This restaurant provided us with a quintessential Barcelona dinner -- everything was perfect from start to finish. Make sure you make a reservation online in advance as they get quite packed. Located in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter, Cañete just nails Catalan cuisine with its extensive tapas menu and local wines and cocktails. The menu was divided between appetizers and snacks, with the latter being bigger plates. We ordered a combination of 5 dishes for two people, plus one dessert, and left completely stuffed. You cannot miss the oxtail and monkfish, and definitely have the torreja for dessert. Even though they were busy, the service was top-notch. I almost feel like this was a tourist trap... I tried numerous times to call to make a reservation but they just didn't pick up the phone (likely too busy) at the times when I called. It was a little hard for me to pick the perfect times to call too due to the time difference. The time I did get through, they told me they were fully booked and to just walk in and try our luck. Which is what we did. Our overall meal was about 100 Euros - honestly the most memorable thing about this place was that they served ice with the seltzer water and a squeeze of lemon. They were probably the only place in Europe that gave us ice with any drinks. It's hard to rate Canete, because the food wasn't bad - it just wasn't worth the effort of standing in line before it opened to get a spot. The ingredients were fresh and the service was nice, but it was loud and a bit crowded. Recommend making a resy as this place was pretty packed when we got there. They have a bar and some table seatings in the back. Our waiter was super funny and had a great personality. The food here was exceptional! We started off with the lobster croquettes- had a good amount of lobster filling and cheese. We ordered the squid sandwich (must order!) It looks simple, but it was the best thing we had there. It had the perfect amount of crunch and flavor. We also ordered their paella of the day, which was seafood paella- it was more of broth rice (similar to risotto) than crispy. The aged beef steak with foie and truffle sauce was another one of our favorites. Super flavorful and can taste the yummy truffle flavor. Pro tip: make a reservation Pro tip 2: if you don't make a reservation, 30 minutes before opening there is no line. 15 minutes before opening, there is a huge line. The food here is exceptional. My recommendation is to go with a group and get a ton of different things. I made a reservation 2 months in advance of my trip and I definitely needed it. At 8 pm, this place was stuffed and approximately 8 people were waiting for the bar. Luckily, I was able to bypass them and be seated in the quaint dining area in the back which, to my surprise, included autographs on the wall by American celebs such as Gwyneth Paltrow. Apparently, Gwyneth loves this restaurant a lot! The food here is priced similarly to what you'd expect in the USA, but in Spain and nicer restaurants in Portugal, they replace the tax + tip with a 10% surcharge. The total damage was less than 70 euros. We first ordered the Pa Amb Tomaquet, which is a staple Catalan dish of bread rubbed with olive oil and tomato. The bread was very crusty and crumbled heavily when bitten into. This was a delightful experience and the tomato and olive oil provided the necessary smoothness to the rough texture of the bread. 1 order is 3 euros and comes with a piece per person in your party. The next dish was the Mellow Potato Omelette, essentially a slightly runnier version of the tortilla española. An egg omelette is filled with fragrant caramelized onions and soft potatoes. A bit on the saltier side, but really loved the technique and execution to achieve the "mellow" runnyness. Final dish was baby squid and Sant Pau beans. I felt that overall this dish was just too salty but had so much potential with their sauce. Overall, make a reservation online if you want to try as it's a small space and packed all night. Otherwise, you'll need to try your luck at the bar and you might be waiting awhile. The food was only ok but the servers were all smiles and for the most part, very attentive. Canete is hectic, loud, bright, and always packed. Despite featuring in every food guide to Barcelona ever written, Bar Cañete has deservedly maintained its reputation as a local joint. If you come early, you'll be surrounded by tourists, but wait till the normal Spanish dinner time (after 10 p.m.), most of your fellow diners will be speaking Catalan. The wine list is huge and varied, with plenty of options by the glass and by the bottle. Ask your server to recommend something from the nearby regions of Montsant or Priorat, or some refreshing white to pair with the fresh seafood! If you're going to have only one tapas dinner while in Barcelona, have it at Bar Cañete. Many of the dishes are the same as in other places, but you will struggle to find ingredients this fresh anywhere else. Some of the favorites included razor clams, tuna tartare, the fried cod, the stripe stew was the best I had ever, and grilled Iberian pork loin. However, we were able to set up a reservation for later in the evening. This is definitely the thing to do if you are able, because they fill up really quickly. Our waiter was attentive and a bit of a showman, performing tricks for us and providing great advice. For our food, we started with the lobster croquettes. They were delicious as they always area at restaurants. Next, we got the tuna. It was super fresh and delicious with just a touch of saltiness. A very refreshing seafood dish. Also, we ordered the veal. This was full of flavor and very tender. Then, we got the beef and foie gras. It was absolutely amazing. The foie gras was fatty and creamy which elevated the beef exponentially. The flavoring was perfect. Then, we got the oxtail which was just an explosion of flavor. The crispy top and robust center was just the perfect combination of texture and flavor. These last two were my personal favorites. We ended with the tiramisu which reminded me of the assemblance of a baked alaska. The inside was creamy and decadent; however. The perfect way to end the evening. I told myself I'd just wander in for an early dinner when I had a good idea, no one would be eating since it was around 7p and of course the bar was nearly wide open. Perfect! I started with one ham and one lobster croquette both very tasty and then the absolute highlight their grilled spicy octopus with a side potato mash. OMG!!!! This was soooo tasty! I did not order anything else to eat, yet another glass of wine and a cortado to finish because I knew I was going out on a churro hunt later that evening. I rode the subway here from Sagrada Familia and then did a bit of walking (less than a mile) this route provided a great authentic feel of a different area of the city than I had been in earlier in the day. Probably the best tapas place I ate at in Barcelona! The service was superb and the food was absolutely amazing. Each one was unique in its own way and presented beautifully. We started with a ham croquette and a lobster one. Both were creamy and savory. I liked the lobster one more. The fried artichokes were light and had a crispy outer shell with a soft tender inside. Then came these delightful scallops cooked perfectly with Iberico ham. Tasted like the sea with savory ham juices to complement. Next we had the oxtail stewed with mashed potatoes. It reminded me of shepherd's pie, rich and creamy. The beef tenderloin with foie gras over hashed potatoes was my favorite. The richness of the foie melted into the tender steak pieces and the potatoes added a nice crunchy texture. To end the evening, we tried their version of creme brulee.
