If I could give these guys 10 stars, I would -- Rick saved my butt last night!…read more I run a YouTube channel about the desert, and yesterday I took an afternoon drive out to Tecopa with one of my viewers, who suggested I drive his rental car rather than putting extra miles on my rig. We enjoyed a peaceful soak in the hot spring, then figured we'd take the scenic way back along Mesquite Valley Road...a well-graded gravel road that passes through a beautiful but EXTREMELY desolate valley. About 6 miles from the paved highway, we stopped to check out some sand dunes...and since I didn't have any pockets, I left the car key on the driver's seat. Not wanting to drain the battery, I closed the door and wandered off to watch the sunset. Well, guess what? It was one of those modern cars where the door automatically locks after a certain amount of time -- so when we got back to the car, we realized we were locked out!! We could see the key laying on the driver's seat, plain as day, but there was nothing we could do to get to it short of breaking a window. And you know how those rental car companies are -- no telling how much they would have charged my friend for a broken window! By now it was getting dark, and chilly (the low that night was supposed to be down around 25°!!!), and there we were: stranded on a lonely desert road that sees very little traffic -- especially on a Tuesday evening. The odds of someone coming by to help us were pretty remote, and there is zero cell signal in Tecopa...so it seemed our only option was to walk 6 miles to the paved highway and try to flag down a ride to someplace where we COULD get a call through to a locksmith who would be willing to drive way out to the middle of nowhere on a cold night. Meanwhile, we were both wearing flip-flops and short summer clothes...and it was getting COLD! Thankfully, at least I had my wool serape to wrap around me against the wind as we set off toward the highway in the gathering gloom. I happened to check my phone a ways down the road from the car, and found that I DID have cell signal!! Not much; just two measly little bars...but it was enough to get a call out. First we tried AAA, which took two different calls, three different operators and about 30 minutes for them tell us that they won't come out if you're not on a paved road. Arrrghh! By now it was totally dark, and really cold -- what to do? This was a new type of fix to find myself in -- no 4 wheel drive, rear locker, tow strap or winch could get me out of this one! AAA suggested we call the Highway Patrol or 911...but instead, I got the number of a locksmith from Pahrump (the closest town) and gave him a call. Despite it being after dark on a cold night, a guy named Rick from Mobile Locksmith of Pahrump said he would head right out -- but he was over an hour away! There was nothing to do but wait...but MAN, was it cold!! The wind was whipping our bare legs and frozen toes, but there was nothing we could do -- we didn't even have a lighter or any matches to start a fire. Normally, I roll with all kinds of emergency gear in my rig....but my rig was parked back in Vegas We did have blankets --but they were locked up in the car, tantalizingly out of reach. D'oh!! We couldn't even take shelter behind the car, since I didn't have cell signal there...only up the road a ways. So we passed the time walking back and forth, hunched into the wind with my poncho wrapped around me. Since it was pitch dark with no moon, I had to use the flashlight app on my cell phone, so that we didn't trip on the rocky road...but I didn't want to drain my cell phone battery, in case the locksmith had a problem or couldn't find us. YIKES!! Thankfully, right on time about an hour after we called him, we saw a pair of headlights bumping along in the distance. I've never been so happy to see headlights in my life!!! By this time we had walked over a mile from the car, but Rick was kind enough to let us jump in the back of his van to get out of the wind, and ride with him. All his gear was rattling around in the back because of the bumpy gravel road, and he remarked that we were getting the deal of a lifetime (he had quoted us $190 on the phone), because he hadn't realized the road we were on was that bad Anyway, once we got to our vehicle it took Rick all of 30 seconds to pop the door open, and we were on our way. We paid him a little extra for his trouble, but I feel like it wasn't enough. So at least I can give him this social media shout out -- if you find yourself in need of a locksmith anywhere in the Pahrump area, give Mobile Locksmith a call! All's well that ends well -- I got back to my own rig around 10 p.m., with the heater running full blast, and celebrated surviving the ordeal with some carne asada fries from Roberto's taco shop. Called multiple times to get a quote for someone to install a floor safe. The gentleman on the…read morephone said the person to give the quote wasn't available and we will call you back. They NEVER called me back. I went to Home Depot and rented the equipment I needed to install it myself. I had no experience in sinking anchors into a concrete slab but it wasn't too bad with the right tools and I saved a ton of money. I can't recommend a business that won't keep a commitment as small as a call back.
