern looking bar, expecting it to be full on a Winnipeg Jets play offs away game, there were only 20 people, I guess not being a sports bar, however it did have quite a few screens. I had three tender pork tacos which were delicious. I wanted to order the burrito but the bartender said it was the biggest dish they had so I opted for a smaller size meal, 3 tacos for $10 with a bottle of Modelo Negra beer. Having been to Mexico City last month it was an authentic tasting food experience with really smooth dark Mexican beer to go with. I would highly recommend it, a change from chain restaurants. As for not many Jets fans here, the atmosphere was just right, not crowded nor loud. Will definitely come back again. read more

As a Mexican, when i moved here I was happy to hear that a new restaurant / bar was to open in Winnipeg. Classy and a bit upscale is what I perceived. As I went in Nope nope. First thing that will hit you is the noise, a bit too loud and echoish, SECOND thing you'll notice is now cold they keep it. Why? I have no idea, and we are in a hot season now. For a Mexican themes place this restaurant has nothing Mexican about it inside... NOTHING! Sad that no one did the research to find the abundant Mexican culture and style of my people to give LA Roca a beautiful decore. It looked like someone just put some plain lights up, threw in a couple of chairs and tables and opened the door for business. The closes thing to Latin culture I noticed inside was Enrique Iglesias and Shakira music playing on the speakers. And those two are not Mexican. SERVICE : These bartenders need to go back to bartending school. Now I'm not saying all of them are bad but the one I got looked mixed a typical Margarita for me and it was so sour. My wife asked for a Mango Virgin Margarita and I swear the girl couldn't even do that right. Gave her a gross sour lime drink that was not drinkable at all. Many of the bartenders were so overwhelmed that their hands trembled of nervousness while mixing their drinks. Even spilling them at one point. Portions of these drinks are off and the taste not good. It's sad that the customers wont know how many wonderful creations of Latin drinks are out there that if someone would just put the time and effort into finding them, Winnipeg would flock to LA Roca all the time. FOOD: We ordered a freaking "ridiculously overpriced" plate of tacos AL Pastor that came with 3 small tacos for $16. Fuck that. FUCK that!!! NEVER AGAIN . I Can get 16 tacos for $16 in L.A. (AND GOOD TACOS!!!) Now I come from a place where the size of the tacos meets those of LA Roca. but in no where on this planet does the taste of these tacos come close to those of the typical stand I could find at the corner block by my friends house in the hood back in L.A. I mean the dirtiest food truck back home had better tasting tacos than this place. First, the meat was dry and not juicy at all. the seasoning was bland and the tortillas were cold. Points for adding pineapple to the Tacos. THANK GOD for the salt I asked for that no one seemed to know her it was. I don't know who they have cooking this food but he must not have EVER tasted Mexican food in his life. I swear this place needs a taste tester to a prove the menu before they sell it. Coming home from BC I was excited to see that someone had done something with this incredible space, the exterior gives 155 Smith a west coast vibe. Unfortunately a couple layers of paint and some ambiance can't make up for the horrendous service. The restaurant was busy, I opted to sit at the bar, as I was dining solo. It took a decent amount of time for any of the bartenders to acknowledge me. I asked for a menu, and after perusing I was excited to see the chips were made in house. I asked the bartender (my server) if the chips contained any gluten, he was unable to answer the question, and replied "I'm not here early enough to know that." This place is definitely not authentic, everything tastes the same . I had the burrito bowl I wasn't to excited for it . My friend had a chicken burrito with refried beans , with a hefty serving of sauce . With our meals we asked for extra spicy , the verdict was far from sizzling . Quite possibly the worst dining experience in the city. We were very excited to try this new place and had plans to go with our friends all week. When we showed up, we were greeted by 5 ladies at the front (one of whom seemed to be the manager) and were told "no, we have no room". No wait time, no reason, just a hard no. We asked if there is a wait time and they seemed offended that we asked and explained that they had reservations coming in at 9. It was 7:15pm. Once they figured out that they could flip a table in that timethey took us to one of the many empty tables. Then we sat at our table for 25 minutes waiting for a server or someone to come say hello to us. Our server never came and we were all having such a terrible time that someone suggested we leave and go to another restaurant. We left before we even had a chance to order a drink, and were in their establishment for over 30 minutes at this point. We left and went to a different restaurant, and within 20 minutes had food and drinks at our table and everyone's moods had changed. I sincerely hope that the staff, management and owners know what a terrible experience they are providing so that they can change... This restaurant is close to the MTS centre and I would hate to have visitors try this restaurant and equate it with Winnipeg dining. That being said, I won't ever be back to see if it will, and neither will anyone I know. read more

I had the pleasure of dining at La Roca on Saturday October 29th, 2016 with a friend. Both of us were/are very impressed, have already recommended this restaurant to friends and will most definetly return. In fact, I have a friend visiting from Edmonton soon and have already told her we MUST go there. Beautiful room, wonderful Mexican music playing plus at one point in the evening there was a guitar player who was very, very good. I have spent tons of time in Mexico and the food was as close to authentic as possible. All the staff plus a gentleman who I assume is the manager, were friendly, attentive and very well versed on the various menu items. Great spot! The Panko fish tacos are pretty unreal. Margaritas are all hand made (not full of sugar and blended) and their two patios are a great place to spend an evening. Don't know what these other negative reviews are all about, the place has definitely got something going for it. read more

I am sure the only reason this place doesn't have better ratings yet is because it is new. We went for dinner last night to kick off my friend's bachelorette party. Although they lost our reservation, they quickly made space for us on the patio. The owner came out to welcome us personally and all the staff were extremely accommodating. Both the food and drinks were delicious (and we sampled a lot of the menu). I would definitely recommend this place to celebrate your next occasion. read more
