Master Lewis is a great instructor and is very practical when it comes to self defense. Rather than several Mcdojos in the area, he's a hands on instructor and still actively competes. He's has great credentials in the martial arts community and his students go on to win national competitions. I had some prior martial arts experience beforehand and I still learned a lot from him and his senior students. I highly recommend for anyone that's looking for a martial arts school for themselves or their children.

He creates an environment built on trust, respect, and high expectations. He is firm with his students, but that's part of what makes his instruction so impactful. Life isn't all sugar cookies and rainbows, and he understands that he's not just teaching kicks and forms--he's helping shape character, resilience, discipline, and confidence. I've watched my daughter grow in focus, accountability, perseverance, and self-belief. She walks a little taller now, carries herself with more confidence, and takes pride in her progress. My daughter has been a dedicated student at Virginia Tae Kwon Do for several years. During this…read moretime, we have invested not only our time and money--$110 per month plus testing fees and gear--but also our trust in the leadership of this school. She progressed from white belt to black belt through hard work and discipline. Unfortunately, that same level of discipline and professionalism has not been modeled by the school's leadership. The head instructor, Mr. Baker, regularly brings his personal political views into the classroom environment. He has shared disturbing anecdotes about immigrants and political talking points that are completely inappropriate for a space where he holds authority over young students. This is especially harmful in a diverse class that includes Black and Brown children, some of whom may be personally affected by the issues he references. I respectfully asked Mr. Baker to keep politics out of the classroom and to be mindful of the impact his words could have on children. He agreed, and he said that he wouldn't bring it up again. However, we soon found out that he was continuing to discuss his views. We tried to address it again. Rather than engaging in a thoughtful dialogue or committing to maintaining a neutral, inclusive environment, he told me that our daughter's membership was canceled within minutes of our follow-up conversation. No regard for her years of dedication or accomplishments. Just immediate dismissal. It is deeply disappointing that a student who put in the work to reach black belt status is now forced to find another school--not because of poor behavior or lack of commitment, but because the instructor prioritized pushing his personal agenda over providing a respectful, inclusive environment for all students. I sincerely hope Virginia Tae Kwon Do reconsiders how it handles both parent concerns and the power dynamic that exists between instructors and children. Martial arts should teach integrity, respect, and self-control--not fear, division, or ideology.

My family has been a part of the Goldsboro King Tiger Family for four years. We have watched our…read moreson go from a little five year old who struggled with confidence and coordination, not only gain those but strength and a great character as well. Just the other day, he held the door for perfect strangers thanks to his training in courtesy. Now, not only is he a Black Belt, but he has the confidence and athleticism to go out in the community and try other sports and activities. As for me, it was a place for me to make a goal and achieve it to get my Black Belt and to compete. I have discovered that I have more strength and athletism than I ever even knew I possessed. King Tiger is a place to reach your goals and surpass your full potential. Now, the time has come for our family to leave Goldsboro, and it breaks my heart that it is all coming to an end. No matter where we go or what we do, King Tiger Goldsboro will always be a part of us.

From the owner: Zan’s Taekwondo offers several different programs for adults and children ages 6 and up…read more Taekwondo Family Class- Tuesdays & Thursdays from 5:30 – 6:45 PM. Classes include kicking, punching, forms, strategic sparring, and discipline. Kick Fit Class –Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings from 7:45 – 8:30 AM. This class is a full-body circuit workout that focuses on balance, flexibility, strength, and conditioning while incorporating some beginner martial arts skills. Afterschool Martial Arts Program - This program is from 3:15 – 5:15 pm, Monday – Friday. Kids will learn focus, confidence, and social skills while having fun learning martial arts. Free school bus transportation is available for students of Arapahoe Charter School and Pamlico Christian Academy, but all 1st - 8th grade students are welcome. Ladies’ Self-Defense – This is a 6-week course that teaches women 12 years old and older how to defend against several different types of street attacks. Students will learn how to prevent and deter attacks before they happen, as well as techniques to neutralize their opponent in the event of an attack. Pre-registration is required.
