I've been listening to C-89 Dance Radio since the early 80's. I still love their upbeat music. They also have a K-pop night too now since BTS is so popular. People can tune in via Internet Radio and hear the station globally. Nathan Hale HS That runs this program has graduated many great DJs. This is my main radio station when I drive. I like their EDM segment as well. On Sunday evening, they play Mexican and Latino music. So Tune in to enjoy their music! read more

One of my favorite radio stations in Seattle. The dance music radio format is interesting. It is kind of the station to tune into before songs become mainstream hits. For instance, Lady Gaga was played on C89.5 before she hit it big. There is an interesting mix of songs here. While you might hear a song daily, it does not become repetitive like KISS and the Top 40 format. Other things going for C89.5 are that it is a listener supported station, there are hardly any commercials and the music playlist is diverse. There are several programs that run during the evenings focused on certain genres like the Wednesday night trance show. Interestingly there is gospel music on Sunday mornings which kind of does not mix, but I get it is a community station that is student run. And sometimes that word "student" comes to mind. Specifically when the occasional news report segment comes up. It comes off as amateurish when the reporters stumble with their words while Seattle listens. But cut the person reporting some slack because it is for classroom learning. Being a student run station, C89.5 is impressive with its great music selection and for the most part competes well with the other stations on the dial trying to gain my attention. read more

C89.5 is my favorite radio station. I listen to it anytime I'm in the car and it's the default station for anytime of day. I love EDM, techno, rave, house and the 80's which are played on Thursday mornings. The high school students that run the station are learning their craft and sometimes there's a hiccup in timing, speech or sound but this is part of their education. The morning show is terrible and the goofy hashtag contests they have could go away, but I don't listen to the station for those things. I come for the music. Sunday nights is the show where a lot of "out there" music is played and bands that are incredibly famous around the world except the US are played like VNV Nation and Covenant. We need more VNV played the rest of the week. Don't think something's wrong with your radio or computer when you hear southern gospel choirs blasting on Sunday mornings. They play gospel a couple hours then. The rest of the time it's all dance music. My soul would not be nearly as gothic as it is now if it weren't for C-89. See, I had moved to Port Orchard, WA from Long Beach, CA in 1994 or so. In Cali I had been a huge NIN fan and was flirting with other music in the genre such as Ministry, Nitzer Ebb, and a few other bands. After moving to Port Orchard I quickly found out that Kitsap County is not the most happening place out there. Luckily, I discovered C-89, a top-40 dance station that operates out of Nathan Hale High School in Seattle. During the week C-89 plays strictly cheesy gay techno from the mid-1990s, but on Sunday nights DJ Paul Alleinkoff mixes it up with his "On The Edge" program, playing the newest gothic/industrial from 6 pm to midnight. I used to record nearly the entire program on cassette tape, and then I would spend hours re-editing songs onto new tapes. Eventually, I discovered that my favorite song was a little number called "Soylent Green" by the then-unknown :Wumpscut: At the time Rudy R.'s albums were nearly impossible to find in the U.S., but I persevered and got the entire back catalog fairly quickly. And the rest is history. I don't understand how a station run by the Seattle Public School system can have a strong enough signal to reach Port Orchard. They even have their own website! When I briefly attended ASU the running joke was that you had to walk around campus with a boombox to hear the campus station. Its signal limit was something like 200 feet (no joke). Its very cool that Nathan Hale has its own station and that the students get to participate in the programming and in the day-to-day operations of the station. I don't listen to "On The Edge" as often as I should, but I think it's awesome that Paul Alleinkoff is still going strong after all these years. read more

This is pretty much THE radio station that I listen to. No commercials and fun music makes this gal happy. I even got my mom to program 89.5 into her favorites (on her own) because she liked that there were no commercials or obnoxious morning DJs. Thank you thank you thank you for that! I also try to make sure and donate at least once per pledge drive because I think it's a great thing for high school students to do. My only plead would be to for them to play more variety. Yes, I know the song is really popular and some person keeps calling over and OVER to request it, but that doesn't mean you need to play it again when you played it not even four songs ago! There is so much great dance music out there, why not mix more of it in? We wouldn't have to hear a repeat for a week! I would love that. :) read more

I love this station. I support it with my ears and my wallet every year. I have no shame in loving this station, run primarily by the students of Nathan Hale High School. It is the longest running dance music station in the country. 35 years!It it one of only 8 in the nation that influence the Billboard Dance Chart. They run regular 'shows' highlighting "oldies" from the 80's, industrial electronica, lunchtime workout, and still play gospel music on Sunday mornings. They have a great website with active forums, schedule, live stream, music requests and a ton of info about this top notch education program. I love it. read more

Wow. This station eclipses even my considerable awesomeness... ness. (Is that a word?) If you like techno this is the place to go. I listened a whole lot online (c895worldwide.com) even when I lived on the East side, but now that I've moved back to TX, I listen to the stream a lot. In fact, I'm listening to it right now on my project in Phoenix. It's also my music selection on myspace. They are quite repetitive, but on the other hand, you will also hear tons of music that you won't hear on any commercial radio station, like unreleased tracks and music that didn't come out 5 minutes ago. (RANT: just because a song came out a year ago regular radio stations can't possibly play it?!? Yeah, there's no payoffs going on in the radio biz.). I would never have been introduced to some of my now favorite tracks, like the phenomenal Trick Me by Kelis if it weren't for C89. And the shows are great! I really love the remix and live DJ shows on the weekends. Someday, maybe, the digital music revolution will make the rest of the world half this cool. Finally, I would bear Chloe's children. I realize the difficulties involved, but I'm willing to try. (Oh and I forgot to mention that thanks to the magic of 3G Internet, I can now stream this on my phone and listen in my car 2500 miles away from Seattle. Joy!) read more

You are driving your very olde Volvo Station wagon that you borrowed for the night to the Nightclub in Port Angeles, Washington state in the 1990s... you need to listen to high energy dance music... don't you? Yes,... of course you do. Yet,... there are very few Dance Singles released on Cassettes (remember Cassettes)... and you have mixtapes from C89.5 out of Seattle. Well.... of course you listen to those as you are driving because... you need to stay Awake!!! The drive is over an hour from your former Guardian's house... but... you don't want to pay for Parking in Seattle again. There is Nobody inside the Nightclub... why... because it's Port Angeles!!! You drive once or twice more to the Nightclub.... and find... that Nobody likes to Dance in Port Angeles... it's Horribly True... but... then you remember that you have recorded C89.5... over two and a half hours worth from before 1994 to listen to. The decades have passed and it's getting more difficult to find Cassette players... you locate your C89.5 Cassettes. It brings back memories of that Nightclub, and how there were no friendly people in Port Angeles, Washington who are also people who like to Dance. I used to be a radio dj during college, so I am naturally gravitated to the left side of the dial. c89.5 is run by high school students, which gains a lot of respect from me. Wow... where do I even begin with my review for my beloved C89.5 F.M.?! I have quite literally grown up with this station - listening to it (especially the trance night show) was one of the few bright spots of my childhood. I don't have as much time to listen now & I now have an Ipod, but I still feel like C89.5 is like an old friend. Pros: No commercials, not even during the day. Happy music during the day and they even play some of the hip-hop and pop hits during the day. But its on the night shows that things get good! There is an electro night, an old school '90's night, an house night, late-night drum & base shows, etc... and there is the Trance night. The trance night is what I've loved since I was a little girl - I'm serious! If it wasn't for C89.5 I wouldn't even know about my two fav. artists, Tiesto and Armin V. B. and my most fav. music genre ever, Trance. I remember all the way back to when a D.J. named Dustin James hosted the Trance night. It was good then, and its good now. So if you want to explore the surface of electronic music's various genres, C89.5 nightly shows are great. If you already know what kind of electronic music you like, then listen to your particular nighttime show. It'll keep you up to date on latest music in your genre of choice. Also, no phony D.J.s who pretend to be your "best radio friend" and then try to get you to go to some club (gee maybe they cut a deal w/ the club) or try to get you to buy something (like the time every radio station had D.J.s who thought Bounty paper towels were the best ever - sneaky advertising much?). Nope, not here on C89.5. Their D.J.'s maybe unpolished, but they don't go on and on - they just play the music and tell you what your hearing. Cons: Like everyone here has said, during the day C89.5 plays the same 20-30 songs over and over and over.... you get the picture. I really wish they could mix things up a little - I mean really who needs to hear an electro mix of Lady GaGa latest song 20 times in one hour. And it might be nice to hear a better-done synopsis of the traffic scene during the Drive at 5 radio show. A few other facts: There is a gospel show on Sunday mornings till 2 p.m. and then there is a goth show on Sunday nights. Kinda random and it doesn't remind me of happy C89.5 to have a goth show, but thats what they have. Also, the yearly pledge drive comes around and its good to give if you can. The year end count-down is awesome too. Also, you can listen online and call in your requests anytime. Simply put, C 89.5 is an awesome station - say what you will about the daytime stuff - but it can't be denied that the nighttime shows open up your world in the musical sense. C89.5 is "Seattle's Hottest Music." It's so hot I listen online from my new home in Portland, Ore. Want to hear pop artists breaking through (as long as we're talking urban/CHR/dance-pop) months or even YEARS before they cross mainstream station playlists? This is the station for you. Oh yeah? No commercials, too. C89.5 is a hybrid of high school student operators and a few dedicated volunteers. Some of my favorite highlights on the station are when Trent Von hosts Tuesday nights from 8 pm to midnight, they play a "90s flashback" replay of a Drive @ 5 from the decade. On Thursdays, Trent is back from 7-9 am with "Save the Wave," which seems to be the only source of 80s alternative music left in Seattle. Oh yeah, they're a public station that gets no funding from the school district beyond having "Mr. D" teach and occasionally run the Drive @ 5 and Noon Workout mixes, so won't you consider giving them a call at fall or spring pledge drive? The station also plays gospel music on Sunday mornings from 6 am to 2 pm, which is a bit odd to me, but I'm sure it also helps pay the bills. The part I do like about this is the station provides the only source (as far as I know) of gospel/African-American influenced music in the city. While Seattle has smaller minority populations, I'm glad a station gives them a voice. read more

This is pretty much the only radio station I listen to nowadays. While some songs get put into *really* heavy rotation (*cough* Filo & Peri - Anthem *cough*), it's usually a good mix of popular dance music. I've discovered so many fantastic tracks (and genres like trance and drum & bass) from this station. The specialty shows are great too...my favorites being Electrobox & Save the Wave. Lately I've noticed another local station has been trying to tap into the dance music market, playing songs that I heard on C89.5 way before (like Enur - Calabria, David Guetta - Love is Gone). LAME! Hmm...that's another thing, C89.5 plays a lot of music before it goes into heavy rotation on other stations. It's kinda on the cutting edge... Anyways, I love this station. I enjoy their diverse music any time of the day. Great music to feel upbeat about, to perk up and just do whatever. I don't like dubstep, but almost everything else I enjoy tuning into. Great staff of students holding it down like a boss for decades and hopefully more to come. read more

While it's better than a lot of the options, I'm just not a fan of the majority of the pop music during the day. I can understand why some people like it and I can even understand why they play it, but it's a lot of bubblegum dance pop to me. Then at night when the format changes to a DJ oriented one the station becomes great. No more playlisted tracks. Just DJs mixing solid music with shows that span various genres. Now that's something I can really get behind, even if the day programing leaves me feeling bored with the station. read more

I have listened to this channel since the early 90s, it been one of my favorites. I do have a couple small complaints. 1) high school kids- monotone, nasally, stuttering, when they comment about not knowing about things from 5 years ago, as if only important things occurred within their lifetime. I understand wanting to help out kids and learn, but keep the pro DJs and let them help out, like any other teenage position. 2) Seem to play Top 40 pop songs during peak hours, if you want any variety you'll need to listen at odd hours, which is really too bad, cause most of its better than the day stuff. I'm not listening as much cause I'm getting tired of the same 10 songs on repeat. 3) Enough with the clinical trials for gay men. Seriously this is annoying and I have to change the channel. read more

My #1 Fav (commercial free) station since 1999. I love the remixes they play and the new music they introduce. . . .They were playing Lady Gaga in 2005 before anyone else. I love them and they love their listeners. The only slight draw back would be it gets a little repetitive but that is probably because I never change the channel. C89.5 is one of the reasons I moved to Seattle. Seriously. I came here for on a business trip in June 2007, stayed for 2 weeks and fell in love with this city. I listened to C89.5 on my way to the office and checked out their website and was very impressed that a city in the US could support such a healthy EDM scene. Granted, I don't always like everything they play on here, but I do notice that they premier tracks that sometimes don't hit other cities for months (LA in particular). It's a community-driven station, and it's helping students discover their passions, and helping me jam out on my morning drive to work. read more

Beware when you give these kids money. #1. Yes, they're kids. #2. Yes, they need your money. I actually visited Nathan Hale High School, and yes, it pretty much looks how it "sounds" on the radio - pretty ghetto. But they mean well, the teachers, from what I hear, are fabulous and providing a curriculum that no other high school in the WORLD probably has. They also have a crappy CD player and mics that don't work. So yes, they need money. I was listening to Paul Allenkompf's (sp?) show "The Edge" (as I ALWAYS do every Sunday), during the pledge drive. I did the whole shebang of 250 so I can get a guest spot with Paul, and they put me on the guest list for a Friday night show at the Crocodile. Great! Friday - we parked 10 blocks away in Belltown, walked allllll the way to the Croc, asked the guy if I was on the list and he said Nope. I even called beforehand to check and no one answered. I got a letter from the pledge admin folks saying the kid who took my pledge forgot to get the expiration date on my credit card so it didn't process. Booo! No show. No guest spot! No five stars for YOU! Moral - if you're giving them money (which they need) make sure they take down EVERYTHING! And with that - one of a kind station with the same 20 songs, they really shine with their prime time shows (i.e. THE EDGE!), and they mean well. read more

I listen to 89.5 religiously. It's the best in the area for my EDM fix which is never ending. I've literally been listening to this station for over a decade and I'll keep supporting them and listening in to some of the newest hits and even throwbacks from the late 80s and 90s and my personal favorite the early 2000 hits. Just take a moment and marvel at this station. It has been around since the 70's and been a sonic landmark in Seattle ever since. The station is publicly funded meaning you don't have to deal with silly commercials or annoying djs. Furthermore it's home to one, if not the only, industrial music shows in the nation. The dj, Paul, has had this show for over 20 years! They have also broke some if the biggest names I'm pop music. Rihanna and Lady Gaga both did shows at the school long before anyone knew who they were. Pretty amazing for a high school radio station. Oh, did I mention that? Yep. A Seattle public high school. This is the only music radio station in Seattle I can even tolerate. For all 6 of my middle/high school years this was the station to listen to at home, in the car and after school. Besides playing fun music, they also kept the inane chatter to a minimum and didn't take themselves too seriously. The one time I called in to find out information about a song and make a request the person on the phone was very nice about my verbal fumbling. It's better that it's a high school station because that means they don't repeat the mistakes of all the shitty corporate stations. read more

Whenever I need to improve my mood I listen to c89.5. It's a nationally recognized dance music radio station located in Seattle. The station plays dance music seldom heard anywhere (other than the clubs). It avoids most top 40 songs and therefore avoids sounding like the average top 40 station. Their website (c895worldwide.com) is not the prettiest site in the world - but it is one of the coolest. The site maintains play lists, streaming audio, and links to buy the music. C89.5 is an academic program at Nathan Hale High School in Seattle. Owned by Seattle Public Schools, it not only makes me happy in my car, it serves as a training ground for broadcast and production careers. Overall the station, on the merits of the music and website alone, would be fantastic. Knowing that the program is part of the curriculum in the Seattle School District, it's stellar. read more

This is an all around good station and is perfect for when I need something a bit more excitable to keep my eyes open. Its a fun station to put on when I want to know what on earth the "young crowd" is listening to so I don't feel old. And truth be told I'm amazed that this is a highschool radio station... I mean wow kids! We never had anything even half this cool in my highschool (which might explain why i didn't stay for very long... huh) anyways... like i said i'm impressed with these kids and thrilled that there is a program like thsi out there for kids who aren't good at basketball or chess or drama and just want to learn something they can take with them later in life. On the down side... it is a highschool radio station, so keep that in mind when you listen to the painfullly cute pubescent teens stumbling their way through the news in their own little monotone way. Gotta give thumbs up to Seattle's only dance music station. Would be nice to see a full-on Electronic music radio station someday, but we know that'll never happen (gotta market whats popular I guess). So this will do just fine. Aside from some of the more cheezy dance tracks, sometimes they slip in some good house or trance type stuff, and their radio shows sometimes sneak in a little underground flavor. But its such a tease.. come on Seattle lets shake it up with some real electronic dance music! read more

Wow, reading Erik T's review brought back a few memories... also being a transplant from SoCal, it was refreshing to hear a non-college station that played the darker side of electronic music. (Funny thing is that they run it out of a high school, but it's rad nonetheless.) Back when I was in this silly band called Hate Dept., Paul was among the first to play our stuff and he was my first real-live on-air interviewer. Been listening since 8th grade or so... 14 years, back in Darude days. It's only gotten better. The Fri Sat late shows are best, Vortex, Afterparty, and more. Listening to C89 is a total energy boost. The music is great and you don't mind at all when the music stops and the public service or news comes on. I love hearing the kids try on their roles as reporters, DJs etc. Wish every high school offered this opportunity to kids. Wouldn't it be cool if we had tons of radio stations like C89, with different highschool's offering different kinds of musical, news and opinion radio stations.
