Atmosphere: sexy, tulum vibes, boho chic, romantic Beverage: the cocktail we order was one of the tastiest and most unique drinks we have ever had. Instead of ice cubes they freeze avocado seeds which add a sweetness to the drinks we have never experienced. Food: Green salad with goat cheese, candied pepitas and Serrano croutons: dressing was phenomenal. Tuna tartar: Asian inspired with soy style sauce and topped with avocado mash. Oaxaca cheese: squeaky cheese wrapped and roasted in a banana leaf, sitting atop the most delicious roasted pepper sauce. The cheese was slightly gooey with its characteristic cheese curd texture. Octopus: absolutely melt in your mouth, however wished the exterior was a little most crisp. Overall basico is a wonderful spot for good food and creative drinks and sexy vibes. Basico is... Basico! And that's OK! 3 stars on yelp is OK!! This place wins for it's ambiance and it's well-intentioned, extremely kind staff. Reservations are recommended, and I recommend sitting at a proper table (the tables in the front stare into a muddy street with no ambiance). The ambiance is INSIDE this establishment. This place fails at: being in stock of every wine I tried to order on the menu. Also fails at having a server that is knowledgable about their menu (and wine list) - this does not mean it will happen to you, this was only my experience. Very small portion sizes. Expensive (I lived in NYC for 4 years, I do not use this word lightly). This bill for 2 people with just a few drinks was $140 before tax and gratuity. I was hungry after and ate a Kind bar (raspberry flavored. I'm all about that OG flavor). Every meal hereafter at OHTER restaurants (with MORE food and MORE drinks and at BETTER places was generally 1/3 to 1/4 that amount). Really hip, fun, spot with a great vibe for any time of the day - breakfast, lunch, dinner, or drinks. Probably the swankiest place in town. They have great drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Absolutely beautiful restaurant with very tulum vibes. It is tapas style and has some mains. We got the cochinita taco as an appetizer and it only came with one but I can hands down say it is the BEST taco I've ever had in my life. The ceviche was to die for, so tangy and well presented. The fish and chips we're average at best but the spicy sauce it came with was crazy good. We have the rib eye and salmon as mains and the rib eye was a pretty average cut, but the salmon was incredible. The cocktails were unreal and we could see the bartender making them very elaborately and putting on a show. The servers were all very kind and gave us tips of where to go out after. read more

I am shocked to see less than 5 star reviews of Basico. I visited Holbox with my girlfriend from LA, and this was one of the best dining experiences we've ever had. We pretty much ordered one of everything on the menu, and a couple drinks each and everything was more than enough for us to leave happy and full. Every dish was a hit! The octopus, the shrimp, the chocolate dessert... so good. And after all that, the bill was less than 150USD, and we tipped in cash. Cool chic trendy restaurant in Holbox. Situated in downtown Holbox it's easy to find, just a short walk from the beach. Service and host were always nice and attentive. We came to eat here more than once during our stay in the island and Belen took very good care of us. Not being a fan of sea food I was concerned the menu would consist mostly of sea food options. I was wrong, their menu has many options that are not sea food, and everything tasted delicious. I tried their chilaquiles, strawberry salad, taco de res(marinated shredded beef), and egg white toast. My friend had their ceviche and everything g tasted delicious. They have fresh squeezed juices and coffee as well, we had their orange juice and it was delicious. Definitely recommend this place for a good bite in the island. Gracias Basico! read more

Our waiter tried to force us to take it but and stormed off and glared at us and refused to take it off our bill The service is extremely slow and wait staff is rude. Wow oh wow!! The hostess, who turned out to be the manager, must be related to the owner, otherwise I don't know why anyone would keep her employed there. Showed up at 8:15 with my husband and two kids. We're told our reservation made by the hotel can't be found and she can't honor our reservation because it's just too busy. We were like we just saw many many open spots on open table around 7pm.. how can you be so full already when the restaurant is still basically empty?! Ok, so you don't see the reservation that our hotel made and you can't accommodate. Ok, weird, we walk out. I get the holbox free internet trial for 15 min (no cell service anywhere basically). I go to open table and book a table for 4 people for 8:30. Walk back in, host/manager, visibly unhappy; says she may try to accommodate us. Husband asks if we can by the bar, she says it's very busy so likely not. He walks a bit more in and says "there is no one at your bar!?" We go in, sit at bar. 12 min later, bartender hasn't asked us if we want anything. Husband asks what's up man, why haven't you..., bartender stares at him and walks away. (!?) WTF. We realize we are not welcome here. Later, hotel confirms they definitely made reservation. This was one of the weirdest restaurant experiences we have ever had. I think it's because we had kids with us. But I don't know what else could have caused this. read more

We loved it. Excellent service. The steak tacos and pork tacos were amazing, as were the other small plates we tried. We only had a few dishes and a glass of wine but plan to return the next time in Holbox to sample more items on the menu. Beautiful space, nice design and vibe. Horrible service! Inattentive and rude. Cant tell you how the food was becasue it never came! I rather have ate ANYWHERE else. Waited for an hour for a drink! When drinks arrived the wine had warmed. I saw them sitting on the bar for a while. Never saw waiter for 2.5 hours. ( when we ordered and when we for the bill) We got out of our seats numerous times and We tried to cancel food, but they wouldn't allow us. He ended they cancelling half of our dinner but never told us and we sat around waiting for the rest of the meal that never arrived. Its too bad because it does have great atmosphere. Expensive and small portions. Initially drawn to the vegetarian options on the menu. Good food but service so bad it ruined our meal. Not welcoming from the moment you try to get a seat - you flag someone down inside and greet them, not the other way around. I got an eye roll from our server for asking for the wifi password. Then there was a misunderstanding on my end regarding what was in what i ordered. When i mentioned it to the server, he rolled his eyes at me and just swapped my plate with my husbands so I could eat what he ordered and vice a versa. I apologized, took responsiblity and said my husband would eat both plates, asked for the menu to order something else and received yet another eye roll!! Anyhow the drinks are great, food very small but good. The ambiance is set to make you forget your on a tiny island in Mexico- hip but sterile. PS they allow smoking. read more

Very nice new fusion type of food. Lobster tacos, nice pastas, good wine... We also tried the asparagus soup as well as the veggie lasagna (it's only vegetable,not actual lasagnas). Waiters were fast and very nice, always checking if anything was needed and not pushy at all. If you are tired of basic Mexican food, try Basico ! It's the only place where we didn't get nachos served and it felt good for once ! Prices are very reasonable too. I don't give 5 stars because all our dishes came together, starters and main course, so don't forget to specify if you want your food in a specific order... read more

Our hotel doesn't have a restaurant at the moment and gave us vouchers for our breakfast there. This place is a mess! They had 5 people doing the service, maybe 20-25 costumers, but nobody seems to know what they are doing and they couldn't care less... first nobody greeted us when we walked in (after 2 minutes of waiting awkwardly in the way of everyone, I had to ask a waiter passing next to us and ostensibly ignoring us) then it took them 20 Minutes to bring us a cold coffee... Situation improved when the hotel sent someone from their staff (a brave woman) who took everyone's complaints, made sure our orders were taken and was following up with the restaurant. Before her arrival, they were simply not stressed and didn't seem to care at all. I think they thought they could make a good deal with the hotel and get lots of money, but are simply not not good enough for that business. I think it's a simple conclusion When you have 5 employees and you can't handle 30 costumers... (don't tell me you need 20 Minutes to poor coffee in a cup) There are plenty of other places in Holbox, don't be fooled by the nice decor and go elsewhere read more
