Here's the thing, I had spent the last 5 years doing absolutely nothing to my hair color-wise. Prior to that, I had been a summer blonde, an Ariel red, a raven black, a pumpkin orange...(that's a story for another time). Anyway, the point is I colored my hair. A lot. So, I decided to go au natural and I loved it. I truly appreciate my dark-with-a-hint-of-auburn hair. However, the last 6 months had me feeling those familiar stirrings. I was ready for a change, but only on my terms. I wanted something very subtle, not at all blonde (although I am obsessed with you gorgeous unicorns), and easy to grow out. My stylist, McKenna, understood exactly what I meant, and the plus about having all natural hair was that she didn't have to use bleach to lift the color! The change is just what I was hoping for. I still feel like a brunette, just a little more sunny in honor of springtime :) I would also like to give a big shout out and thank you to another one of HABA's great stylists, Katelyn. She helped me make another leap...BANGS. She originally left them a little longer to ease my anxiety. After almost two weeks, I was ready to go shorter and she fit me in last minute and trimmed them up to true bangs. I have been loving the way they fall! I can wear them swept to the side, straight down tickling my brows, and I can even blow dry them all the way to the side (to where they almost blend completely in with the rest of my hair) on those days where I want to be bangless. You'll definitely get a great cut and blow dry/straighten from this place, but make sure you save up some cash because you'll get charged an arm and a leg for a trim. I don't recommend coming frequently because I don't want to pay over $100 for a maintenance cut. read more

This is a great place to get your hair done. I've had my eyebrows done here as well. It's on the pricey side but most salons are because you're getting a professional cut, color, and style. I had my hair trimmed and colored deep red and it turned out great, unfortunately my hair doesn't hold color long so after 3 weeks it was already faded and I cant afford to recolor every 3 weeks. But overall I was a happy customer. Also a tip of advice they only accept cash tips no tips on the credit card so make sure you bring some cash with you. read more

Picky about how my hair is cut and what products are used, I made an appointment with HABA hoping to find my new forever-salon. HABA uses R + Co products, which I love because they're animal cruelty-free and don't use paragons, sulfites, or petroleum. They have a modern trendy space, and all the stylists / salon staff I met were rocking their own styles and really down to earth - which can be a hard balance to find. My appointment was with Nicole, who rocked my hair. My previous stylists at a different salon really botched my hair to a point where I was stuck hiding my hair with updos and pinned-back bangs until things grew out a bit. When Nicole immediately noted the trouble areas without me having to point them out, I knew I was in good hands. She balanced my ends and gave me a plan of action for getting my hair back on track. I've been to my fair share of swanky hair salons; I'm not into the weekly manicure or multi-hundred dollar purses, but I do like to splurge on my hair. And yet, HABA Salon set a new standard in my book with their mini bar offerings! Of course I've always been offered water or coffee, but HABA Salon goes above and beyond by offering locally-roasted coffee (by Wake Up Iowa), an arsenal of teas like honey lavender and cinnamon vanilla, plus... wine and beer. I scheduled with a stylist I used at another salon. I scheduled an appointment to have my dreadlocks maintained. She had done this before. After the service, I was charged 3 times what I had been charged!!!!! The receptionist asked the stylist several times if she was sure about the charge and she insisted it was correct. The stylist obviously set the price. She never told me she would be charging a lot more at the new salon. I paid the bill and didn't tip her. I will never go back for any reason to see any stylist. Make sure you get your prices in writing before going to this salon. I wish I had walked out and not paid her. read more

Finding a new hair salon in a new town is such an important thing, and I got lucky with HABA here. I just moved to Iowa City and decided to see Ally for my haircut. She did a great job giving me a trim and bangs. While Ally is on leave I've seen the owner Leah for bang trims and I was also very happy about it. This is a cute salon: the vibe is very relaxed but also Insta-friendly. I appreciate that the price is transparent since you can see each stylist's pricing on the website and the online booking system is also very convenient. read more

Haircut was outrageously pricey and it was not at all what I wanted. Might have been one of the worst hair cuts I have ever gotten.

I went to this place after I saw so many good reviews. I am so disappointed. It was terrible. They made me wait for 3 weeks for a simple haircut and they cut my hair dry. Never seen a dry haircut and it ended up with unequal cuts, very short top layers and longer layers below. I miss my old hair :( They did not even take the time to properly style my hair. It felt like I did cut my hair by myself at home and simply dried it. The price is also very high for such an awful work. Terrible experience. Not recommended. read more

I came in wanting to do an EXTREME change. Hair down to my waist was going to get realllllly short. Immediately they offered us wine, big plus! Leah was excellent. She sectioned off my hair (to donate) and didn't even ask if I was ready before she cut it all off! This was a good thing, because had I thought too much longer about it, I might have backed out. She took her time with it, and cut it in phases, giving me time to check it out and see how I liked it. I felt totally at ease asking her to chop off here and there until I was ecstatic about it. Quite literally, people stop me in public to ask about my hair. That has never happened before in my life. I now recommend HABA to everyone, and will be going back again and again. Trying HABA for the first time was definitely a good choice of mine. I was pampered and glam'd up in no time. The ambiance is relaxing, the music is fun, and the place is clean and bright. I got my eyebrows cleaned up and I drastically went from long, long hair to a little below the shoulders cut. My stylist (nicole) did a great job, asked me some questions and then knew exactly what I wanted. At the end she even gave me some hair curling tips. I have gone to Buzz salon for the past five years and always been very happy there, had a great hair stylist who I was happy seeing every time I went in. My main concern with Buzz is that it can be extremely pricey so when I saw the opening of Haba and the positive reviews I thought I would try it despite my loyalty with Buzz salon. The salon is much less sophisticated and physically appealing than Buzz and I wasn't impressed by my hair stylist upon first meeting her either (and actually remained unimpressed as she spent the entire cut gossiping with another stylist about other people, barely acknowledging my existence). I was actually quite skeptical and started to regret my decision. However, after I had finished and walked out of the salon to really take a good look at my new hair style I LOVED it. It is one of the best haircuts I have ever gotten. I was so shocked as I had decided mid-cut that I was going to regret it and hate everything about it. So the price was right, the cut was quick, and it was EXACTLY what I wanted. I was really, really happy with the cut. read more

My experiences at HABA were both wonderful! Joann created a lovely side-do for my wedding and cut my hair a few weeks later. For the side-do, Joann elicited my feedback during the trial session and delivered a perfect final product on the day of my wedding. When I came back for a hair cut, she again communicated really well and delivered an adorable hair cut that I was really happy with. I would highly recommend asking for Joann at HABA if you need a cut or an up-do! All of the folks at HABA are warm and welcoming, offering water or tea when you arrive for your appointment. The open layout of the place lends itself well to random fun and entertaining conversations. The only thing I regret is not finding out about HABA until now!! read more

Wow, had a great cut from Nicole today. First time at this Salon and I'm going to be driving up to Iowa City from Fairfield from now on to come here. In particular I liked that Nicole and the other staff where really understanding of me bringing my two daughters 7 years old and 3 years old, something I could see being a huge issue at a more snotty salon. Lastly I was a challenging customer because I joined the no-poo movement 2 months ago and haven't used anything but hot water on my hair since. Let's just say my hair hasn't found its natural oil balance yet. While I remain defiantly optimistic that it will, I was very grateful to find a hair salon so accepting and without any judgement about my choice. read more

Have been here on 2 separate occasions for a blowout and for highlights. Blowout lasted 20 minutes amd was flat before my event and highlights were the worst I've ever gotten. Color was awful and metallic, and highlights wasn't properly dispersed at all. Would not recommend these 2 style options from here ever. read more

I am a student and needed a trim while away from my salon at home. I was very pleased with the service. My stylist was very nice, but when I was finalizing the payment they said my trim (without styling) was $55. I have been to many different upscale salons and was never charged over $40 for a trim. Leah is a true professional and so gifted at what she does! I feel lucky she's my go-to gal--and has been for nearly 18 years! She listens to me and asks what my routine is like... as a working mom I can't do a high-maintenance 'do... and if I suggest something that won't work well with my lifestyle, Leah sets me back on course. I can't say enough good things about her and all the staff at Haba. Including McKenna who did a phenomenal job on my color earlier this month. I recently made the switch to HABA Salon following my hairdresser JoAnn, and she worked her magic yet again. My thick and curly hair will glow in good hair days for weeks to come. I was blown away by all the local talent HABA has to offer. All the staff were knowledgeable, positive, friendly, and personable. From my chair I was happy to see not only my wonderful new do, but also the fantastic styles that the other hairdressers created for their clients. I felt comfortable in the bright and stylish atmosphere, and was pleased to see local artist's work on the walls. The salon has excellent products in store that left my hair feeling wonderful... Olaplex works wonders! HABA gets my vote for the best looking staff in town, as well as best looking clients in town! read more

I had no idea what to do with my hair (it had been a while since I had a professional hair cut), so I told the stylist kind of what I was looking for and that it needed to be low maintenance. Okay, I normally don't like posting negative stuff, but this haircut from owner/manager LEAH is the worst cut I have had in many years. So unbalanced, crappy scissoring/sculpting, ( gag, it is awful!). I am being patient in waiting for a grow-out to get fixed elsewhere. There is nothing I can do with this oddly-shaped, just crappo, no-attention-paid-cut job from the top-priced stylist @ this hair studio. Less than zero stars. read more
