    Gorgeous wildflowers throughout.

Apparently Buttercup Preserve was donated to the city as recently as the 1970's once a plan for an apartment complex on the land never came to fruition. All I can say to that is thank goodness this beautiful valley wasn't paved over for apartments and was preserved as a gorgeous retreat in Northside. Parker's Woods was sold to the city much earlier, and connects to Buttercup Valley. The trails weaving through the two preserves essentially link them as one, to such an extent that I couldn't tell you where the boundaries are. This is definitely not a hugely busy park. There is no parking lot, and entrances are nestled within neighborhood streets, but that all just adds to the charm of the preserve. We met a handful of people walking their dogs in the park, but a lot of the paths were much more overgrown than you would see at a more traversed park like Mount Airy or Ault. You're never far from a neighborhood or thoroughfare like Spring Grove, but the valley itself is so peaceful it's easy to forget. We were hiking in the nature trails for nearly 2 hours and still didn't explore all of them. Being a valley, there are definitely some steep inclines, stairs and rugged trails, but it also offers one path which looks to be an old road that's nice and flat for an easier stroll. There's a cool meadow at one edge of the park where we encountered (and kind of terrified I think) a turtle, and we heard tons of birds while hiking. There is a small playground and picnic area at the edge of the woods, but not much else in the way of additional park amenities. Overall, LOVE the amazing peacefulness of this urban retreat, and I'll definitely be making a return trip!
