Bed was comfortable, loved the pillows. The hotel seemed to be stingy with the towels. 2 nights and only 2 towels. The bathtub faucet was hard to turn on and maneuver to a good water temperature. Gave up on a shower the day we left, the knob would not budge. Even if it wasn't the huge homeless guy at breakfast both days we were there, and the side door propped open since the card reader didn't work, I would not return due the mustiness. Horrible smell. I'm not sure if this is considered a good part of town.

They had complimentary fruit and coffee/tea available. I did not buy anything from their snack stand, but it was fully packed with all those travel favorites. A unique option about this hotel is that it had a grill and firepit on their patio. We just had to get the all clear from the attendant to use them. We stayed in a 4th floor king room that had a full fridge, stove top, dishwasher, work knook, and mini couch. The bathroom was spacious but there was not a tub and the toilet seat was a hard close so that caused some noise. The bed was comfortable and sheets/towels in the room were very clean. The tv was semi smart so you could log in to Netflix or Amazon prime if you wanted. Breakfast in the morning was standard continental: cereal, yogurt, breads, sausage, omelet, waffle, potatoes, and breakfast sandwiches. I really appreciated having a suite with accommodations, including a fridge, dishwasher, desk and TV I could plug a computer into. Made spreading out and doing work a breeze. (I was in what they call a one bedroom so the bedroom is separate from the living space allowing me to have a colleague stop by and talk shop without being in a bedroom, which would be weird.) The staff is really friendly and helpful. Like, all of them. And they have a small conference room as needed. The place stayed busy with groups in and out. Has a nice outdoor seating area, including grill space and fire pit. The only change I would make is that the front patio allows smoking, so not being a smoker myself, it could sometimes be less pleasant if there were several people smoking at once. But more often than not, that was not the case. It would be better if there was an area mildly segregated from the main seating imo. My colleague was not a fan of the loud traffic noise in his room. You can ask to be on the side that's not noisy, although I am not bothered by that myself so it wasn't an issue for me. I will say it is very loud (on the traffic side) if that's a thing that bothers you because it's a 50 mile an hour road and there would be trucks using brakes or blowing horns on occasion that I heard when I was getting up for one reason or another at night. And (at least to me) a surprising number of people driving Hemi's or show mufflers. They actually provide earplugs next to the bed, which is a nice touch for those who are bothered. (But if you are, just ask when you call or show up to be away from the roadway or sleep with earplugs or headphones.) Breakfast buffet was the standard Marriott type spread, much better than the average in terms of freshness and attentiveness to temperature from staff (full disclosure, I don't eat breakfast so this is my observation when I would go get coffee). I personally liked the coffee (for hotel coffee, mind you), my colleague not so much. I did try to walk to some of the nearby restaurants to get a little fresh air and can tell you this area is not made for walking, so I would not recommend that. Felt like I was taking my life in my own hands at that point.

Check-in was easy and the clerk was friendly. The room was clean and nice. The bed is comfortable and the tv was easy to use. The hotel is quiet at night and I had the best night sleep in a long time. Rooms are equipped with coffee maker, fridge, microwave, hair dryer and safe. The WiFi was easy to connect. A small workout room is available for guests. Coffee, tea and hot chocolate are available all day in the lobby. The Seattle's Best coffee is good. I saw several conference rooms and an outdoor patio available. A lounge is supposed to be open in the evenings, but was closed during our visit. A complimentary breakfast is served daily. The breakfast was very good with hot and cold options. My husband made a cinnamon waffle and a full plate of sausage. I had eggs with a warm biscuit. The orange juice is good. Bananas were a bit overripe, but other fruit was fresh. Note: There is an added charge for use of the safe, but we did not use the safe, so we were refunded the fee. We told the desk manager upon check out. I'm not sure why they even have this surcharge ($1.75) as it is annoying and detracts from the great stay. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again and recommend highly.

I was told at check in that if I used the in-room safe, I would be charged $1.87. What that means to me is that I will not be charged if I don't use it. I did not use it but was charged anyway. It is just one more of those petty charges corporations tack on in order to market the room at one price but charge another. Perhaps it is silly to react this way to a $2.00 charge, but I resent it.

Parking outside the hotel is restricted to guests after 10 pm, by which time you must have moved into a parking garage that is a short walk away (also, a pay-to-park). But, as long as you are aware of this before check-in, it's not a big deal. We loved the design of our room. We were traveling with a 12 year-old, and he enjoyed having the sofa bed area as his own space within the room, complete with his own drawer for storage in that area. The little alcove leading into the bathroom was a nice space for staging our packing and unpacking. Just a thoughtfully designed room that we appreciated. Now for the down sides, and reason for only 3 stars. Housekeeping needs some additional training, or some better/more staff. They are clearly not *cleaning* certain areas/things in the room, but only spot-checking for visible debris. The shower floor was very slippery from what seems to be layers of spilled soap that just lay on the floor and accumulate because it seems they must just be rinsing down the shower at best, but not actually cleaning it. Our son started to pull out the sofa bed, but then quickly put it back and announced that he would just sleep atop the sofa but not use the bed, because the sheets that the sofa bed were made up with had "purplish red stains" on them. We stayed for 2 days, and at no point did housekeeping refill the body wash or shampoo containers in the shower, though they were pretty much empty on arrival, and after 2 days of showering we couldn't squeeze any more out of them. They must be waiting for a guest to alert them or complain when containers are empty, which is not the way to do things. You would think checking the dispenser levels would be part of routine housekeeping. The breakfast room looked better than it was. Again, it's a nice big, beautiful space, but on our first day half the items weren't stocked, the eggs were hard like they'd already been sitting for hours at 7:30 am, and the coffee was old and cold, again, at 7:30 am when breakfast service starts on a weekend at 7. It must have been sitting there from overnight. On Day 2 there were more selections available, but the "potatoes" (tater tots) were stone cold at 8 am, and I didn't even try the eggs again. Overall, we give 3 out of 5 starts because it was a nice, new property with some really enjoyable touches, but improvements with housekeeping and breakfast are needed. I suspect the place actually *looks* more clean than it actually is, because it is so new.

Second, family has stayed here before and gave the hotel raving reviews. I'm not sure why. Generally the family that gave this hotel raving reviews has a certain level of standards which I would assume would have meant more than our experience. The first room we were given was infested with flies. We killed 10 within minutes and after that 6 more just showed up immediately. So we went down and asked for another room. We were given one with a jacuzzi. No, we have no plans on haul v that and there are several reasons why. The first and second rooms are clean. But, it's clear the hotel is in a serious need of updating and refreshing. Now, I understand a few things about this location. First, it's a small town and what I assume to be a privately ran hotel. On our first night there was maybe 10 people here in a hotel that probably has 100 rooms? So my point here is income probably does not generate the funds necessary to save for dramatic improvements of any scale or variety. Being in a small town there is literally only a few options to stay unless you drive to a bigger city like Richmond closer to an interstate, etc. doing a google search I found three choices in town and this appeared to be the best. Rooms are not that awesome. First room had the aforementioned fly infestation, toilet seat was well used and worn down to what appeared to be black wood underneath. (I hope) Second and first room both had outdated and well worn and in some places town carpet. Rubber molding around the walls near floors were torn away in spots and drywall plaster was cracked or busted in spots in and around corners in bath and other places. Parking lot is dimly lit unless you park right by the building where huge wall lamps give a 1970's incandescent yellow hue of light that somehow bounces off the building good enough to illuminate the front of your car. There are light posts that are from what I can tell the size of a battery powered throw away infomercial lantern. In fact. They are positioned about 30 feet from each other on the exterior of the lot and are most certainly solar powered as they were casting no light at 6 am on anything at all. So, if lot safety is a concern of yours and what I have said already is not enough to turn you off then book away. I believe the rate per night was around $140 and that might have been with taxes and fees.. again. If you are one of three hotels in town you get the luxury of slapping a charge on a rate and seeing if anyone bites. They offer continental breakfast. But, in looking at the quality of the offerings you might be wise to choose coffee or a preserved yogurt cup. I was even skeptical of the coffee as the coffee urns on the bun coffee maker looked like the last time they seen soap and water was before dish washers were invented. I'd skip the pastries and dried cereal which looked stale.. I'd even skip the waffle maker and aerosol can of butter and syrup mix as well. Maybe go try and find the McDonald's or a Cracker Barrel even farther away.. Finally, for the smokers or the smoke smoker haters that are reading this post. This hotel most certainly used to be a smoking hotel. How the peeled off signs on the entry doors and on occasional rooms that have not yet been peeled off state its non smoking. But, as my wife has recently stopped smoking and is keen to smells that never bothered her before.. she can still smell the lingering odors in the room which shout out it has seen decades of cigarette smoke. Just bring some Febreeze and that should tame it down. First nights rest? Well, the rooms are quiet overall, I could not hear talking or television noises from guests next to us. I did hear what sounded like a t-Rex walking around in the room uostairs this morning. I assume hunting for prey for breakfast. Bed slept ok for one that has clearly seen a few decades of use. Sheets are alright. But, clearly are the low end. Comforter is well used and low end. But, it appears all was clean. However I elected not to freak myself out and dig deep on this one for usual things that would creep someone out. I should point out that front desk clerk at check in was nice. We booked through a third party website and she had trouble matching up our credit card with reservation. She was a new clerk though. We did not get the usual questions like make and model and plate number and that kind of thing. But, we did not get any arguments as to switching rooms when we brought up the fly infestation either. Almost like they knew.. But, now that you read this you can make your own choice. It certainly may will give us cause to ask family.. Why did you think it was so nice? Maybe it was at a point in the past. But, now it's just "ok" IMO.

Reading some of the old reviews I was a bit worried but I did notice that they have improved things…read morea lot. Fresh paint, clean room & bathroom, new carpets. A/C was working great, turned it on then went for supper, gone less than an hour and it was cool enough in room we had to turn the temp up. Had a good night sleep and was able to enjoy the continental breakfast. Seems like about a dozen cars there but it was a weeknight. I would recommend staying there because it is better than driving 30 minutes to a corporate hotel that will charge more. They have improved a lot considering the area has had some layoffs and cutbacks.
