I have to make a confession. I didn't grow up with burritos, and even in places considered excellent, I think having a slightly warm, limp wheat flour tortilla around fabulous meat and veg is actually not the greatest idea. I still enjoy burritos for the filling, and I need my starch so burrito bowl is not an option for me either, but the limp tortilla never was my favourite.
Now at Burritos and Blues I tried the quesadilla which mentioned a toasted tortilla - and I do like toasted. For a moment I must say I expected some corn tortillas as with the quesadillas in Azteca, as wheat was not explicitly mentioned on the menu, but I could have guessed that. I also didn't realize I would give up on the beans which I do like a lot and the rice (which I can easily do without) for the privilege of toasting, but so be it, all the other good veggies were still in. They seemed to be a bit stingy on the portions, especially for the guac which costs extra (although I had a voucher so it was a fixed very low price anyway) - but it in the end I really really enjoyed the final product, although before the toasting I wasn't so sure if I would. The veggies were all tasty, the cheese was nicely melted as well, and the steak which looked a bit dry was delicious too. As for the salsa, I'm not sure if I got the hottest or second hottest grade in the end, was nice, hot, but not overwhelming. I couldn't taste the sour cream which was acceptable (and I didn't imagine it out of a squeezy bottle) - but I also couldn't taste the guac, which I wouldn't be happy about if I paid 70c for it. Maybe it'd be best to serve that extra in a little dipping bowl so I could go for it and actually taste it.
Still, the flavours were great - the quesadilla had what I am missing in a burrito and I felt good afterwards. The music was nice as well, although it felt a bit weird being the only customer inside. The rest of the interior design was modern, but very unspectacular as well. Customers might change the atmosphere, but alone it was very lonely, there were no pictures on the wall and no reading material either which could have entertained me. I found a "Totally Dublin" magazine on my way out, but it was so badly placed that I didn't find it when I actually was looking for it.
Still - the flavour was very nice and for sure I'll come back for the food. I'm ending up at 4.5 stars but because of the non-tasteable guac (good avocados in Ireland are hard to find) and the lonely atmosphere I decided for 4. I'll be back and revisit this too though! read more
