An update to the review below. So, the folks at the company contacted me via email with and apology AND refunded the amount of my purchase (thank you). The package finally arrived a week after it was supposed to. I was still kinda' pissed and was ready to throw it in the garbage. Thankfully, I'm a cheap bastard, well, that and my mother would come back from the dead and slap me for wasting food. In any event, I'm glad I did decide to keep the two rolls I ordered... OK, 1/2 happy. The Cinnamon and Apple was not my favorite, probably because there wasn't enough cinnamon for my taste and even though most of it is now gone, I still haven't tasted any apple. The Lemon Kolachi roll, on the other hand, was FRIGGIN' AWESOME. I'm sorry I promised a friend a piece. It was delightfully tart and very lemon-y. This won't disappoint if you try it. I didn't think I would say this after the debacle, but I will probably, at some point order another Roll. I suspect they will go to General Quarters when they see my name on an order an station a guard every step of the way. So, thanks to the staff to making right a problem with the order. Thanks for making an awesome product (well, one of them). Thanks. I would like to say the product the sell is delicious, but as of today I have not received my package which was supposed to arrive three days ago. I am at a loss as to how a package could leave their facility, make it to my post office, be out for delivery then POOF... into the Twilight Zone. First it's out for delivery, then declared late and then back at the Pennsylvania USPS facility on its way to me. Then it's a delayed package but "on its way" and now, it's back in Pennsylvania on its way to the next facility??? So, I have no idea where my package is. Of course, contacting them (no phone calls, the store knows nothing about on line orders, according to them) gets me the automated reply of "here is what to expect next." I guess nothing, since that is the response I got. Now, I've just written and told them I don't even want the items and to refund my purchase price and send me a label to return the items... assuming of course, they ever get here. I hope they follow through. Next step is turning this over to the credit card company and they have sharper teeth than I. So, to everyone, if you have had a good experience with this company, GREAT. If any of you have had a horrible experience like I have, well, I'd say we could commiserate over Kolachi... but someone would have to drive and pick one up in person because we sure don't want to do mail order. read more

I ordered the walnut nut roll, the nut cookies, the apricot cookies, and the nut raisin roll. I haven't eaten the nut raisin roll yet but in less than a week the other 3 items are gone! The nut roll is as close to my Grandmothers as you can get. I definitely will be ordering more from this company and sharing it with my family and friends. Soooooo good! read more

Never pass up the opportunity to order the BEST Butter Maid products. I am not a real sugary lover, so these are FRUIT tasting (the blueberry walnut is now my favorite). The Lemon is just too good to share and the Apricot...well... it's mine too. Hubby loves the Poppyseed and won't try another because others don't come close. I live in Florida and miss the kolachi's I used to eat in New Jersey. I saw an ad for Butter Maid Bakery and ordered one poppy seed and one nut. They were delicious. I then ordered the same for my mother in NJ and she too loved them. Really good prices and the process of ordering to shipping was super quick. I highly recommend them. read more

I have ordered twice...Kolachi Rolls(walnut , poppyseed, pumpkin, apricot Kiffles and walnut horns/crescents) Fresh arrival and delicious! So far a great experience! San Diego does not have much Eastern European Pastry options so this is great for the Holidays and more! I actually use to live in Northern Ohio near where this business is so I knew it would be authentic. It is so sad that my cousin ordered me a Kolachi for a surprise. When I received it , the nut roll looked like a flat pancake with goo running out of it! We have been ordering from this company for some time and have never had a problem . When she wrote to them they just fluffed her off as if to say , toooo bad ! At some point during the holidays, I received a box of 2 dozen chocolate chip cookies from-- well, at the time, I thought they were straight from heaven! Turns out, they were from Butter Maid Bakery. Unbelievably delicious. I've stopped making cookies; I'll just get mine from Butter Maid. I've also tasted their apricot kiffles (what my family called them) and we are hard pressed to find anything better. I ordered family traditional pastries from this on line bakery way ahead of Christmas planing a surprise for us as we have suffered a loss of the one who baked. I saw that they deducted the money from my bank account immediately, but did not send the pastries which I found out after waiting until a week before Christmas. However, they denied taking the money at first, but my bank pursued. Finally, they apologized for the mistake of forgetting they had charged me for nothing, found the order, and promised to return my money. Three weeks later, I had to contact them again. Today, I see they finally refunded my account. Meanwhile, I went without the pastries so loved by my family. It was really disappointing, so stay on top of this company if you order from them. No one spoke to me personally or offered to compensate at all just a polite apology and explanation that they went on vacation all done by email. read more

My grandmother passed away a couple years ago and I wish I had paid more attention to how she made her nut rolls and lady locks. No one can make them like she used to, but Butter Maid is practically spot on! The lady locks came to my house just in time for Christmas. I ordered two nut rolls and some apricot cookies. They arrived so fast and were amazing! They tasted just like my family recipes. I cannot say enough about the quality of both. Wonderful walnut Kolache pasteries! I have now placed several orders over the past year. Some were gifts and some were for us to enjoy, all were delicious. These are very similar to the Croatian Povitica, so if you enjoy that, I am sure you will enjoy the Kolache. The pasteries arrive quickly, and nicely packaged. I have ordered several at one time so I receive free shipping, and have actually frozen a loaf or two. They freeze nicely and are still bakery fresh when thawed. Although my grandparents were from Eastern Europe, I have never had kolach, so I decided to order the chocolate walnut kolach from Butter Maid Bakery. However, I was extremely disappointed with the taste and texture. Basically, it was a tasteless, soft mass with not a hint of chocolate or nutty flavor. I was surprised to read a couple of other reviews saying everything was too sweet because this wasn't sweet at all. Not at all. Perhaps they were talking about other products besides kolach. On the plus side, it arrived quickly and was very fresh, but if you are looking for something that is chocolatey and nutty, this is not the thing to spend what is a significant amount of money on. read more

My husband and I had a late evening home made cookie attack, but were both too tired to make them. Checked Yelp and low and behold my fellow Yelpers had pinpointed a place less than 5 minutes away. We arrived just within minutes of closing time, but were greeting warmly. Not only were we greeting warmly, but we were handed over two enormous peanut butter cookies with buckeyes that were still warm. We hurried back to the car for a small taste as we headed down the streets to get a latte to wash them down. Yummo! We will be back soon to try some other treats in the near future. They do have some really good chocolate chip cookies, but I used to come here all the time for their cut out cookies during different holidays. They had some of the best, with perfect icing and soft cookies but unfortunately got rid of them for I don't know why. I bought from Butter Maid Bakery because I was told they use real BUTTER and not Margarine. I went to the web site and bought the lady fingers for $32 bucks for two dozens. I received them in something the size of a plastic side order dish 4 inch x 4 inch. So I open the big box they sent this little thing in and I was floored by the size of these lady finger. I ate one and knew no way this is butter i was right it was made with margarine. These lady fingers were about the size of your middle finger to the first knuckle. So I complained about the taste and size and th customer service said the ingredients are on the page that i read. I went back to the website the ingredients where on the bottom of the page last line. I only read ingredients if i was allergic to some the not looking for margarine at a place called BUTTER MAID BAKERY. They offered more od their food I declined and have not heard back from them their %100 guarantee ain't %100 percent. read more

I was told by many friends on social media that this was a very reputable company. I'm sorry to say I do not agree. On their website they claimed to be a very military friendly company. We are a military family and do not feel supported by this company. I ordered over $60 worth of product that came damaged from UPS. I was dealing with customer service and I thought everything was set up that they were going to send me new product. The next day I received a return label and I put all of the 3 damaged products in the damaged package. The next day I received a package from them with only one of the items ordered when they said they were going to send me all 3. I asked for the other ones to be expedited to be delivered before Christmas since that is what I ordered them for and they refused. I asked for a full refund and they refused that as well. They do not package their product very well and it can easily be damaged and when you try to get them to resolve the issues they refuse. I will no longer do business with this company and I suggest buyer beware before doing business with this company. I have ordered similar products from other companies who package their bakery products in a much better fashion. Be careful. read more

Everything is delicious, but my favorite is the nut kolachi. It is just like Mom made except she used white raisins. A taste of home!!!!

The least they could do at the store is tell you the kolaci is frozen, and you will not be able to serve it for hours, if not overnight. This is a fact they do not share with walk-in customers who do not need it shipped. It is expensive, and local buyers are not expecting too much when they want fresh baked goods for $17 a roll. Will not be back, will patronize another Boardman Bakery that sells fresh goods. read more

This place is way overrated. Their kolachi is made and frozen, the crust is mushy. The chocolate chip cookies have so much chocolate in them they fall apart and are very messy. Last straw was when I bought a glazed donut and got home and decided to have it with some coffee, there was a hair wrapped in the glaze. Everything is too sweet! Will not go back! read more

I ordered kolachi on 4-12. It said "guaranteed fresh delivery by Easter". I figured since the store is in Ohio and I'm in Michigan it should be fine, but no. After me order was shipped it traveled to Pittsburgh where it had a 2 day vacation. Then, it's journey continued with another overnight stay in DES MOINES, IOWA. Long story short, it showed up the day after Easter in a damaged box with a sad looking vacuum packed kolachi that had been traveling for 10 days....Ohio to Michigan 10 days?? The people I spoke with seemed extremely unconcerned and snarky which did not help my attitude toward the situation. They informed me that this is normal shipping practice. They know that the post office is taking 10 days to deliver FOOD to a connecting state and it's ok with that. NEVER again! read more

Coming from a 100% Czech family, I know kolachi pretty well! My grandma Matejka and aunt Bette made the nut and poppyseed kind. When I saw the Buttermaid add, I had to try them. We had the walnut for Christmas and it was very good. The dough was not as flaky as what I grew up with, but it was good. I'll be ordering more when the poppyseed and chocolate walnut are gone.
