Meghan's academy is actually a little over a year old and I couldn't find her yet on yelp, so I am putting my review here and hope that's ok. I am an oil painter, and came to The Art Academy in Chester through a referral to Chester school. I have a strong set of skills in oil painting, and have begun to sell my work. I came to Meghan because I wanted to strengthen my foundational skills in the realistic painting style. Meghan is absolutely the strongest and best teacher I have ever had. She has classes for children, adolescents and adults, at all levels. She is so talented in teaching the fundamentals of painting and it has most definitely strengthened my skills, just as I had wanted. She is a master at working with children and adolescents meeting the individual student at their current level, providing a strong education and support in a manner where I've seen children and adolescents blossom into really excellent oil painters. She focuses on teaching values, and color, which are two very important keystones in being able to paint well. She is an absolute gem. As an adult painter, I find her lessons to be critically important and I have seen a great change for the better in my work. If you are looking for an art school that is both wonderfully supportive and highly educational, this is THE place.

Nina is an talented approachable instructor who is very patient and insightful. Her studio/workspace allows for a good number of visitors to create without feeling bunched together. She has a variety of other classes which all look very exciting and the room is surrounded by eye catching pieces of work. My friend and I recently tried the newest workshop of candle-making and it was AWESOME! Nina and Rich showed us the step-by-step process and explained any questions we might have had. They had a lot of different scents to chose from and while we waited for our candle creations to complete we enjoyed conversing with them about many things. These two are a great team and if you are looking for a place to finally try out a new art, look no further!

Creativity is my middle name therefore I was excited about attended their Crafting Community African Pottery workshop with Yinka. Yinka was very friendly and passionate about pottery. I loved the goal of the workshop which was to participate in building "community pots" which different women over the course of 12 weeks contributed to crafting. After the pots are done. Yinka will donate them to the African American Muesem as an exhibit which promotes Sisterhood and bonding. The display will have the names of each women who contributed their unique energy to a pot. After the workshop was over I felt very humble and knowledgeable about the strength of my ancestors. In Africa the pots are the women's livelihood and they use them to fetch water due to the lack of resources. Some women even carry their baby on their back while building the pot. Overall I'm glad to have learned a new skill of pottery and to also be apart of a good cause.

Founded in 1805 the academy is the first school and museum of fine arts in the United States. The historic landmark building is closed for renovations with three stories of exhibits now housed in their Hamilton Building (which is NOT named for Alexander!) Several things impacted me: the galleries are wide open, light and airy. A pleasure to walk through. A number of items from the Atwater Kent collection -- formerly the Philadelphia History Museum -- are on display. The diverse collection ranges from baseball, department stores (Wanamakers, anyone?), civil rights ... the list goes on. There is student and alumni art for sale and casts of Greek and Roman antiquity located in an active student workspace. As with most museums, exhibits change. The gift store with its friendly proprietor, is as good as any I've been to. A beautifully curated collection, and after Thanksgiving, I believe everything is discounted 30% for the holidays.

She really was a rude and nasty misandrist. The unspoken problem appeared to be our differences in politics even though we never discussed these. In fact I bent over backwards to avoid any contoversial subject. I was learning how to hand sew Revolutionary War reenacting garments and it is my opinion she resented this hobby. In addition, she would often make disparaging remarks to me in front of the class. I wrote a complaint letter to program director and never even received the courtesy of a response. Putting my interactions aside, the facility itself is completely run down. The bathrooms are disgusting, the hallways and offices have musty odors, there is no adequte air conditioning during the summer, the exterior grounds are a mess, and the building would likely fail a fire safety inspection. I have subsequently found several superior alternatives.

The adult band rehearsals are a stupid amount of fun! I started out as a guy who wanted to be a "rhythm guitar" player who just wanted to play power chords and not practice scales and now I'm enthusiastic about practicing scales so I can improve my soloing. All of the teachers are very supportive (even with my terrible singing). Even 15 months later, I look forward to guitar lessons. The school has great social distancing and other practices in place to keep everyone safe during these crazy times.
