This is not a…read morechurned out Mc Dojo looking to charge you for belts, clothing, monthly tests etc. This is a family style school where everyone is friendly and helpful and there are no uniforms or belts. Either you know what you have been learning and practicing, or you don't. A colored belt doesn't change who you are and what you are capable of. Regular classes are an hour long and will have healthy food served afterwards. You are not kicked out of the school when you finish your class, instead you are encouraged to stay and practice and workout with your fellow kung fu brothers and sisters. It is a large school with two main practice rooms, a bag room, and a gym room. There is also a kitchen with a dining area and two private rooms that can be used for meditation or massage therapy. Sifu Smith teaches a few styles of Tai Chi, Bagua, Hop Gar (Tibetan Kung Fu), Choi Li Fut, and a few other select more private styles. Its rare that you find a teacher that has a great lineage, and its also rare to find a teacher who is exceptional at teaching. When you find a teacher that has a great lineage and is a great teacher, consider yourself fortunate to learn there. We have students there who have come from various martial backgrounds from people who have run their own schools, to people who have never stepped in a gym. There is no judgement, only encouragement. I talked with Sifu (teacher, instructor) before and after class and I knew I have signed up and see how far I can go with a bad knee. I learn to modify some exercises and try my best at some others. Well, I joined end of February of this year and I still a member. I am loving it because whatever I learn, I can practice at home. Repetition is key to getting you better. Everyone there is friendly and helpful. It awed me to watch the advanced students and sifu practice forms and weapons before class. Sifu is stern but very approachable. Coach Erik is fantastic, knowing just how much to push the class and individual. He's encouraging and patient. But he doesn't let you slack off. Dr. Gunther was also helpful in getting a diet plan for me. Since I completed the 6-week challenge, I'm now doing the Cardio Kickboxing class. If the last time you did a sit-up was when your evil coach in HS who mocked you in front of the football team told you to do one, then the 6 week challenge is a perfect intro into the more advanced classes. Coach Erik doesn't play around in the CKB classes! Also looking forward to doing Krav Lvl 1 classes as well. Finally maybe it was just a fluke, or maybe Molotov hires really good coaches, but the 6 week challenge class really gelled together and several of us are friends now on Facebook. Per NC law, you are allowed to back out of this kind of agreement within 3 days of the initial sign up. I tried to back out and was stonewalled on the phone and subsequently treated with hostility by Molotov's wife, Greer when I went into the club in person. They refused to refund me and I ended up just cutting my losses rather than fight them on it. I have no doubt they are excellent Krav Maga instructors but if you prefer to spend your limited time on this earth meeting good people rather than snakes and bullies, you should consider a different club.
