Both Tim Caster and Allie Meyer are excellent. I have been to both for long hair cut and color. My husband and teenage kids (boy and girl) have also had cuts done by them. They both take time and do not rush through their work. The quality of the stylists is outstanding and the atmosphere is very positive and lively with good music. This is important if you require a 3 hour appointment as I do. Tim and Allie are both very receptive to ideas and positively encouraging change. When my daughter wanted a pixie cut and 2 stylists at our previous salon wouldn't do it and tried to talk her out of it, we decided to try Buzz. Tim was so excited to work through this style change with her and it made her very confident about this choice. I'm always a little surprised by her lack of chattiness but that's okay because she's very good at listening to what I want and always leaves me with a great cut. Unfortunately, I can't write this review without mentioning the front desk staff. There's a girl who staffs this desk and has been very rude on multiple occasions. When I checked in for my first appointment, she was working the front desk alone and was on her cell phone. I was visiting back home and in desperate need of a haircut (and my schedule wasn't matching up with my Chicago hairdresser's schedule, so I was forced to cheat on her). My haircut was with Latisha. I have crazy hair that is curly in some spots, wavy in others, just a mess. I went in there with it looking natural (in other words, with me looking like someone who doesn't own a hairbrush) and she took the time to discuss what I had in mind, and how my hair in its natural or straightened states would mesh with my idea. She also discussed with me my regular hair-regimen to offer advice, and she never was pushy or rude about it (something I have experienced at other salons). Shampoo, cut, and blowout, and it was reasonably priced for the amount of work she did to my long hair. I walked out of there with a fresh cut, whippin' my hair like Willow Smith. I have been to salons where the stylist didn't really get the idea of a blowout and I walked out looking worse than when I walked in: not in this case. I wanted to go out on the town and show off my new 'do! Located in the Iowa City ped mall, Buzz is very easy to get to. Overall, all staff in the salon was very friendly from the moment I walked in. I love buzz. I'm a dude with short hair. Brianna cuts my hair and she's terrific. She takes her time and does a great job and she's really nice. I like her so much, my wife now goes to her as well after being overcharged by a "senior" stylist for a trim. I've never had a problem with reception, in fact, an owner/manager has been there every time I've been, (which is every month for about a year,) and they certainly seem happy to see me each time. My haircuts cost about $24 before tip which I consider to be a bargain. I would pay $24 for just her scalp massage. To get the caliber of Bri's attention in other cities I've lived, I paid $40. I went to a barber in IC before who used the clippers on me, had me in and out of the chair in fifteen minutes and charged me $20 for what was essentially a Flobie cut. I can't speak for other patrons who've received colorings and other stuff they considered too expensive, but my wife seems totally satisfied by her experiences and she's had Bri do a bunch of stuff and always looks great. Value's an individual thing, but these folks seem to really know what they're doing, they're not snobby at all and they seem happy for my business. I really enjoy going to Buzz. read more

First of all: Buzz has AMAZING customer service! I went in for a color (blonde balayage) and honestly, wasn't super happy with the results. I was debating calling and seeing if I could get my hair done again when Buzz sent me an email requesting feedback. I wrote up a brief note about my experience and someone called me the very next morning and offered to have me come in to have my hair re-colored, free of charge. The lady (Chloe) was so understanding and kind on the phone, and didn't at all make me feel bad for wanting something different. So, I went in for another balayage with Katie, and I was a bit nervous. She was SO so nice and really took the time to discuss exactly what I wanted my hair to look like. That was a big comfort. Katie totally understood what I was talking about in terms of tone, color, etc.--it's like she was reading my mind! Again, she didn't make me feel even the tiniest bit bad for wanting my hair to look different. In fact, she insisted that I should be 1000% happy with my hair. I left with the beautiful buttery blonde highlights that I wanted all along, and I am so thrilled! I LOVE BUZZ! I've been going here for over two years now. I always book with Alicia (though I've have Bree and she is amazing too) and have never been disappointed. Is it pricey? Yeah. I'll start by saying I'm not from Iowa city and merely wanted to trim up my hair while visiting my husband's family. I chose buzz because of its location (hubby was getting his hair cut down the street), so I thought it would be convenient. Of course, I failed to ask how much a haircut was before booking the appointment... more about that later. When I showed up, I was greeted and offered coffee and the woman who showed me upstairs was very friendly. I was given a robe to go over my clothes and my head was massaged while my hair was washed (unnecessary and a little awkward). The hairstylist was friendly and gave me exactly what I needed (1 inch trim) and styled it well upon blow drying. ... much to my surprise, my 1 inch trim and blow dry was $100. What. What. What. I would have never in a million years gone to a place like this for a measly trim and paid that much money. I get that you pay for the ambience and what not but charging that much is pretty damn ridiculous. I could have gotten the same haircut somewhere else for about 70 bucks less. That being said, my review of the overall experience is okay because the haircut and style was what I wanted.. but unless you want to splurge or don't mind spending more than you need to on a trim, I'd pick another salon instead. She took the time to listen, to examine my hair and then made excellent decisions about what to do with my color, She also cut my hair so well and the blow dry was superb. So today was my first haircut in IC and someone recommended I go to Buzz because they're "Amazing!" I had Alicia and she did a really nice job with my hair. I have long hair that's thick and naturally wavy so it's a major pain to style. I asked for her to only take a little off the bottom, freshen up my layers and the framing around my face. She gave me exactly the cut I asked for. She also took the time and care to style it really nicely before sending me on my way. Note: people ARE NOT kidding when they say it's pricey. I'm relatively certain I paid $70 for a haircut. I didn't look up the prices beforehand so I was pretty surprised when they rang me up BUT I did get a really nice cut, so I'm not complaining too much. I moved to IC last summer and needed to find a new stylist. After reading other reviews and personal recommendations, I decided to try Buzz Salon. The atmosphere is hip and funky. The staff are fun and very professional. Convenient location. Not what you call inexpensive but they take their time to do a good job. But when it comes down to it, I was never totally satisfied with my hair. Generally speaking my stylist does great cuts. Where we parted ways was with the color. I wanted blonder than she did. She continually tried to convince me to go dark. And told me my hair "couldn't" get very blonde anyway. (I've always had blonde highlights with no trouble.) I think the problem is they seem to prefer balayage technique. The color solution dries out before it gets to the light tones. When I tried another salon that also does foil highlights I got the look I wanted. In summary: haircuts 4 stars, highlights 2 stars. read more

I had my hair cut, grays covered and balayage yesterday with Jodi. She is by far the best of the best. I just moved back to the area from Los Angeles and Jodi is far above any of the people I have been to in LA. I have also had my hair trimmed by George and he is great too! In comparison to other places in the country this is not true, the prices are very comparable to salons in larger cities. I live in Iowa City and was looking for a nice place to go to get some major color work done. Through my research online, this establishment seemed like the best place in IC to go to. I ended up just getting a haircut here (from a girl that doesn't work here anymore) and it was no good. Unevenly cut and did not look good. The worst part is that it was crazy expensive. Now I travel to Des Moines to get my hair done and it's a million times better AND like half the price. Not happy with Buzz at all. I just came back from being abroad in Korea and after over a year of experiencing hair heaven, I was actively searching for a salon that could take care of my color treated hair. I had done some research about Buzz beforehand and I heard nothing but good remarks. I scheduled my first appointment with Mandy who knew exactly what she was doing and she also had great hair! I had experiences where the stylist will rush to get things done but Mandy took her time to make sure that my hair had the best care. I bleached my hair a few times and my hair was in desparate need of hydration and nutrition. Mandy was nice enough to put a mask on my hair which made it feel so amazing! When Mandy was done, I was very satisfied. I asked for a nice trim and some face framing pieces and that is exactly what she gave me. I walked out of the salon feeling so light and beautiful! One thing about Buzz is that it is on the pricey side. I paid about $55 for my haircut. Buzz gives you the option to choose the level of stylist you want and with each level the prices vary so be aware of that! read more

Latisha gets my hair, and takes such care with getting the length of every hair for the bob just exactly right, and the bangs just short enough with just enough choppiness, and she always brushes it so I can notice the light catching the many colors of my long-ago dishwater blonde mixed with my grays - and Latisha understands that I am not trying to look younger, just really my 58 year old self. And I love the atmosphere in the salon - I enjoy the treehouse feel of the windows, and the welcoming greeting, and the attractiveness of the displays and waiting area downstairs, and the feeling of a lively buzz coming from the upstairs. Had a wonderful experience here. If you're looking for a chic barber experience (as I was), this is not your place. It is definitely a salon. That said, I'm happy with my haircut. Ambience is nice. Service was quick and polite. My only complaint: after leaving I saw they charged me a full eyebrow wax for just a unibrow touch up ($30!!). I've been to buzz twice with two different stylists and loved each result! George did balayage to my hair and I didn't even ask to trim my hair and he did it without charge. Sorayah cut and colored my hair this time and I loved how she really grasped onto what you wanted and made you feel so welcome. She cut my hair dry while standing up, a new technique for me, and I thought it was awesome. In addition, she gave me tips on how to style my hair and what products to use or not to use. It's a bit expensive but I'm really particular with my hair and don't get it done too often, so I felt it was worth it. Really cool atmosphere and I feel every stylist will do an amazing job! George is great, I've been to him twice now, and he gave me exactly the haircut I wanted. It's true that Buzz Salon is a little more pricy, but if you want a $15 haircut there are other places to get a $15 haircut. I used to live in Washington DC and get my hair cut at Wise Owl Club, which always had crazy long wait times. With Buzz Salon I was able to make an appointment two days out at a convenient time, and the quality is as good as any place I've ever been. read more

I LOVE BUZZ! I've been going there for around a year now and have had nothing but great experiences. All of the staff are really welcoming. Katie is my go-to gal and is as good as it gets. She takes into account your lifestyle, what would look best on you, what YOU want, etc. I'm as low maintenance as it gets and she cuts my hair in a way where it'll look great air dried (I chopped off over a foot). She recommends products that would really work great for me (and dismisses others, don't feel like she is trying to make commission). Also does an AMAZING balayage that grows out naturally (AKA 8 months of no upkeep because I'm frugal and still looked great). You are paying for what you get! 100% recommend Buzz. read more

Don't even think about this place!! Especially for a wedding spa day! First this pl is not a spa at all! No relaxing here. What was supposed to b my daughter's happiest day ended up to b a nightmare!! We had made plans at this place 2 months b4 the wedding,sent emails after emails of our hair n makeup ideas at their request. We get their at 9 n find out they supposedly dont do makeup even tho they said they did from the beginning. Come to find out the makeup artist they have was out cause her sister was getting married. They didn't tell us that at all till we show up! They bring a lady in who bought her makeup n eyelashes at CVS!! N she did a horrible job. We looked like $2 hookers. We even had to use our own makeup from their request. My friend from fla did some of the bridesmaids makeup n did a much better job. They had 1 lady doing 6 updos n made us late to our pictures n behind schedule!! Even after all this they had the nerve to charge $100 for just a updo n another $65 for CVS makeup! The owner left n didn't show up till everyone was leaving. So unprofessional in every sense No offering of mimosas or buying coffee n food to make up for their mistake. Horrible. Had an entire wedding party show up and there was No makeup artist and one person to do 7 girls hair. How does a salon do that. They were not prepared and had to call someone in for the makeup. Thankfully I was a friend of the wedding who was getting my hair done there and I know how to do makeup and did half of the girls to help take care of the problem. To have 1 person to do 7 girls hair is absolutely ridiculous and the person who did our hair wasn't even supposed to be there that day. They had to call her in because the people they had scheduled had another personal wedding of their own so they weren't even scheduled to work that day. NEVER BOOK AN APPT HERE!!! To make everything WORSE! I got a partial updo with a short braid and some curls. I get to the cashier and the price was $100 for this updo. Never have I ever paid that much for an updo especially something that's not consider an updo. I live in south Florida where prices are higher. This was completely absurd!! I didn't have time to disagree with cashier because we were running behind for the wedding due to the one person doing hair. Side note the makeup person they brought in didn't even have eyelashes so she ran over to CVS and bought cheap eyelashes and charged the girls $45 to put lashes on. Absolutely crazy!! NEVER GO HERE!! I had my hair cut by Laurie. It had been 3 months since my last haircut by Laurie. She gave me one of the best haircuts I have ever had. I did not specify what kind of cut I preferred. She went to work and viola, it was done better than I could have asked for. I have received many compliments from fellow workers and my wife is really pleased.
